I need more coffee for this one.
Or…meth. Phyllis Diller is in there.
I better just stick with coffee.

Now that’s a Rankin/Bass production I’ve missed! How the heck did THAT happen?!

    As Strongbad would say, “Netflixed!”

That’s just bad form if you watch Mad Monster Party before October 1st.

Yes! October! That means Monster Squad and Goonies and Hocus Pocus! I didn’t even know Halloween claymation existed…wasn’t there some halloween special hosted by Harry Anderson? Anyone remember that?

    In “Animagic and Color”?
Clearly this can’t be as good as something in “VideColor and Supermarionation”
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Rankin and Bass Christmas specials, this just doesn’t look up to that standard. That said, I too am shocked I’ve never heard of this. Shocked I say!

I’m confused, why is it titled “Mad Monster Party?” with a question mark at the end? What’s the question really asking? Is it really a party? or are they really mad?

“The hunchback”? Really? Could we be a little less sensitive?
They basically added “old people” to the list of scary creatures.
    But why stop there?
    “Wheelchair guy.”
    “The Homeless.”
    “Unfortunate birth mark guy.”
If you are going to dick there is no point in going about it half-assed.
    …
I probably shouldn’t mix metaphors this early in the morning.

How in the bejesus did I miss seeing this growing up in the 70s? I just ordered it from Amazon and plan to have my own Mad Monster Party soon.

Am I the only one who finds a stop-motion animated Phyllis Diller scarier than the real lady? Personally, I prefer her when she was animated in the old Scooby Doo episodes. Good times, indeed. 😀

Never heard of this before, so I went looking on IMDB. Look what I found there:

    Someone’s remaking it!

    YAY! Mad Monster Party!
Thanks for the blast from the past – double blast, as it sent me looking for my old IGN review (which, as it turns out, no longer exists, except thanks to the magic of the Wayback Machine – http://tinyurl.com/4wx7ug )
Ahhh. Halloween. (contented sigh, vacant stare)

Back in the mid-70s, there was a local independent TV station that would play movies like this every now and then.
We also had one of those fake Draculas like the guys on SCTV would spoof.
In fact, I just found out that the scary-movie show has its own Wikipedia entry:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmare_Theatre
I saw a lot of movies I shouldn’t have (I was 10 through most of 1975) and some people would say that explains a lot.
After watching this short trailer, it’s difficult to think that anything Tim Burton does is original. 🙂
    Thanks for the flashback, Wil!

Am I officially too old to hang out here?

    *watches, then stares*
Holy crap…*laughing as hysterically and silently as she can at work* I’ll have to ask Mom if she remembers this…she was 19 for most of 1975, and I bet that the Pitt Film Club screened this at some point!
October is win for so many reasons. Halloween, cheezy movies, and this year, my 21st birthday! On a Friday. And I don’t drive. 😀

As long as we’re posting halloween-related stuff, here’s a cool one related to “Day of the Dead” (All Saint’s Day, the day after Halloween, celebrated mostly in Latino countries)
    http://www.vivacalaca.com
(tried putting anchor tags around it but I guess they’re filtered out)
Anyway, the animation and music are both cool.

They NEVER played that on my local network when I was a kid. I would surely have seen it along with “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

October is great… would be greater if Boingo was still playing their Halloween concerts at Irvine Meadows.
/My first concert was their ’86 show. I was 16.

Random thought: If the awesomeness of Jack Black, Chuck Norris, and Wil Wheaton were combined, Congress would make cloning legal, so that every woman could have a copy of the Perfect Man.

    Hey Wil…
Totally off any relevant topic, but I just saw Echo and the Bunnymen at Radio City Music Hall, on October 1st, thanks in part to you. Years ago (five, maybe?) you made a bunch of posts with titles taken from whatever was playing on your iPod at the time. One was called, “The Cutter.” This caused me to remember that song from the soundtrack of my college years. So I tracked down a live version and put it on MY iPod. I’ve since kept my eye open for a concert I could get to, and they finally showed up in NYC (just one of three shows!) So I took a train to NYC from Baltimore.
    GREAT show. Thanks!

In some weird twist of fate, I was watching some movie today where trolls were dancing to the Monster Mash.
Which reminded me of Mad Monster Party? and so I decided to check if it was on DVD after not seeing it for a decade or two.
Then through random events completely separate found a link to the blog, and there was Mad Monster Party? being mentioned!
Boring story – yes – but a coinkidink worth sharing!

After seeing this post and realizing I had never seen this as a kid, I put it on my Netflix queue. My whole family watched it this past weekend. I have to say that after all the hype in the post and the comments, I was really disappointed. This movie was a snooze-fest. My wife actually fell asleep and after almost an hour, my kids (9 and 12) asked politely if we could watch something more interesting.
As a point of reference, I watched all the Rankin/Bass Christmas shows as a kid and continue to watch them now and I LOVE them. Mad Monster Party, on the otherhand, will not become a family tradition like the Christmas ones are.
