50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

a woefully inadequate session report

  • Games

I can’t go into specifics about yesterday’s D&D 4E session at Penny Arcade, and I won’t be able to say anything until after the podcasts are released . . . but I thought I’d collect the few tweets I sent while we were playing as sort of an oblique overview:

Remember when you were a kid, and you hardly slept on Christmas Eve, because you were so excited? That was me last n ight. D&D4E FTW! –7:51am

I am currently watching Mike and Scott design my character portrait. OMG this is awesome. – 9:04am

We’ve been playing for hours, and it doesn’t feel like it at all. This is even more fun than I thought it would be. – 12:14pm

Pizza has arrived. This shit just got REAL. – 1:02pm

Sharing parmesan and red peppers with @pvponline, tweeting about it before he can. – 1:12pm

One day, I will sing again The Ballad of Rudy the Undead Hound … – 4:14pm

Best. Gaming. Session. Ever. – 5:28pm

It turned out that my fears about messing up my character were unfounded. I did everything right, and over the course of our session it became clear that I hadn’t made any stupid mistakes in his creation . . . in fact, he was kind of a bad ass. Also, I’m really proud of myself for doing everything old school, with books and paper and a whole bunch of not using a character generator to do all the heavy lifting. Wheaton’s still got it, ladies. (Um. Not that most ladies I know, including my wife, care about this sort of thing or understand why [THING I CAN’T TALK ABOUT] and [OTHER THING I CAN’T TALK ABOUT] was so cool.)

If you listened to the first Penny Arcade Podcast and, like me, thought something like, “Man, I wish I could be part of that because it sounds like so much fun,” I can happily report that we were correct. It was awesome, and I think the podcasts are going to be tremendously entertaining.

From the first moment I read that you were doing this, I’ve been excited about it. I love they’re podcasts, I love your podcasts, and now we get the best combo meal ever. Yes please! Not to mention you also had your interview with Major Nelson. The charity really seemed to make alot of things happened, which rocks.
Any ideas on when this is going to be published, and where? Was it put on by Wizards of the Coast again and as such they will post it, or is it something that was put on solely by Gabe and Tycho and therefore theirs is the feed to watch? (…grammatically, I’m not sure what I just did there)
    Looking forward to it!

    …Ok, wtf?
Sorry about that apparent double post. Right now, the comments have disappeared again, confusing the crap out of me, but I’m assuming they are still there, so I’ll just say sorry for the duplicity of the whole thing. My bad for trusting the internets!

Well, this lady cares about old school character creation. I don’t mind looking at generators for fun but a character is really mine when I do all the heavy lifting myself. Also, I’m sure I’ll care about awesome thing you can’t talk about and other awesome thing you can’t talk about when you finally talk about them.
It seems like you had an awesome time, what with the 4e and Rock Band and all that. Huzzah for you! I was horribly jealous and happy for you at the same time while reading your tweets.
I look forward to the future podcasts. I think they’re going to be awesome. 🙂
    Cheers!

Used to play Rolemaster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolemaster, we played versions 1 & 2) in college so yeah I get the rolling up a character the old school way. There’s a hell of a lot of dice rolling and looking stuff up in books in RM, way more number & stats foo than D&D especially when your character is going up a level. And my college roommate was a rare breed a *female* DM (and a very good one at that who ran a multi-year campaign that people would have killed to play in).
And BTW I’m female, so I wouldn’t say all ladies don’t exactly care about RPGs.
Glad you had fun though 🙂

All of which leaves us with just one question: when?!?! Any idea when the podcasts will be up? Loved the 1st ones, can’t wait for the next.

I’m on Episode 7 of 8 eps already in the RSS feed. I’ll anxiously await the sessions you are in!! They’re highly entertaining and make me wish i was playing RIGHT NOW!!!
Rolls a 1d20 saving throw vs. jealousy!
    “1” EPIC FAIL: I’m jealous!

Lady here who is running a D&D4E session tonight. Don’t count us out like that! Given that my gaming groups are both more female than male, I think you just aren’t hanging out with the RIGHT females :p

My wife, sister-in-law and I will be getting our 4E on sometime soon.

Between the podcasts and reading Gnome Stew
    (http://www.gnomestew.com/)
    I’m really looking forward to
    it.

Can’t wait to hear the podcasts. Are they available some way that doesn’t require iTunes?
Also, can not believe that I didn’t pick up on your sarcasm in the last post. I guess I’ll have to take my sarcasm-detector to Prof. Frink’s for a look.

Last D&D I played was 2nd Ed. back in the late 80’s. Bought them all, but we never got past Companion level characters. Spending an age rolling u and writing up one’s characters was always just as much fun as playing!

Initially read the title as a report on a woefully inadequate session. Glad that I was just confused.

Sounds like a good time was had. I haven’t played D&D since they came out with the various handbooks (Elf, Fighter, etc.). I really miss the brief time I played back in college… it was a bonding experience in our dorm. Everyone played for a few months. It was a lot of fun. Some fun stories there.
My wife knows Jeff K. from Penny Arcade. They went to high school together.
Yes, Stormpocalypse® is fun… mostly since our power hasn’t been knocked out (yet). The night is still young though.

Do we, your intrepid fans, get to see your character portrait?

New character building is the FUNNEST, especially once you’re a pro… going back to the beginning and designing a character for maximum playability and entertainment value is just awesome.
Apparently we lady gamers aren’t nearly as few and far between as I (or you) thought! Way to come out of the woodwork, there ladies!

TwinsFan91: They should be. The first PA set is available for download on the Wizards of the Coast site, without iTunes.

Hit wizards.com/dnd, then click ‘Dragon’, then hover over ‘Features’ and then click ‘General Features’. The podcasts are in the list and clicking one has a ‘Download It Now’ option.(Just below the second pic.)

I help run role-playing conventions here in Denver, and our out-of-town guests are always amazed at our 3:1 male/female ratio (1:1 among our volunteers). Apparently most places have 8:1 or even 10:1!

I’m thinkin’ you need more female game geek friends — we’ve a whole passel of them up here in Seattle ;>. Heck, I’m the one who taught my husband how to play D&D :>.
