50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

did my time, took my chances, got my geek on

Posted on 27 January, 2009 By Wil

YouTube user ewingsquadron put together a really cool overview of our Rock Band party at Phoenix Comicon:

And here I am doing Eye of the Tiger:

And here’s We Got The Beat, which was crazy fun and much more tiring on drums than I was expecting. It does have a drum solo, though, which is pretty awesome. The lighting isn’t great, but I think you can get a sense of how much fun we were all having, which is all that matters:

If you have a video of your own, feel free to link it in the comments here, and I’ll do a link roundup at the end of the week.

Eye of the Tiger is my 3 1/2 year olds favorite song. He grabs the mike and belts it out at the top of his lungs. I’ll have to show this to him when I get home tonight. Awesome! You’re my hero : )

Okay, you did Phoenix. 2000 miles further east please.
Now Dragon Con is good and all, so is chiller con, hey even ICON or Shore leave (which has the best cons on this side of the US I think)
    Come on Wil. PLEEEAASSEE..

Ok. I have to ask…what was with the smacking the mic on your hip during eye of the tiger? Oh Oh Oh! Were you calling out Britney?

Looks like a blast! Wish I was there. Specially for Wil doing Eye of A Tiger… Woot!

You look like you had so much fun. I wish I had friends to play Rock Band with.

Rock Band at ECCC would be brilliant, don’t you think? Seattle loves its rock.

  7. StasiaWeb says:

Man I was already jonesing for a Con from all your talk about going AND your tweets while you were there. Now it’s a full-on craving!
And I second the comment about coming further east. The west coast gets all the cool people!

This officially cements Wil as “King of All Geeks” folks. I dare anyone to fight me on this. Bruce Campbell can still hold the title of “King of Cool” but I do not see him being this geeky with his fans.
Oh, and are the original vocals always that loud on Rock Band or can you turn them down in the settings? I know it would drive me freakin’ nuts if I was competing with the actual singer.

Rock Band - Phoenix Comicon '09
I soooo have to buy Rock Band after this…

  10. Beth says:
    27 January, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Well, it’s official, I’m buying my brother Rock Band for his birthday so I can steal it and secret it away to my apartment. Such an amazing and geeky thing must be owed by myself or I will have to relinquish my Geek Princess title. And I’ll probably be assassinated by ninjas. Not good.
Eye of the Tiger? Kicked serious ass, Wil! I never knew that song actually continued past the final “Eye…of the tiger”. Now I know.

Man, Rock Band 2 shall be mine as soon as I get my next freelance check. I want to rock out at Nerd Prom!

  12. Tom Boucher says:

I’ve got Rock Band but I want more songs, need to get RB 2 for my Wii.
    looks like a great time.

  13. Voyeurangel says:

There are parts of rock band that you have to tap or hit the mic for the beat.

  14. mandy says:
    27 January, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Agreed, “We got the Beat” is surprisingly tiring.
Out of curiosity, what level are you drumming at? I’m the resident Rock Band drummer at home, and regularly shock and awe my friends with my mad skillz, but I’m still only managing Medium at 100% and have a spotty record at Hard. I’m determined to master Expert this year.

  15. Peasweet says:
    27 January, 2009 at 2:32 pm

You have some fierce competition, Wil…
    http://theschusters.blogspot.com/

  16. Wil says:
    27 January, 2009 at 2:49 pm

I play drums on Hard, except for the Nightmare stuff, which forces me to drop to Medium or put on No Fail.
Expert is probably not going to happen in my lifetime.

  20. Lanky Nibs says:

Every time I see these vids I just want to shout and scream. What we witness here is the true, full potential I always knew RB and Guitar Hero possessed being tapped into. Arrrrrgh! I’ve gotta find a way to convince my console-playing crew of friends to uncage their rock and roll animals, if only for a few fleeting hours. There’s simply too much fun to be had not to try.
Thanks again, Wil, for enlightening the uninitiated about how much frigging fun these games can be.

Wil, long long long time reader and pretty sure first time commentor. My girlfriend and I recently became addicted to Rock Band ourselves so when I saw this I immediately made her watch. After she said she didn’t understand what the big deal was, it’s just some people playing Rock Band. I was confused by her confusion. “Um, well that’s Wil Wheaton singing” I said. “OMG!!!!1111!!!” It never occured to me that she knew you only as an interwebs being whose blog I check so often it drives her nuts and as some books on my shelf. Anyway I just thought the whole thing was funny.

  24. Sara says:
    27 January, 2009 at 6:18 pm

hee. except when you decided to play Expert for “Give it Away”… which we all kicked butt on, and as a result got the highest score of the night. It was such a blast! 😛

  25. Wil says:
    27 January, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Bah. Fucking Give it Away is a one-star difficulty like Go Your Own Way is a one-star difficulty.
Which is to say it is absolutely NOT a one-star difficulty, and is more like a million stars, all stabbing me in the face.

  26. CJ Wellman says:
    27 January, 2009 at 6:48 pm

    Wil —
You’ve got brilliant drumming skills! As Mandy commented earlier, I too am my household’s resident drummer and while the guitaring make you feel real, the drumming does indeed require skills …no offense to any shredders out there, but the drumming is a bit harder to pick up than the RockBand guitaring for the average person. Totally agree about ‘Give it Away’…it seems like that song should be harder to play on the set.
Anyway, I’ll stop geeking out about drumming and just say that it was a brilliant idea to bring the game to a Con and involve the crowd … looks like everyone had a blast!

  27. mandy says:

Long time listener. First time caller. Love you. Love the show. Man I miss cons. This is what I miss most about cons. Not the seeing of guest…no offense Wil you are the most awesome of awesome guests and someday I will manage to make it to a con that you are attending…but the getting together of likeminded individuals in a weekend of pure unadulterated fun. The meeting of new people. Friends for a weekend…or a lifetime. Oh and if I could throw out a request for an appearance at Megacon in Orlando Florida. Also as a lifelong Journey fan I love your cover of Anyway you want it!!!

    Wil,
Nice work tackling the drums on hard. I play hard/expert myself, but I have a few years of real percussion under my belt (not so much kit xp so I’m still learning some of the trickier bass kick parts).
Anyhow, good stuff. I sincerely hope to make one of your “tour” stops in the future. GenCon Indy ’09???

  40. Wil says:

Have to bring your tour to Sacramento. I can handle hard drums or guitar… If you can wangle it, you gotta check out the ION drums. I was able to get a set for free and it’s a blast.
Rock Band Forever! (GHWT is teh suck… though they got The Boss, so I gotta play a bit… painful though with those crappy charts)

Excuse me, Mr. Wheaton, but you were not the only star of the show. This is my wife rocking ‘You Oughta Know’ (She’s gonna kill me when she finds out I posted this.)

  46. Wil says:
    28 January, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Your wife RULES. Before she started singing, I said, “You *have* to say ‘fuck her’ at the appropriate time.”
She wasn’t sure that was a good idea, and I told her that I’d take the blame if someone freaked out, so when she totally committed to it and belted that line out, I was so happy I almost peed a little.
Tell Karen that I said keep dancing, okay?
