My first day at Chicago Comicon was damn fun, Dianne. Damn fun. My Q&A went well, I got to meet tons of enthusiastic and awesome people, and I was given the gifts of many, many craft beers.

The world needs more Sparks McGee, so we can have more Sparks McGee t-shirts.
This made me tear up a little bit. She got excited and made a painting with some of my fundamental rules for life on it.
This is as painfully accurate as it is adorable.
This is one of my very favourite things, ever. This young woman’s boyfriend took the words I spoke to Baby Violet, and put them all down on a poster. Then, he put “it’s not about what you love, it’s about how you love it” over them all. It’s really beautiful and was quite moving to me, and I loved it so much I’m hoping to work with the creator to offer something like this with dftba.
Oh, and the comicon is sharing space with a Beatles con, and a rare coin con. A few hotels away, there’s a horror con. It’s like a heist movie just waiting to happen.

I’m glad you’re getting lots of beers as gifts–that was my plan until I couldn’t swing the funds for the con. Hopefully someone sneaks you some Wisconsin beer in there (if you get a chance to try something from New Glarus–do it!)

I want to thank you for the awesome answer about girls being geeks you gave my daughter, Eve, at the panel.
She just turned 11 and apparently that’s the age some kids like to draw a line in the sand and say what is cool and what is not. It’s affected her so much that she almost didn’t ask you the question. Thankfully, the wonderful woman next to us joined me in encouraging her.
With two geeky parents, it was inevitable that she’d find geeky things she likes, but she’s starting to struggle with it at school. She doesn’t want to wear her cool Spock sweatshirt or her Slytherin tshirt to school because of what other kids have said. This makes me very sad.
I have said many of the things you did to her in your answer, but I think it definitely has more weight coming from you. I’m just her mom, after all. 😉
P.S. I got a little teary when you spoke to her. Damn you for almost making me cry at a con!

Hi Wil–I read your blog through a LiveJournal feed (yep, some of us still ply those waters 🙂 ), so I’m not usually over here on your site to comment. But lately, I’ve been seeing the things you’ve been doing–your words to Baby Violet, for example–and just really being impressed with how much care and how much awareness you’re going about in the world. I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for using your powers for good. It would be so easy *not* to do that, and there are plenty of high profile people who don’t. We made a last minute decision to go on Sunday, spent all our time getting stamps for the boys passports (way too much effort for lame prizes, but they were happy with their “noise putty”), but I did hover near your booth a couple of times and bask in the nearness. (I am not an autograph or photo collecting person.) I watched you working so hard to be really present for the people who were talking to you; yeah, I could see the effort, but that made it sweeter, really. 🙂 My husband waved to you and you waved back at one point. Thanks! Made his day. (And now he is on a plane to China, away from us for 12 whole days, including our baby’s first day of school ever. Stupid business trip with bad timing!) Sorry, I’m rambling; kind of down sick today and feeling chatty.
The biggest highlight of our day was Victor Dandridge’s U-Cre-8 character crafter panel; we LOVED it and I bet you would, too. My husband came up with his character before we were done and then had Scott (Scoot) McMahon draw it for him. So much awesome synergy and our boys had fun and I feel reassured that I will get them to follow in our geekly footsteps, whew!
Okay, done rambling. Mostly wanted to tell you about the character crafter thing. 🙂
