I spent much of today going through last night’s post comments, and making sure that people I’d inadvertently blocked on Twitter were unblocked.
But, uh, the thing is … after going through about 250 links, I’d only actually blocked three of them. Everyone else was “just in case” or something like that. I thought, gee, maybe I didn’t make the instructions for finding out if you’d been blocked clear enough.
But the other thing is, I ain’t even mad. Because I did that today, I saw a couple hundred real people’s faces, and got a tiny little glimpse into what all of those people have been doing with their lives. It made me feel connected in an unexpected way (it put the “social” in “social media”), and though it was time consuming, it turned out to be a nice way to take a break from doing actual work.
And it gave me an idea: Why don’t you introduce yourself to me and other WWdN readers?
Leave a comment in this post that tells us a little bit about yourself, if you feel comfortable sharing that sort of thing. Don’t post personal stuff that could be too revealing or hurt your privacy, but maybe share your first name, if you’re married, have kids, what sort of work you do, and maybe something that you like.
The idea is that, when you see the actual, real, human person behind a screen name or twitter handle or whatever, it’s a tangible reminder that we are all people on the other end of the connection. We’re people with families and jobs and hobbies and passions and hopes and fears and we all live on the same piece of rock, hurtling through space.
Of course, you don’t have to do this, and I can’t stress enough how important it is that you protect your personal information, but since I enjoyed the social experience of feeling connected to actual humans, maybe you will, too.
Or maybe you won’t. I’m not the boss of you.
Wil, I think you should be very proud!
At the time I am posting this you have 612 comments from people who are willing to share relatively deep and real things about themselves. Many even say they have not shared on the web before.
I believe you have a power (mainly by leading with example) to bring out honesty in people. To get them to show their true faces. And to trust you not to use that against them.
I am very honored to know that there is a chance you will read this; you clearly have read many other posts in detail. And maybe you have not stopped due to the sheer number – yet. ๐
Please give yourself a very big pat on the back for me – you deserve it.
Thanks Wil, keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Dale
Hi, Wil,.
My name is Marilyn B, 66 years young. 2014 has been a tremendous year: In 11 days, I did 3 of the top 4 things that cause stress: I retired, moved 3 states over, and married my high school sweetheart. Death of a loved one stressor not included, thank God. There was no stress as it was all meant to be and prayed for. Mark (hubby) and I met, in San Francisco, when we were 13, started dating at 14, got engaged at 16, had a daughter at 17 (who we had to give up for adoption), kept dating until, through people and cirmcumstances we couldn’t control (we were minors), we were separated. We never broke up or said goodbye, so Mark tells people we were engaged for 50 years! We are happier than we have ever been but there is one thing missing: our daughter. We would love to see if she would like to know who we are, no pressure. She is free to choose. For a while now, I have been thinking about starting a blog to try to find her but didn’t know how. Thanks to you, Anne, and your blogs (which I just found today), I have a direction. Thank you.
Coincidently, we were watching a ST:NG episode, last night, that featured you. I told Mark, “that young man is now 42 years old!”
I wish you and yours (animals included-we have 2 dogs and are owned by a cat) a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2014.
Sincerely,
Marilyn B
My name is Rob Chambers and I’m a stay-at-home dad of 10 year-old twin girls and cartoonist. I’m the creator of a D&D themed family-friendly webcomic called MeatShield, at meatshield.net (I hope it’s cool that I put the address in there – if not, I do apologize). I’m a big fan of your writing, Wil, and we share a birthday, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
My name is Misti, I live in rural Eastern WA. I love all things sci-fi and fantasy. I am 42, married, have one man-child left at home, two older children from my husband’s previous marriage and 6 grandchildren. I love playing video games and just recently got into WoW, which I love.
I think it’s great that you adopted your dogs and that you have pibbles in particular. One of my favorite things I do is volunteer at the dog shelter where I live. I have done every Sunday morning for nearly 4 years and I love it. Thanks for being so awesome and bringing us together under your banner.
Hi Wil! I’m Tracy. 41, married, no kids, 2 cats, 1 dog, 1 horse (for now – gotta get the hubby one, too). I’ve always been into fantasy & scifi, reading, playing (pc) games and collecting comics since I was a kid (and still do!). I’m an author (tech books), programmer, developer. Thanks to people like you, Felicia Day, Espionage Cosmetics, Jennie Breeden etc – I’m slowly coming out of my shell and beginning to proudly wearing my geek. It started with the nails and is branching out to the clothing, though it is difficult to find women’s tshirts that are scifi/fantasy world oriented.. everything is for men.
I love this thread so much. I’m trying to read every post. The surge of beautiful humanity is overwhelming.
Amber here! I am married to my high school sweetheart with two girls. He is in the military so we bounce around. I grew up in a star trek house. I watched the original series with my dad and snuck out of bed to watch the others. This spread to a healthy love of all things sci fi and fantasy. I watch several shows, watch the movies, follow all the nerds on social media, read all the books and occasionally sling beer at the local Renaissance fair. Basically, if it has vampires, zombies, aliens, time travel, werewolves, space battles, witches, explosions or monsters, I love it.
Hoping to raise our children to be even geekier than us. We are not nearly as tech savvy as some so we don’t write code, hack, build computers or play RPGs. Our kids can expand on our shortcomings.
We do love a good board game and a fair number of drinking games too. I think that classifies us as midling nerds.
Leanna from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mother to two girls, working in admin with the Manitoba Government. I’ve been reading your blog on and off for 8 years. I also follow Shane Nickerson’s blog which came from a link from your website. I loved watching TNG when it was on the air and it remains my favorite Star Trek series. I hope there will be another Star Trek series in the future.
Hi Wil!
My name is Ray. I’m 43, married with one daughter, and I am a composer and music teacher in a small urban school district. It’s tough. There are some bright moments but there’s a lot of struggle just trying to get to the teaching. On the other hand, I’ve had the principal tubist for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra choose a tuba solo (with piano accompaniment) of mine to be on his most recent solo album. I can claim to be available on iTunes, which don’t suck. I also like participating in medieval recreation in scribal arts, music, and putting on armor and hitting peope with sticks.
I have been a long time fan since your ST:TNG days. I watched Lazarus, to see you in it. On purpose. And I’m still a fan. I really admire what you’re doing in front of the camera and beyond it. You are a good guy with a great family who’s doing a lot for others by simply being awesome. Thank you, may you continue to have fun doing what you do, and like so many others here feel, it would be an honor and a pleasure to meet you one day and chat.
Ray Strobel
Cool, a composer! Are you on twitter at all?
My name is Jim. I’m nowhere near as glib as the other commentary, but i have to say that I’m glad you connect as well as you do to your crowd. I’m later to the WWdN party, as I rediscovered you while watching The Guild! Been following your blog ever since and it’s a pleasure to find an update in my RSS feed. Also, ginormous TableTop fan. My family regularly plays board games together directly as a result of that show.
I’m married, have 3 kids, I live in Michigan, and I make knives for a living. No, really! Full time! Mostly bushcraft and kitchen/home cutlery. I also aspire to cultivate my (currently awful, but ever improving) filmmaking and writing skills.
Thanks again for your blog, good sir.
Did you say knives? How about shooting me a link? misangela at telepath.com
Sure! Check your inbox soon. ๐
Hi! My name is Lorien, I’m @silentsquee on the tweets. We met at Phoenix Comic-Con in 2009 and you told me I really had my geek together. You and John Scalzi were so very fantastic to me that weekend. You inspired me to write and make things that other people love. Someday I want to be totally awesome to every fan I meet and inspire them too. Shortly before the con I purchased Just a Geek and have been reading WWDN since then. Your honesty about your depression has helped me through my own. Thank you!
I live in Milwaukee with my wife, transplanted from Nj for some time. I just worked 12 hrs. I started following along more so the wwdn blog in exile and wilw’s work on Leverage and the Guild. I think I became a twitter follower after TableTop.
I’ve watched Star Trek of course, and Stand By Me but I think I connect more with bearded Will.
I have a dog who I am current using as a pillow. He asks me to tell you “I’m a dog!” And he also appreciates when people aren’t dicks.
It took a while for my wife not to think of Will as evil…namely due to Big Bang but she is coming around. She wants him to come over and play Race for the Galaxy.
Damn you autocorrect and your extra L’s.
Hi Wil, Melissa here. I’m 46 years old, married and living in the Chicagoland area. Much to my dismay, my 8-year-old little boy has never taken to Star Wars at all – in fact, he goes out of his way to avoid it. A little while ago, I played “The Trouble with Tribbles” for him while we were traveling in NYC. At the end, he turned to me and said, “You know, I really like Star Trek a lot better than Star Wars.” I have recently started watching Tabletop in an effort to learn more about games that my husband, son and I could play as a family. I am a former intellectual property lawyer who enjoys knitting and making binary code (among other themes) silver jewelry. My mid-life crisis seems to be manifesting itself in an uncontrollable urge to collect vintage Japanese toys – ones my son and I can (carefully) play with together.
I love this idea. Scrolling through the other comments made me realize how many actual wonderful people are a part of this community.
A little bit about me…My name is Brittany. I’m in my mid-20s and I live in St. Paul, MN. I’m currently single with no kids (furry or otherwise) but am looking forward to buying a house and putting down some permanent roots in the next few years. I work as a nutrition educator for low-income families in the Twin Cities. Essnetially this means I spend the majority of my day talking about food, cooking in other peoples’ kitchens and trying to provide help, resources and knowledge to mitigate the food crises many families find themselves confronted with. When I’m not working I’m probably in my kitchen tweaking a new recipes, blogging with a glass of the good stuff in hand (current favorite Hendricks with lime), gathering with friends and family for a good meal or curling up with a great book (often nerdy/food related).
I’ve been a long-time fan of most things nerdy (Doctor Who, Star Trek, Sci-fi books, Comics, etc). I grew up playing a ridiculous number of board games and card games (the product of two highly competitive parents with PhDs who believed this to be a superior form of entertainment that taught logic and reasoning). Looking back I am incredibly grateful for the gift of ‘gaming’ that they gave to myself and my siblings. And I can’t imagine a childhood devoid of those epic family game nights.
In college I was the one introducing my friends to my parents expansive game collection and ended up turning many of them into game addicts as well. These days I love throwing themed game nights with great food, good booze, a game or two and some of my favorite people. It’s become a great way to see people outside of their normal context (i.e. work, school, church, etc.) and cross-over friends groups. I have discovered a few great games from Tabletop and love that the show is working to make board games cool again! (Sidenote- I’m psyched for the RPG show too!)
Yep, that’s my name. 33 near Portland, OR. Wife, 12 year old daughter, and 2 year old son. I teach a high school class for students in trouble of dropping out or who need alternate schedules due to life. I was forced to open a gift today but it turned out to be Dixit. The family gathered as we rarely did before Tabletop started. Turned on to D&D, Kingmaker, and Wabbit Wampage by a friend’s dad when I was 12. I quickly discovered Dragonlance novels and have tried to game as much as stupid reality allows (which is rarely for now). I also read a lot, play with the kids more, and am working on my Masters. I’m grateful to read that so many of you have a similar story or interests to my own.
Zia, married, 53, with an elderly dachshund. Love board games, a copy of CAH is on it’s way as a Yulemas present from my wife! Follow online comis The Devil’s Panties and read you on Livejournal.
Heya, I’m happily anonymous in the intercyberwebnetspace. I’m a writer. I dig the blog, and your books, most. Words, words, words–but Tabletop is awesome, too. I’ve never played a single tabletop game (I live alone with a cat . . . she isn’t very keen on games that don’t involve food, or killing living things), so it’s nice to live vicariously through you and your friends. Cheers. Keep writing–some of us like the words.
Hi, i’m the Owlbear. Well, i’m a Owlbear. Well, i’m someone who dressed as an Owlbear for Tabletop Day and it just kinda stuck ๐
I’m 35, live in Melbourne, Australia. Have a wonderful girl, Jess as my partner in crime for 10 years now. Got a little place out in the suburbs which we open up for big tabletop games days as often as we can because there’s not really any stores near us. Every room in the house gets tabled & it’s just awesome. Actually have one this Saturday!
I work for a small business that helps kids with prepping for their final tests to get into University. Work with great people & been there for 9 years.
I love games in all forms, I’m a big movie buff & I love a good bourbon.
Oh, and I thoroughly enjoy making silly Owlbear pics with MS Paint which I put on Twitter.
I’m John, 49, married but widower since Thanksgiving day. Two teenagers, a girl aND a boy. I am a software engineer for a contractor at the Johnson Space Center. I like reading, good beer, and playing games and table top gaming with my kids. Thanks TableTop! They are always interested in the new games I bring home. Playing games together had always been important, but I think it will be more so now as we adjust to life without mom and wife.
Very sorry to hear of your loss, John! I’m glad you and your kids have something you can all do together. Wishing you well…
Thank you for your kind words. Happy New Year to you!
My condolences for your loss.
Thank you so much.
Oh, hell, John, I’m so sorry. I hope you have good people around you to help you through.
You summed it up quite well. I have wonderful family and great friends that are overwhelming me with love. Thank you
Hi, I’m Trish. 43 years old from Ottawa, Canada. Single, no kids ๐ I’ve worked in film and television (mostly news) for 20 years now and somehow still enjoy it. I grew up reading just about anything I could get my hands on, and only discovered science fiction and fantasy in high school after a friend and I agreed to read each others favorite genre for a month. I never looked back.
I love to travel the world, taking pictures to share with friends, family and strangers…I just started a mostly photographic travel blog. When not working, you can find me outside, singing in my choir, painting, working out, or watching tv.
Just needed to shout out to someone from my home town! Merry Christmas!
I’m Cat, I live with 2 cats and a really cool husband. Been a gamer for many decades, can’t see that changing any time soon though looking forward to my soon retirement as work does tend to get in the way of a good boss hunt. I’m in Atlantic Canada, a beautiful wonder of a place. I’ve lived away from it but always come back to my ocean and even enjoying the sometimes harsh winters we get. I stumbled across this site much to my extreme delight, from the Bloggess. So, hello from me and mine. It will be holidays at the Zombie Free Zone where our cottage is and wishing everyone health and happiness in the new year.
waves hi, i’m Sandra in NC.Tripped over your blog about twelve years ago completely by accident when poking around with the ‘wwdn’ letters for something completely unrelated. I have a couple of degrees in criminology and information systems and am, unfortunately, not doing a thing with either of them. Im not a crazy cat lady (yet), but I do get to bug my parents furbabies on occasion and I have an awesome music and rugby loving parakeet, who at this moment is singing along to Queen.
Hi, I’m Dani. I have always had a love for books and games (both board and video). It was only recently (in the last 2 years or so) that I really started looking at and following the people behind the stories and the ones in the shows that I have always loved. It really is nice to see that there’s a real person behind the action, and in return that person appreciates those who are looking up to them.
Gaz. Husband of 22 years and father of three boys. Live in Chester, UK. Run a youth club. Spent a fortune this year since discovering Tabletop ๐
Love the show and your positive attitude to life.
Sharing my love for tabletop games with as many people as possible.
As the good man himself would say, “Play more games.”
Hi everyone. I’ve been a Wil follower for so long, I honestly can’t remember the date. When he first started up this blog. I’ve bought all his books and I DON’T hate Wesley. Well, maybe just a tish. ๐ We’ve met Wil a coupla times at DragonCon here in Atlanta. We’ve foisted our comics on him, too. ๐
I live in Atlanta GA. I have a Mac geek, graphics and web design background. I’ve been assisting a local restauranteur run his various restaurants for the last 10 years. My husband, Nick, has a similar background, but he’s also a webcomic artist as well (thinkweasel.com).
We have a cat (the last of a herd of 4) and we are planning our exit from the graphics field because it is dying a slow death. Nick’s job WILL go away in the very near future. Just a matter of when. ๐
Nick discovered that he is very good at fixing vintage arcade games and I’m very good at restaurant running, so we’ve decided that a vintage arcade pub will be our parachute from graphics. It will be called Player One Arcade Pub. You can find us on twitter and FB if you are so inclined.
Nice to meet all of you! Thanks for the interaction, Wil!
Angela
I’m Emily. I’m 16 and I play ice hockey. I know all the words to Lord of the Rings. I also have a dog named Bowie, named after David Bowie. I spend my time with my friends where we are creating Planet of the Apes: The Musical.
I’m Hank. I’m 28. Married, with Thing Three on the way. I work in sales at a fair trade coffee company. I’m a theology student, looking to become a pastor someday.
I came across WWdN through Humble Bundle, when “Just a Geek” was part of a ebook bundle. I found it really inspiring because I’ve wanted to write a blog, but always felt nervous about it. Although I haven’t started a blog yet (because of time constraints), I’m resolved to do so when school ends.
In truth, I’m not a huge fan of board games, which is weird because I feel like they fit my personality so well. I think the story component of video games has always been addicting to me; rarely is it the gameplay or design that draws me in, it’s the story. Anyhow, I started watching TableTop a while ago because I loved the humor in it and now I’m seeing just how cool board games are, both as a diversion and for getting hang out with people. I just might be coming around.
In 1989, I ran track. I ran hurdles and did long jump and triple jump.
I was also obsessed with Looney Tunes.
And so my now brother-in-law labeled me “wabbit.”
And there you go. That’s who I am.
And now it’s 10 AM and I just got off work because I’m an emergency vet, and I’m really tired but I have to get up early this afternoon to do family holiday stuff because I work the swing shift tomorrow, so that’s all I’ve got for now. Good night!
Hi Wil, Molly here. I’m from Ireland and currently living in Belfast. I thought I’d remind you that you do have fans over here too! (hopefully I’ll get to a convention to meet you some day!) I’m 31 and I remember watching you on Star Trek with my mam when I was a kid. It started my lifelong love of sci-fi. Both myself and my BF love Tabletop and our board game collection is expanding rapidly because of it. I cannot get enough of Munchkin at the moment – I’ve brought it home to play with my family over the Christmas even! I’ve a feeling that Ticket to Ride will be under the tree for me too.
This was such a good idea for a post btw, I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s posts. You have such a great style of writing and I love your blog. Keep up the good work! ๐
Molly
Hello everyone my name is Dave and I am 27 years old with a lovely girlfriend and one super chill 11 month old. I am a manager at a small restaurant and my favorite thing is comic books which I enjoy anytime the boy is asleep in my lap.
I’m an expat American living in Dublin, Ireland, having married a lovely Irish lass. Even though we got a late start, we have two lovely daughters who are growing up geek like their dad. We’re all musicians (singers, winds, piano, ukulele, concertina, etc. classical/Irish traditional/jazz), dog lovers, and game players. Thanks for all the gaming info and encouragement. ๐
Hi Wil! I’ve loved reading the comments that’ve been posted in response to your request, and I hope you have the time to read mine.
I’m Karen and I’m a nerd. I’ve been married for 2 years to my amazing, handsome, nerdy husband. We’re the proud Aunt & Uncle to three nieces and one nephew.
Because of our influence, the kiddos all love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and a host of other nerdy things. We make sure that “Qapla’ ” is among the first words that they each learn. ๐
I’m a fraud specialist, so I help people who’ve become id theft victims, and I help stop jerks who’re trying to steal credit card info. I have a B.A. in English and grew up with aspirations of becoming a novelist. I enjoy drawing, fishkeeping, reading, jewelry making, playing video games, and photography.
My mother grew up loving “Star Trek,” which earned her much undeserved ridicule from her family. She and my un-biological grandmother (long story…) introduced me to “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” which is still my favorite show.
I also love “Star Trek: Voyager,” and I may’ve kinda sorta danced around the living room to that theme song every single week. Maybe. I was in jr. high and way too “grown up” to have actually done that. ๐
My favorite band has always been and will always be Smashing Pumpkins. As a teenager and young adult, my obsession with SP was all-consuming. No other music has resonated with me quite the same way.
When I run into people from high school, that’s what they remember me for. If I had a dime for every time I’ve heard “I think of you every time I hear a Smashing Pumpkins song,” then I’d have a whole lotta dimes!
Since 2009, my husband and I have attended Phoenix Comicon. Our annual tradition is a bonding experience for us, and we’ve introduced many family members and friends to the con experience. We show ’em the ropes and they become regular attendees.
Jeff and I first met you in 2010. You autographed “Memories of the Future” for me, and I said that I love your writing style. I’ll always remember that you complimented our shirts: Jeff had the Konami Code on his, and I had “OMG PWNIES” with video-game controller themed ponies. You said, “You two win the award for best nerd shirts!” ๐
We hope you return to Phoenix Comicon in 2015 because it totally felt like something was missing in 2014. We enjoy how genuine and nice you are with your fans, and you’re hilarious in panels. You’re a gifted storyteller and we enjoy the “Awesome Hour” shows you put on.
Mostly, we love the influence you’ve had in what we call the Nerd Renaissance. You’ve taught us that being a nerd is awesome and something to be proud of, which is a message my mother’s family really needed.
I keep up with very few blogs; I always read this one. Thank you for sharing your writing, your acting, and your awesomeness with us fans.
Maureen here. I’ve been working mostly in IT for many years; currently am database administrator at a public high school district. Live in the SF Bay Area and will be getting married next year to my love. Long-time SciFi fan. I embroider and draw (the latter poorly) and also scrapbook. I’ve tried writing many times but never satisfy myself or anyone else with my results. I do blog. I love playing games and it is very rare that I find anyone to play with me. That may or may not have to do with the fact that I get very competitive when I play games. Never got into video games because I knew I would get too addicted, but love playing them. Love this blog, and am getting to know you Wil and all the many things you do and the things that interest you.
Hi. My name is Crystle. I have 3 great kids and own a tabletop game store. ๐
Hi all, My name is Scott, I live in Scotland with my wife Sarah. We’re both Sci-fi fans, gamers and love Star Trek. We met at university and have been together for nearly 14 years. We both work for the health service as radiographers. Happy christmas to you all.
Long time fan of WW on the internets… More so than television, lol…Love watching Star Trek with my young daughter and making mead at home… Sort of re-found Wil’s blog on a homebrew thread and have been enjoying your musings ever since!
Oooh I’ll jump on this train! Hi, I’m Megan, 26, an Arizona native now drowning in the Georgia humidity (the air… it’s WET… what is up with that??). Listening to the Just A Geek audiobook was kind of a catalyst for me ditching my lousy state school and transferring across the country to pursue my dream – animation. 3 years, one short film, and a diploma later, and I just got a job offer today! (for a graphic design gig, but I’ll take it!). I’ve got a great boyfriend and I’m a total geek for superhero stuff.
Hi everyone, I’m Jo from Manchester, England. I’m the financial controller for a small charity that supports people in Manchester who care for loved ones who have disabilities, long term illnesses or substance misuse issues. Just want to say Hi and thanks for speaking up regarding depression and anxiety. My cat Bronka would say hi too but she’s asleep on my lap snoring her head off, it’s like stuck in a room with a small, cute Darth Vader.
HI! I’m Angel, married for the second time(this time I got it right!), have 2 grown kids , and 2 grandkids with another due next June. I’m 42 and have gone back to school to become an accountant. I follow your entire family on Twitter and I think you guys are hilarious. I love your wife! Ann has inspired me to start vandaleyes-ing things. Including my husband while he was asleep. I’m hoping to finally get to Gencon this year so I can meet you!
Katherine here, my family met you at the first Geek and Sundry SDCC TableTop party. Thank you for that. Thank you also for sharing your issues with anxiety and depression. It helps me deal with my own. I’m a native Californian who married a Marine, so we move around a lot. We’re currently in a rural town on the East Coast in a thunderstorm. It’s a wet, floody kind of Christmas.
Fun fact: You are exactly 10 years older than my husband, who is a lifelong gamer. He loves that he shares a birthday with you. My middle school daughter (who’s birthday is two days later) is jealous.
Another fun fact: We have pretty much doubled our game collection because of TableTop. You helped my husband bring me from Monopoly, Clue and Scattergories to to DiXit, Small World and Legendary.
I’m Bryan. I’m a librarian. My partner and I don’t have kids but we have a turtle and a cat.
Grew up loving TNG and was neutral to all Wesley controveries (probably because I didn’t have the internet). On a whim, I read your book, Just a Geek, and loved it. It was inspiring. You should be very proud of it. Thank you for writing it.
I’ve been an analog gamer since adolescence. I backed TableTop Season 3 and host a game night at our house.
I’ve often turned to my partner and said, “Why f__k is Wil Wheaton such a big part of my life?” Get out of my head Wil Wheaton!
Happy Holidays!
Hi, I’m Mike, I’m a blogger and video maker, I struggled for years about being a geek until reading Wil’s blogs made me realise that it was ok to be a geek(see my struggle – if you want – at http://hope.ly/1vckIZC)
I have a lovely fiancee and a wonderful son, a growing collection of tabletop games, and a new computer on the way in January which I’m very excited about! Happy holidays everyone.
Howdy! Jen here. I’m an author, journalist, editor, and fellow nerd in Portland, Oregon.
(As a gaming lurkerโI know, there’s no excuseโI’ve only recently started watching Tabletop. I’m hooked!)
My name is Scott. I’m a professional software development geek. I’m married with two grown daughters, one still in college. I play ice hockey and am a fan of the game at most every level.
Hi, I’m Jim. I’m an elementary school librarian. My wife teaches (at a different school) and my daughter is now in 6th grade. She watches Tabletop with me and was so happy to watch Felicia screw you on that “Resistance” episode. Which scares me a little. She just found out Felica will be at Dragon Con this fall and is so excited.
She also regularly beats me in all kinds of games. Just yesterday someone gave us Small World and she spanked me the first time out.
Thanks for Star Trek, for Tabletop, for your writing, for the viral video about bullying I shared with my students and school counselors and for generally being awesome. I feel like we went through similar things with losing our way in our careers, then finding it later on especially with our amazing partners and children.
And, as always, I try not to be a dick!
Hope you, your family, your friends and everyone on the blog here has a great (and dick free) holiday season.
I want to jump in too!!!
I’m Kevin. 40 and living just North of Edmonton Alberta Canada. Married and got 2 kids. Met you at Calgary, in our photo op you handed my son a cut out of the Season 1 tabletop trophy. You absolutely made our expo when after the photo, you took out a pen and wrote his name on the “tape” and presented it to him.
I’m a foreman for a highway maintenance company. Grew up near Viking and have met most of the Sutters. I played a lot of hockey, also a goalie.
My name’s Jamie (I feel the need to specify that I’m male, since the name throws people). I live in Mobile, Alabama, and I have an unknown muscular disease similar to muscular dystrophy. I occasionally write PC game reviews for Gamerrazzi.com. John Kovalic’s Dork Tower helped me discover that I’m a geek. YOU showed me that that’s a cool thing to be.
I’m a married mom with two boys on the spectrum. I’m a wired reading nerd who also is a conservative christian.
My reaction when wil say something liberal? Sigh, put the phone down for a while and cook for humans or something. By the time I come back to twitter its all puppies and burritowatch or something.

I’m a single guy in my early 30s, play tabletop games with my friends (since NES was a thing, but more now after Tabletop the amazing show), and work in IT.
I have struggled with depression and my own neuroses for >15 years, but I’m starting to even feel the warmth of the sunlight at the end of the tunnel — and I give some credit for that to you (Wil) for being so open about your own troubles. Seeing someone share that with thousands of people, (apparently) fearlessly, helps push me on toward the happiness I know is there for me.
Thank you,
Mari–Josh
