I spent much of today going through last night’s post comments, and making sure that people I’d inadvertently blocked on Twitter were unblocked.
But, uh, the thing is … after going through about 250 links, I’d only actually blocked three of them. Everyone else was “just in case” or something like that. I thought, gee, maybe I didn’t make the instructions for finding out if you’d been blocked clear enough.
But the other thing is, I ain’t even mad. Because I did that today, I saw a couple hundred real people’s faces, and got a tiny little glimpse into what all of those people have been doing with their lives. It made me feel connected in an unexpected way (it put the “social” in “social media”), and though it was time consuming, it turned out to be a nice way to take a break from doing actual work.
And it gave me an idea: Why don’t you introduce yourself to me and other WWdN readers?
Leave a comment in this post that tells us a little bit about yourself, if you feel comfortable sharing that sort of thing. Don’t post personal stuff that could be too revealing or hurt your privacy, but maybe share your first name, if you’re married, have kids, what sort of work you do, and maybe something that you like.
The idea is that, when you see the actual, real, human person behind a screen name or twitter handle or whatever, it’s a tangible reminder that we are all people on the other end of the connection. We’re people with families and jobs and hobbies and passions and hopes and fears and we all live on the same piece of rock, hurtling through space.
Of course, you don’t have to do this, and I can’t stress enough how important it is that you protect your personal information, but since I enjoyed the social experience of feeling connected to actual humans, maybe you will, too.
Or maybe you won’t. I’m not the boss of you.
Hi Wil (and friends!)
I tend to post under my last name – Logan – when on the web, as I just don’t like my first name. I’m 41, married, child-free and have lived in New Zealand for a little over 8 years (my husband and I moved here from Maryland.) When I can remember, I blog about what it is like to live in Wellington. Oh! And I am a corporate Tax Manager, albeit one who believes in taxes.
I fall more into the Star Trek nerdiness than the Star Wars group, with my husband the exact opposite. And we both love love playing Cards Against Humanity with our friends. ๐
Hi Wil.
And happy holidays to whoever else may see or read this post. I’m nearly 30, and live on one of the greatest islands in the world. Vancouver Island, Canada.
Nothing spectacular to mention. I have a psychology degree, which comes in very handy for my cake decorating day job (NOT). I love reading, The Walking Dead, and all other manner of geekdom.
Thanks so much for giving us all a chance to introduce ourselves. Continue being you. Because your great.
I wish you and your family (dogs included) a very happy New Year and 2015.
Carly
you’re*
*In before the grammar cats!
Hi guys my bame is Jaime a bunch of my friends call me Fez. I am a writer and long time trek fan, so much so that for the last 6 years I have worked on Star Trek New Voyages/Phase II
Hey Wil –
I’m Brad. 34 male. Never saw Star Trek until I was 30 (binged TOS, TNG, DS9, Viyager, & all the movies, sorry, couldn’t handle Enterprise). I knew you from The Guild first. Either way, I love your sense of humor & passion for nerd stuff. I will literally listen to any podcast or watch any show with you in it. True talent. Keep up the great work and hope you got some torso shorts for the holidays.
Hi Wil and Wil’s readers,
I’m John, and I make my living writing and editing tabletop games. it’s a good life, it’s incredibly satisfying, and I don’t have to wear a tie. I consider this a huge win.
I’m an avid film and history lover and spend a ton of time on Twitter hopeful yet shocked that people maybe are reading what I say.
May your evenings be good ones.
Hi my name is Leslie Stockton. I’m a Poet and Writer, my career used to be IT Sales and Marketing (Oracle/SAP). I’m pretty much a geek who lifts weights, bikes, swims does anything physical. I just woke up three years ago and began writing. I am learning how to be happy. ๐ that’s it .. oh i am chock full of other skills abilities etc.. but i will not go all Sheldon on u guys lol (was i funny) lol lol Mr. Wheaton what is this anyway??? lol
Hey Wil and company.
I’m John, about your age, and a lifelong Trekkie. I’m in Montreal where I work as an IT Guy. I’m married I’m a dad to a six year old.
I’m currently addicted to Tumblr (you can find me at shatnerianpause) and carbohydrates.
Looking forward to hearing more of your stuff. Cheers and happy new year everyone.
Hello!
I’m Judy and I live in New Hampshire – I (re)discovered Wil and this blog by happening upon a Youtube video of Acquisitions Inc. (Aeofel lives!) and then somehow this led to me rediscovering the passionate nerd buried inside the boring grownup drone working at an insurance company. (Thank all the gods you can think of, because I think my brain was shrinking by the day). Now I’m a happily obsessive fan of too many things to count, gamer, reader of books, listener of pocasts, attendee of conventions, and hopefully someday writer of things other people would like to read.
Hello universe involving Wil Wheaton!
My name’s Ray. I’m British, an ex-serviceman (RAF) & current wanna-be writer.
I like your writing, I like your acting, I like your presenting.
I’m not so big on certain aspects of your sense of humour, but no-one’s perfect.
I like to read, write and enjoy SF, horror, fantasy & weirdness.
Feel free to check me out on Smashwords.

I once named a bar after you in a story.
Hi I’m Shell. My favorite things to do are writing and photography. My current two photo projects are based on board games(not in a small part thanks to Tabletop!). My daytime work is just work and it’s my creative side that is far more me. I love travel and trying new bizarre things. Next year I hope to participate in a pie fight. Or throw my own if I can’t find one.
I hope everyone is having a fantastic holiday season and your new year is full of love and laughter.
Hello Wil, my name is Daniel (Danny to my friends.)currently, I’m a security guard at a call center. I am a nine year veteran of the U.S. Army and O.I.F.01 war veteran with two combat tours in Baghdad. I have 2 beautiful and amazing daughters and 2 awesome bonus sons. I am currently in the process of making them all geeks by letting them all play in a Dungeons and Dragons game I’m running. We are all fans of Tabletop and re-watch every episode when we can.
I’ve been a fan of yours for many years ever since we were kids. When Gordie found that leech I was sincerely sympathetic but could not stop laughing. And when you were on the bridge of the Enterprise you were not the annoying child actor to me but a bridge for a young boy like my self to imagine themselves as one of the crew.
When I was introduced to D&D I was about 12 and it was the legendary Redbox. I spent hours running that beginning scenario over and over trying to save that cleric without overtly cheating then realizing I could just go ahead and do that since no one will ever know.
I began following your writing when I found your articles on the back of Dragon magazine and was pleasantly surprised to find out you also played D&D and are a big nerd. And though we may differ on many political beliefs, we agree on alot more and I will never begrudge your opinions because you are not only an American but a damn fine human being. so we may not see eye to eye on everything, you keep saying them and be open to positive and constructive discourse.
Signing off, a big fan, Danny.
Hello, my name is Luke. I’m a married father of two girls, one into all things geek and one very girly girl. I have been into gaming of all varieties since grade school. I currently DM a 4thE D&D group with friends, family, and one daughter. We play all sorts of games with family and friends. We own 5 dogs and my wife is the director of a dog and cat rescue she started back in August, called PAST Rescue. If you are in the STL area and are looking for a furry friend please look us up.
Hey, Wil! I’m Bob. I’m an information security officer for a top 50 state government, a recreational homebrewer, amatuer guitarist, Sci-Fi geek, theoretical woodworker (which mainly consists of watching woodworking TV shows and saying “gee, I could do that”), husband of Mary, father of Zack and Jake, and proud friend of three mini dachshunds. Thanks for giving us this opportunity to connect!
Hi Will. Burbank bound boy hopin to find some #gamemeetups in our little LA neighborhood. Perhaps you can stop by for some Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill!
Hi,
I’m Susanne. Took a few days to post because I’ve been busy with Christmas cooking and gaming. I’m one of the people who failed to properly follow the instructions about how to check to see if you’d been blocked first on twitter. Sorry. We were dreadfully sick from Thanksgiving to Dec 22 and I was still in a nyquil fog. I was calling it “the cough that stole Christmas” but we managed to shake it off just in time. I’m a trekkie, pc gamer, general nerd, homeschooling mother of five, and retired dog-rescuer.
While we have several intersecting areas of interests, I follow your blog primarily because you and Stephen Fry (his letter of note about how it will be sunny eventually is my favorite) write things that help dispel my depression. I have a couple that I re-read when the ick is clouding my vision. I’m also always hopeful that you’ll talk about a game that will turn out to be a good gift for my kids. They age from 16 to 27 and are the kind of kids who gifted home-made Jayne Cobb hats as Christmas gifts. We played Dominion, several Fluxx versions, Mansions of Madness, Firefly, and Catan for the holidays, ate lots of food that we shouldn’t have eaten, and had a lovely holiday. I picked up Eldritch Horror as a gift for my oldest son.
Good luck with the Christmas dishes! I have to go do mine.
Susanne
Hiya and how-do. Hope everyone here is enjoying their holidays. I’m being a bit of a slacker and offering the unabridged edition of my Twitter profile. I’m a wife to a paladin, 16 years and counting. I’m a mom of two – an apprentice sorceress and a valkyrie-in-training. Professionally, I’m a gold-earning healer and renewer of sales deals run amuck in the financial services industry. In my spare time, I’m a tabletop gamer and while I have my passions, my general geekery knowledge level is rated at “just enough to be dangerous.”
Hi, my name is [REDACTED] and i live in [REDACTED]. i have been a [REDACTED] for [REDACTED] years.
Juuuuuust kidding!!
Hi everyone! My name is Theresa. i am a wife and mother of three. i have been a middle school math teacher for 23 years. i am a HUGE Star Wars fan and display my complete Star Wars Potato Head collection in my classroom. I have been published in the Star Wars magazine (ahem, twice) for charity auction art pieces i have done over the years. Boy, if that ain’t a humble brag…
My husband and i bonded over ST:TNG in college, and years later in reruns, i could usually describe which episode was showing upon viewing the first two to three minutes of an episode. Not so much now, though. Ummm, what else… OH! if I could do everything tl;dr, i would. Yeah, yeah, i know.
Hmm, i secretly like to write short short short stories. Like, one paragraph long short stories. My high school English teacher had us do that as a warm-up and i really enjoyed it.
Anyways, looking back, i can see i rambled. Anyhoo, glad to be here, party on Garth, and MATH IS NOT HARD!!
(Gawd, i hope the editing commands work. It’s gonna totally suck if i have to go back and edit this post…)

I am Jay. Which is actually the first letter of my birth name with AY added onto it.
My father wanted a 4th, possibly 5th now though I’ll keep the 4th. Our family tree showed another down the line. My mother wanted to break the line.
So, I go by Jay in a signature section of my license. And my real name registered on the license.
Everyone in the panel I call home at an Atlanta convention once a year knows me by Jay or my fanfiction/gaming handle which is a shortened form of a name I created back in 1993 to use on Prodigy’s discussion forums.
I’m a fanfic writer with a bunch of plot ideas for novels clamoring for attention in my head so I may have one out at some point.
addon to my post: ROTC knew me by my real name and took roll with that name, all others knew me by Jay
After graduation I discovered that while I had shown up at graduation, my “identical twin” did not. Both names were listed at the same address I lived at. I was an only child. grin Ah teenage rebellion. I thought my actual name was better.
Hi Wil! I’m Kim, a middle aged geek living on the Sunshine Coast of BC, Canada with my wife of 10 years (yea Canada and marriage equality!) and our furkids. I’ve been a mental health clinician working with kids and their families for around 30 years, and I want to tell you how much I appreciate your voice when you speak about anxiety and depression, and how they are evil, sucking demons that try and take the life from us. I know when we struggle we feel incredibly alone. So please let me say that you are heard, and your words help so many more folks than you will ever realize.
And thanks for the experimental podcast – I’ve missed RFD! Happy holidays to you and yours – and to all reading your post!
Kim (who finally has all our dishes put away)
My name is Cady. I live in a small town in a apartment with my twin brother and want desperately to get out. I work fast food but I have a degree in media. I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place though, as my grandfather is more or less all alone in this small town and I’m his only visitor. So, I could move on with my life or be in his as often as possible and make his less lonely. And that is what I boil my current life down to, even though I am very aware that I am more than my situations.
I’m trying very hard to remind myself everyday that even though I’ve has some tough times and often think I’m alone, I am in fact surrounded by people who love me and care about me. Which is what I’d rather boil my life experiences to.
Hi Wil, I just read your tweet about introducing myself. Sorry, I’m late. Holidays and all. I’m Pam, proud mother of 2 grown gaming techno cos playing “con” attending geeks. I help guide middle school kids to what I hope is a better understanding of why they need an education, but they rarely believe me sigh I’ve never understood this aggravation with Wesley Crusher. What’s wrong with people? I think he’s damned cool, but then smart always is. He struck me as sincere and good hearted. Good job on you!
Someone introduced me to your blog years ago and I’ve enjoyed your humor ever since. We love board games, too. Just bought my nephew Tokaido for Christmas on your recommendation. I laugh at your tweets, especially when your dogs want whatever you’re eating. Keep up the good work and I’ll try to do the same here in my little corner of the world. Thanks for offering a virtual handshake – it was nice “meeting” you.
Follow up comment. (see pg 7) Ordered Cards Against Humanity in time for taking to Christmas. Hubby insisted on getting a game going (our first) with my sister and niece. Dad had to occasionally crank up the TV in the next room so he could hear it over our laughter.
The next day hubby set up the card table in the living room so he & I could play. I explained that wouldn’t work as he would know it was mine and I would know it was his. His reply “can’t we at least see who can come up the the best match for each card??” How could I decline his sad plea?
Hi, Wil,
My name is Chris – @mudn8r on the twitters – and I’ve been a fan since the TNG days, I even liked the sweaters! After TNG I rediscovered you after an appearance on the Screen Savers. I’ve been at Microsoft for a couple of years after a 9 year tour with Apple. I was a professional saxophonist prior my tech career. I loved your post about meeting Henry Rollins. I think I would have totally lost it! Anyway, I continue to enjoy your work and the humanity you bring to a sometimes inhumane internet.
Thanks and Happy Holidays!
My name is Sabrina, I’m an interior designer and Los Angeles native. I’m married to a music teacher with a four year old son. I was raised by geeks and therefore grew up watching you on TNG, and playing D&D with my brothers and father (the icing on the geeky cake is that my character was named Princess Leia). I watch Tabletop, read your blog, and your posts. Tabletop has opened a whole new world for my husband and I, who use Tabletop to help us decide what games to try (my husband is a geek, not raised by geeks).
My lifelong dream is to design theme park rides, because I love that rides are pure childhood joy and an escape from the daily grind. I love to bake, cross stitch, and go on random adventures…
So many people commented on this! My name is Jason and I’m an aspiring game designer who moved to Seattle in June because it’s a good place to network and also I got really tired of Michigan. I have an MA in history and wrote my thesis about comic book fanzines. I’ve been watching TableTop since the start of Geek and Sundry, which happened right as I was really starting to lose traction in grad school, and which got me back into gaming in a big way. Big enough that when I chose to leave academia I decided to try and make a living in game design, and perhaps maybe other creative things too if they come up. Watching Wil and Felicia make things they love for a living encouraged me to do the same (with some moral support from Hannah Hart, whether she knows it or not)! I’ve done some freelance RPG design and I’ve been working on a card game about kaiju for about two years now (with long stretches of not working because thesis, or moving).
My screen name on here is the same I use on twitter, wordpress.com, and the Paizo.com boards. So if you see an owenstreetpress somewhere it’s probably me, or some kind of weird clone/duplicate/mirror universe me.
I’m Christen, I love designing and making quilts for fun, I even made a “Wesley Crusher” quilt that you signed at the Rose City Comicon this year (2014), and I have 2 geology degrees. This all makes me painfully awkward when meeting new people, especially when I think they are cool, I was very embarrassed when I spilled your coffee all over the place when revealing my quilt.
My Mom and I used to watch Star Trek TNG every night while she made dinner and I did homework or helped her with dinner. Now my daughter laughs at the bright lights and “silly monsters” while I cook dinner watching reruns. She’s not quite old enough to help with dinner, but she’ll get there.
Of course there is more to me than the few I shared here, but I can’t share everything online. ๐
My name is Sarah and I’m a college student working for Disney world this upcoming semester! After years of travel and deliberation I’m finally settled as a history and film major (concurring degrees awwws yeah). I’m working on my thesis currently and avoid it by writing a business plan for a tabletop cafe in Arizona for the community to come game at and drink/eat at. I’m not too interesting but I get by!
My name is Spencer and I am a personal trainer living in Arkansas. I enjoyed watching you in TNG and have enjoyed you even more on Tabletop. I am 24 years old, married, and loving life at this stage.
Side note, I just received my t-shirt from supporting season 3 and I have not taken it off yet ๐
My name is Dianne, I’m 50 and I don’t do anything right now, but I used to sell apparel and work with lawyers and process hotel payroll, and about two dozen other ‘careers’ also reprographics. I love listening to music, I have over 10K tracks in my iTunes, and I’m not done yet.
I live in Seattle, have since 1985, I moved from California.
I’m zoltarpanaflex on twitter but I rarely twitter because I don’t twitter much.
I remember seeing a sign way back in 1993 that said “Things will be different when we’re all online” and truer words were never thought.
Cheers!
Trying to say a “little” about myself is tough when I’m six months away from turning 50. I’m originally from Kentucky, have lived all over the country. I have finally settled in Crestline up in the San Bernardino Mountains. The little woman and I have two rescue mutts (one part pit bull), both of which your lovely wife was kind enough to feature on her “Rescue Pets are Awesome” Tumblr blog. We also now have a rescue cat. I used to be in radio but figured out that life wasn’t for me. The Great Recession tossed me around a bit but I have survived.
I think I discovered your original blog very early in its existence. It was a post that somebody linked to somewhere and, even though a big TNG fan, I didn’t even realize at first I was reading stuff from the person who played “The Crusher Boy” until I found an entry where you brought it up. I now also follow your Tumblr via RSS, your Twitter, and keep up as I can on all your videos.
I could say a lot more but I don’t want to go on and on. I’ll just close by saying thanks for being an open and honest person about both your struggles and your triumphs, thanks for introducing me to “Ticket to Ride,” thanks for being such a great advocate for animal adoption especially for pit bulls, and GO KINGS GO.
My name is Nicole and I am a nurse, wife, and mom. Also a gamer girl, nerdy book reader and total Wonder Woman addict.
hi, wil! i’m a 60-year-old single mother of two daughters, 3 rescue dogs, and 1 rescue kitty. i’m a regular follower of both you and anne on twitter, tumblr and here. you inspire and entertain me, in more or less equal measure, on a daily basis. both my older daughter and myself have struggled with depression off and on and i can’t tell you how important your forthright sharing of your own struggles has been – to me, to her, and to so many others. our little family (daughters, their significant others, and i) just spent our usual christmas holiday cooking and eating together, watching die hard & a christmas story (our favorite holiday movies), admiring area light displays and playing dixit and cards against humanity into the night. thank you for sharing your talent, and yourself, with us!
I’m Janet, I live south of Melboune in Australia. I have 2 chihuahuas, I love Lego, Firefly/Serenity, and chocolate! I have a couple of chronic pain/fatigue diseases, but I manage them with meds & clinical Pilates, and I work part-time which I’m very proud of. I’ve recently started getting into tabletop gaming (thanks Wil!) with my husband & friends/family. I miss watching The Guild. Oh, and I’m lucky enough to live near the beach, and I get to go outside at night & breathe in the salty sea air.
Hey Wil,
I’m Kyle. Frustrated writer. Former film biz worker. But most importantly, I’m a husband, father, poet, and prophet.
Lifelong fan of ST, SW, and a Whovian (since ’81). Toss in Blakes 7 and Red Dwarf as well. I grew up in the country with an aerial and three channels. TV Guide was my library.
Eventually, I’m going to write my way into cozy corner and let the multi-cented royalties roll in, but for now i serve the Great White North in greens and a blue t shirt.
All the best of the season to you and yours, from Us and ours.
Hey Wil, @miquelatalia on twitter here. Been a fan of yours for only a few years, so relatively new (The Guild was my intro). I am almost 30 and a mom to a rambunctious 3 year old and trying for a 2nd. When I have work, its in theatrical costume. I’d love to work on a movie or show, but I live in the wrong part of the world for that. (North-Central Florida) I have loved following you and your wife both on twitter and seeing the interaction between you and how goofy and fun you can still be after being married for so long. I’m not married but I met my daughter’s father online about 10 years ago. Maybe longer, but it gives me hope after seeing so many failed relationships.
My name’s Peter (@PeterOrlowicz on Twitter, because I’m transparent that way). I’m an attorney with the federal government, so a lot of my personal details are a matter of public record anyway. ๐ I’m married but no kids (yet), and my wife and I both really enjoy watching Tabletop together. Tabletop has helped convince my wife to try some new games, which I’m grateful for. I also have around 25 TorsoShorts(TM) in my closet that I’ve been accumulating since before sweater vests were a popular thing again and you had to go to the bargain bin at the outlet mall to even find them. They go great with a shirt and tie to vary the look a bit.
Hello! I am Danielle. I am an aspiring actress by way of four years in the Army, four years of a young-and-stupid-but-no-one-got-hurt marriage, and a degree in classical voice performance. Despite being in a bit of a holding pattern for the past few years since I graduated, I am finally starting to get some traction with handling Adulthood, and I’m hoping to continue the forward momentum into something resembling a career.
Wil, I met you a few years ago at Dragon*Con with plans to make a dice bag from fabric signed by you and Felicia. That’s still a work in progress (college happened pretty hard there for a bit), but the craft-ening will definitely happen. I have been thrilled to find you online, as your voice calling for understanding and empathy has been integral in my own journey for both self-acceptance and getting over my old, judgy thought patterns. Thank you for being awesome.
Hi, HIroja @MusingsOfAShibe love the experiment with the show left a comment on the show post. Keep more of them coming. Keep up the good work.
Hello, my name is Jenn and I’m a 911 operator here in beautiful British Columbia. I am a super nerd who is only now making enough money to finally be able to attend comic con in Calgary, and I’m so fucking excited!!!
Hi, I’m Tom and I’m a Wil Wheaton fan. My social media use is mostly Twitter and I joined that because of an article I read about Wil and what he was up to. That was about 4 years ago and my following list has grown starting with Wil and the people he follows or follow him. It’s a great group. I’m married with a grown son. I write computer software for a living. I’m looking forward to a chance to say hi to Wil on the JoCo Cruise this February.
I’m Kay. I’m a lawyer for a non-profit in Michigan. I work to keep low income people in their homes. I also do some civil rights work, fighting discrimination.
I’ve really been a particular fan of yours since I listened to the audio book for Ready Player One, though I’ve loved Star Trek for many years. I appreciate your interest in civil rights and net neutrality. I’ve also been struck by your openness about mental illness. I have PTSD and an anxiety disorder. It’s taken years to not let those things define me. Accounts like your help normalize the experience. My pet project is fighting discrimination against people with mental illnesses, particularly within the court system. I figure the more people from all walks of life are willing to talk about their experiences, the more we can come to recognize that people with mental illnesses are not “the other” but are fellow community members deserving of equal rights.
Hi Wil.My name is Melody and I live in the San Francisco East Bay area. I’ve been a Trekkie since 1969. I own a geek group on meetup.com. This is our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TriValleyGeeks/ It’s open to everyone who considers themselves a geek, so feel free to join. I’m married and have two daughters who are 23 and 25 years old. I’m a massage therapist and I own my own business. Some of my interests are hiking, watching movies, studying the MBTI, herbalism and collecting crystals from little shops and festivals (which I in turn give away to people that I meet).
Hi, waves
My name is Hannah and I make/repair jewelry for a living. It’s an awesome, amazing and rewarding job. I’m into a lot of crafty things (I do bead work and crochet to name a couple). I also love video games, table top games, Star Wars, LOTR, the Dresden Files books, Harry Potter, the Nightside series (and lots of other books). I’m somewhat active on Reddit, mainly on the RAOA sub. I also love driving motorcycles.
Hello! My name is Karla. I’m originally from Mid Michigan, but currently live outside of Denver (after a 3 year stay in CA). I work for a company that makes cheese and am currently part of a team implementing new computer systems at our plants (I train & support the quality folks). I started to really enjoy/embrace my true nerd self after college when a co-worker introduced me to Red Dwarf and have since enjoyed BSG, DW, Sherlock (which I just introduced to my mom), and countless others. My friends introduced my to Ticket to Ride & Catan a few years back. I just wish I were home more often to find some new friends in CO to play with!
Hi there, Internets and Wil! I’m Wendy. I am a wife, to my favorite nerdy/geeky man ever, and mother to an adorable nut bar of a 5 YO boy. When I’m not actively wife-ing and mothering, I’m working (because really, who doesnt these days) analyzing business systems (Yes, it is super complicated. Thanks for asking! shines fingernails on shirt) for an online retailer (which I find funny because unlike most of my generation [I am 8 years Wil’s junior] I do almost no online shopping…at all.).
When I’m not doing those things (wife-ing, mothering, working, and shopping in physical stores, that is) I enjoy participating in general nerdery and geekery of various types. I play games (table and video), and like reading (comedy/satire, low fantasy, and science fiction, with some non-fiction [Wikipedia counts, right?] worked in here and there). I also apparently really like using parentheses and brackets when writing. Who knew (points Quiet, every English teacher I’ve ever had!)?
Over the last few years, mostly since marrying and mothering, I’ve discovered that I love to cook. Had only I but known in my single years that I could be using beer for so much more than getting pissed, and turning into piss, but I digress…cooking is fun and can be sciencey too (thank you Alton Brown, Bill Nye, and ATK, and PBS in general).
As one might have guessed, I love science, too. PBS and National Geographic were fixtures in my childhood home and I enjoy them both to this day. Though, to be entirely fair, nowadays I am mostly just disappointed with the not flying cars and not hovering boards and not planet-ing Pluto (Which I know Dr. Degrasse-Tyson didn’t say on purpose to make us sad [Don’t shoot the messenger, I get it], but still…exo-planets kind of make up for some of it I suppose.), all of which hits me right in the childhood.
That said, up with mini-sk…err, NASA. NASA is awesome and we should give them lots of money (I propose we lobby Congress [I won’t even start on the issues with those a$$-hats] and the IRS to allow citizens to flag where their tax dollars get spent after “necessary bills [eg- non-discretionary spending. Paying Soldiers, Infrastructure {roads, water/gas mains, etc. OMG LEVEL 3 BRACKETS }]” are paid). I vote that all my tax money that doesn’t get spent doing those necessary things goes to NASA and/or the NSF to fund research (and I’m sure that many of my fellow US Taxpayers will agree). I’m looking very much forward to what NASA have planned over the next few years/decades/rest of my life, and hope that I, or at least my son, live(s) to see humanity achieve the things my generation was taught to believe it/we would have done by the time we grew up. Less Pentagon, More Rockets!
Huzzah!
mumbles something indiscernible and shuffles away into the night
Well I should introduce myself. My name is Bradford Benn. I own property in Indiana, USA but am most often found in the local Hampton Inn as I travel a bit for work. I make the world safe for professional audio in my day job, many have seen my work including your family when you go to the Staples Center or other Southern California attractions.
I started reading the WWdN blogs a few years ago. I often find myself listening to Wil’s reading of audio books on planes.
Some would say that I am a professional nerd. I have learned to embrace it.
Hi Wil – and everyone else who might read this.
On the internet I’m known as “ChocoBetty” – my online nickname that I have since 1998. It’s a combination of my addiction to chocolate as well as an abbreviation of my real life first name: Bettina.
Maybe you have noticed by now that English isn’t my first language. I was born in Germany and still live there.
I consider myself a huge Star Trek fan even though I don’t own a uniform or dress up for conventions. I also like a lot of other fandoms. I tweet mostly in English – because I believe I can reach more people that way. On other social media it depends which language I pick. Having friends all over the world just makes me switch to English several times a day.
I still claim that I learnt most of my English after I left school – due to the then new medium of DVDs. Nowadays I prefer to watch stuff in English. every now and then I catch an episode on telly in the dubbed German version – and it has become really strange to me to hear the dubbing voices. Still I enjoy a lot of German stuff – music for example. There are some great artist and I think it’s great that there are still singer and songwriter who value the German language. (Several artists record in English for several reasons.) But then I also sometimes listen to music where the lyrics are sung in a language I don’t speak. Then it’s the music that attracts me.
Thanks, Wil, for giving me the opportunity to say “Hello!” – and sorry for probably writing more than I should have.
I can so relate to the watching stuff in English. The same here. Started reading and watching stuff in English when I was around 15 and now I barely even watch actualy German TV ๐
Hi my name is Amanda @MandaMia on twitter. Have been a fan for a while. Recently ordered CAH and admit i plan to spend some time playing tabletop games this holidays. Crazy cat lady (not really…..ok yes thats fitting) i like to cook, read and love D grade disaster movies.
My name is Piper. I’m a writer. Actually, my first book came out yesterday! It’s been a whirlwind from the moment I signed the contract with the publisher and I’m kind of reeling right now from getting my first positive reviews!
Hi Wil!
My name is Josh. I’m a geek. Comics, writing, reading, gaming, photography, sci-fi, craft beer…so much. I have you to thank for my craft beer obsession. Following you on twitter got me intrigued, never like beer before (all I had was the big brands), tried some of what you tweeted about and a whole new world opened up.
I’ve pretty much always been a nerd/geek. Though it wasn’t until I was into my adult life and living away from home that I fully embraced and dove into it. Being nerdy wasn’t cool when I was a kid, and showing a nerdy side added to my school problems then.
I love learning and do what I can to continue my education outside of university, mostly through wonderful YouTube channels like SciShow, CrashCourse. Brain Scoop, and the like.
I’m not a person who has known you since TNG. Watched very little TV like that then. I became a fan of you through your blog, Tumblr, Big Bang Theory and, of course, TableTop.
Speaking of which, just played my first ever CAH game tonight, and tossed in the TableTop card pack into the mix. Had a blast.
