50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

I’ve found Serenity, and you can’t take the sky from me

Something very awesome happened today. I can’t say anything more about it (for now) but I can finally talk about this other awesome thing that I’m super excited to be part of!

In the upcoming Firefly Online game, I get to be the voice of the male avatar!!

This just in from Firefly Online HR: Wil Wheaton has joined the FFO voiceover team and will be playing the part of you โ€“ that is, he will be giving voice to the male player character. We couldnโ€™t be more excited that Wil is taking on this huge part. (Thereโ€™s lots of Chinese cursing too!)

I am so excited to be part of this, and not just because it means I get to finally be part of the best universe in the ‘verse.

…well, maybe it is.

A little.

…okay, it totally is.

I’m recording my dialog in a couple of weeks, and when the game is released in Spring, I’ll be there with you as we pilot our own ships, interact with our favorite brown coats, evade the alliance, and, of course, aim to misbehave.

I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, I can’t wait to be a leaf on the wind.

…shoot. now i’m sad.

This is pretty much the only reason I would play a male toon. Grats, very excited to see how it turns out!

You had me seriously confused there. In South Africa the Kings and Sharks are two local rugby teams. And the Kings are the winnows.

I didn’t even know there was going to be a Firefly Online game.. that’s so awesome! ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad you get to be a part of it. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m so excited about this. I’m a BDH, already wasting tons of time trying to complete series one of the card collection before they switch to series 2, learning the Verse, before the game goes live. I will play a male character just to have Wil’s voice (and I am a female who tends to play female characters when possible).

  14. John Tennyson says:
    23 February, 2015 at 1:29 pm

I’m pretty sure your tweet just caused enough traffic to crash the game’s webserver :-p

  15. Gayathri K (@gayathrikamath) says:
    23 February, 2015 at 1:31 pm

Does the wording mean there’s a female character / avatar I can play? I’M SO EXCITED its YOU for the male character!

  16. Viktor Engholm says:
    23 February, 2015 at 1:32 pm

    Wow, that’s some shiny news!

  17. D. R. says:
    23 February, 2015 at 1:41 pm

Wil, I hate you for this. I always play female avatars, and you’re forcing me… nay, commanding me… to play a male. The things I do for combining two awesome fandoms.
(In other news: Congratulations! More Wil is always good. Now, about getting you as a homie in Saints Row 5…)

  18. Alan Oursland says:

  21. Kim says:

Yay! I’m already playing in the Cortex, and it’s absolutely whetting my appetite for the full game. This is just (more) icing on the cake! I’ll have to play as a male, sometimes, just for the fun of hearing you swear in Chinese. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. David P says:
    23 February, 2015 at 2:37 pm

Sorry, but the best ‘verse in the ‘verse no longer exists, ever since George Lucas shit all over my childhood.

That said, congrats on a well-deserved, fantastic opportunity. Hopefully, you’ll get a pretty floral bonnet out of it.

Not a big gamer… but to hear your voice talking for me? I just might have to start

  24. Jessica O. says:

The site seems to be down…I’m blaming the excitement over this announcement. ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously though, that’s SO freakin’ cool. Well done–I’m looking forward to the game even that much more now!

  25. J. Riley Castine says:

So, someone finally figured out that your voice is simple “Awesome sauce in a Win-Sauce bottle”, eh?

    SHINY!

    Congrats!

  31. Davin Weinzimmer says:
    23 February, 2015 at 3:52 pm

    That’s awesome!

Any chance they are springing for a Mandarin coach for the Chinese cursing bits? The original cast’s attempts were, and I say this out of a place of deep and abiding love, hilariously off the mark.

It’s not that hard to pronounce Mandarin adequately for an English speaker, but it is a completely different beast. The pitch you pronounce something at plus the syllables you are saying combined create the meaning. The classic example is the sound “ma.” In a high, even pitch that means “mother.” In a high-low-high dipping pitch, it means “horse.” Rather an important distinction in almost every circumstance. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Julian Andres Klode says:
      24 February, 2015 at 5:43 am

That’s not really important. It’s 500 years in the future. Just pretend that the pronunciation will be different in the future (it surely is going to change anyway).

      1. Davin Weinzimmer says:
        24 February, 2015 at 9:36 am

Why not make the effort? For set lines, learning to pronounce them reasonably well takes maybe 10 minutes tops, unless the learner is “tone-deaf.” It’s just a matter of being prepped properly to be a parrot, since the language’s sound structure is so different than English. Once you know what to listen for it’s not hard.

Tones have been an integral part of Chinese for at least 1500 years. I would agree that pronouncing things perfectly like a modern native speaker wouldn’t make sense for lore reasons, but being so far off the mark as to be unrecognizable doesn’t make much sense either.

To give you an idea of how badly mangled the Mandarin in the original series was, I asked several native Chinese speaking friends about their take on it. It took them seeing 2-3 episodes before they even realized that the lines were supposed to be Chinese. They thought they were speaking some made up language for the show. ๐Ÿ™‚

So your going to pilot a starship? Way to step out of your comfort zone Wil. ๐Ÿ˜‰ seriously though this has made a must have game into a “need more than air” game. I cannot wait. And I hope you get to call Jayne Cobb a dick.

That’s great! I don’t play many online games, but I think I’ll have to give this one a try, and most likely, I’ll be hooked.

Because why would I want to leave Serenity? ๐Ÿ™‚

    Wil,

Can I call you Wil? I hope we are friends enough over this series of tubes that you will calmly and seriously consider the import of the next words I say to you.

DO NOT BE A LEAF ON THE WIND!!!!

BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO LEAVES ON THE WIND. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE YOU WITH A GIANT TELEPHONE POLE SHOVED THROUGH YOUR THORAX!!

There are already two holographic memorials to our best friends on the cliff side. And we tear up every time we think about it. Freakin alliance bastards took out Shepard, and then the freakin Reavers…

    I can’t even..

    Seriously, Wil.

    Fly.

    Flit.

Roar through the sky. Claw and bite and flame through the sky, and damn the eyes of anyone or anything that aims to interfere with you and your relationship with the sky.

BUT DON’T YOU TRY TO SOAR!!!

    We can’t take it…

  49. Anna yeah (@Thiefree) says:

No way, Wil, that’s awesome! I don’t tend to play online RPGs (is that what it is?), but I’m damned tempted to make an exception. You never truly stop being a browncoat, huh.

    This is fantastic news!
Will there be follow ups involved if they do an expansion, or something along those lines?
