50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

apparently, retrowave is a thing, and it’s pretty awesome

  • Music

I came across this album on Reddit yesterday, and it’s magnificent. Atlas, from FM-84, is the lush, synth-heavy soundtrack to every 1980s movie where a lone cop takes down the cocaine kingpin who murdered his family. Or maybe it’s that summer at the shore where you stay out all night, fall in love, and never see her again because that’s how it works when you’re 15. Whatever it means to you, I think you’ll love this, especially if you’re Gen X.

That is perfect Wil. It would make some great summer evening listening too, under the stars, campfire, slight breeze blowing, etc.

For those interested, the album is also available to listen on Amazon Prime.

Easily one of my favorite albums! Some other artists to check out are The Midnight, GUNSHIP, Timecop1983, and Electric Youth. We share new music and other news on these bands and others at OutrunMusic.com. Really great genre to get into!

You should check out Lazerhawk’s Redline. It’s total 80’s exoticar bravado/action movie type stuff. If you’re unaware Miami Nights 1984’s “Early Summer” is also one of the, if not the best in the genre.

  15. Joel says:
    12 April, 2017 at 11:48 am

You need to listen to The Midnight then!! Both albums are awesome!

    1. Greg says:
      12 April, 2017 at 1:52 pm

Yes! Came here to say this. The Midnight’s Endless Summer is one of my favorite albums, not just of synthwave but of any music type.

    1. Mimi78 says:
      12 April, 2017 at 6:32 pm

How do I search by tags?

      1. Wil says:
        12 April, 2017 at 6:35 pm

When you go to an artist page, there are tags on it somewhere that you can click on.

Check Futurcop! – N.A.S.A. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYTwRVFHZjo) for some pure 80s synthwave nostalgia.
Also everything from Carpenter Brut and Kavinsky

There’s a ton of really quality songs out there in the genre. Most of it seems to be instrumental, but the songs that have vocals tend to be amazing. Check out Kristine for outstanding female vocals

Started having an anxiety attack about an hour ago. Now I’m hiding in my office at work and listening to this and it’s helping lower my anxiety. So ’80s music and music that sounds like it’s from the ’80s can soothe Gen X anxiety. Hooray!

Thank you for posting this, Wil.

Someone already mentioned Com Truise, but I just needed to stress how much you need his album In Decay in your life. I listen to that and the download of Woob that you sent in your Quarterly box on loop when I’m Making Things and it’s fantastic.

Welcome to the world of retrowave/synthwave. I came across that last summer (if only because YouTube pointed me that way based on searches I had made for “new wave playlist”). Check out Crystal City by Robert Parker (my favorite among last year’s releases; https://robertparkerofficial.bandcamp.com/album/crystal-city-12-vinyl-repress-sold-out).

I have to say that as someone who produces Synthwave music (that’s the actual name for it), I love when people discover it for the first time. It’s like listening to someone who’s just watched their first episode of Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad. I always get a bit jealous at the thought of everything they’re about to experience.

It’s clearly the theme song to the 1987 buddy cop road movie “Slippery Road” featuring Frank Cobretti and Lost Boys Saxophone Guy pursuing human traffickers between Galveston and Fort Lauderdale.
