I came across this album on Reddit yesterday, and it’s magnificent. Atlas, from FM-84, is the lush, synth-heavy soundtrack to every 1980s movie where a lone cop takes down the cocaine kingpin who murdered his family. Or maybe it’s that summer at the shore where you stay out all night, fall in love, and never see her again because that’s how it works when you’re 15. Whatever it means to you, I think you’ll love this, especially if you’re Gen X.

My favourite has to be foret de vin.
foret de vin is my favourite too.
Dude, if you liked that, you gotta try GUNSHIP: https://gunshipmusic.bandcamp.com/releases
There’s a whole load of gnarly stuff out there.
I am totally enjoying this right now in my office. Great album! Sounds like childhood.
Not bad, good background music. You’d probably like some of my husband’s stuff. Thanks for sharing that.
Thats kind of since Stranger Things
nah, synthwave has been round for years
Ok, I should say its gets a lot of attention on the web since Stranger Things
HAHAHA you are so wrong
Please be kind to your fellow commenters here.
Nice. Totally brings me back to Friday Night Videos
Oh, shiz!
Reference Achievement Unlocked.
That is perfect Wil. It would make some great summer evening listening too, under the stars, campfire, slight breeze blowing, etc.
For those interested, the album is also available to listen on Amazon Prime.
I would also recommend Dance with the Dead, Lazerhawk, Mitch Murder, and Carpenter Brut!
All those artists man!!! Especially Carpenter Brut bruh!!!!!
Easily one of my favorite albums! Some other artists to check out are The Midnight, GUNSHIP, Timecop1983, and Electric Youth. We share new music and other news on these bands and others at OutrunMusic.com. Really great genre to get into!
There is so much fantastic retrowave out there. I really dig the darker stuff–like Perturbator, ActRazer, etc.
This is the soundtrack to every Golan Globus production ever. Love it.
Yay, nobody else has recommended Scandroid yet! So … check out Scandroid too.
Just had a FLASHBACK! playing PacMac in the Arcade wearing My Levi 501 Button Fly jeans with my Hypercolor Shirt and Neon Green Hat with Frog Skin Oakley Sunglasses.
You should check out Lazerhawk’s Redline. It’s total 80’s exoticar bravado/action movie type stuff. If you’re unaware Miami Nights 1984’s “Early Summer” is also one of the, if not the best in the genre.
You need to listen to The Midnight then!! Both albums are awesome!
Yes! Came here to say this. The Midnight’s Endless Summer is one of my favorite albums, not just of synthwave but of any music type.
Bandcamp is your friend….all the best can be found at the tags outrun, retrowave, dreamwave and synthwave.
How do I search by tags?
When you go to an artist page, there are tags on it somewhere that you can click on.
Not sure what movie it brings to mind, but I know it stars members of the Brat Pack. And maybe Robert Downey Jr.
It’s Lost Boys, for me… that group with the buff sax player in the bandshell on the beach… remember?
Check Futurcop! – N.A.S.A. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYTwRVFHZjo) for some pure 80s synthwave nostalgia.
Also everything from Carpenter Brut and Kavinsky
Com Truise is another.
“If you want to escape, just say.” Wow, I had no idea this was a thing, but I am listening now and feeling all sorts of things: young, nostalgic, happy, safe. The power of music is amazing. Signed, born in 1976.
If you dig this album, check out ‘Endless Summer’ by The Midnight. 🙂

You have to check out The Midnight. Sunset is your friend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2D4iCzRW7E
There’s a ton of really quality songs out there in the genre. Most of it seems to be instrumental, but the songs that have vocals tend to be amazing. Check out Kristine for outstanding female vocals
The New Retrowave label has compilations of tracks as PWYW. https://newretrowave.bandcamp.com/album/the-80s-dream-compilation-tape
Oh great, because I definitely needed a retro soundtrack for this bizzarro world earth we now live on
Hey anyone thats new to the genre looking to get started I’ve got a whole bunch of synthwave / retrowave I made and you can get my whole discography (115 tracks) for €16

Started having an anxiety attack about an hour ago. Now I’m hiding in my office at work and listening to this and it’s helping lower my anxiety. So ’80s music and music that sounds like it’s from the ’80s can soothe Gen X anxiety. Hooray!
Thank you for posting this, Wil.
Someone already mentioned Com Truise, but I just needed to stress how much you need his album In Decay in your life. I listen to that and the download of Woob that you sent in your Quarterly box on loop when I’m Making Things and it’s fantastic.
I’m curious, which is your fave com truise album?
I’ve been jamming out to this since last summer. It’s one of my favorite albums of all time. I’ve listened to “Running in the Night” more times than I could count!
😍
I hope one day to make a living making synthwave. Unfortunately I’m not able to but if you want to hear my music you can sub to me on youtube right here I’d really appreciate it. https://www.youtube.com/c/FatalFriction
Renegade by Wolf and Raven is another great album/band! I totally got back into Retro/Synth Wave a little while back, made me think of my Commodore 64 days sigh
Welcome to the world of retrowave/synthwave. I came across that last summer (if only because YouTube pointed me that way based on searches I had made for “new wave playlist”). Check out Crystal City by Robert Parker (my favorite among last year’s releases; https://robertparkerofficial.bandcamp.com/album/crystal-city-12-vinyl-repress-sold-out).
I have to say that as someone who produces Synthwave music (that’s the actual name for it), I love when people discover it for the first time. It’s like listening to someone who’s just watched their first episode of Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad. I always get a bit jealous at the thought of everything they’re about to experience.
That image should have been a level in Super Breakout on the Atari 2600.
I like it. Good find.
Project Gagarine on Soundcloud and Bancamp is producing some very nice synthwave and darkwave tracks as well.
Damn it Wil. This is ridiculously good. Now I need to get this album and devote an absurd amount of my time delving into and exploring retrowave and reliving my John Hughes daydreams.
Hi everyone!
Allow me to completely and utterly make your day 🙂

Thanks fam just added some of your suggestions to Spotify ☺️
If you like Summers at the shore on planets beyond the Solar System in a retrowave manner don’ miss astraltales.bandcamp.com
For the lazy ones: https://astraltales.bandcamp.com/
WHEATON! What retro-rabbit hole have you sent me down? Some obscure bands are earning half-pennies from Spotify today.
this is amazing, thank you so much for sharing.
Retrowave is really not my cup of tea. Reminded me of Blade Runner, Tron or Flash Gordon. Today I prefer Indie, Trap, Lo-Fi Hip hop jazz. You might like this…..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NNOaYNqLo8&list=PLBXM7LwzOKbdalktdLi1i-SLYsKu85uUn&index=2
i lasted 12 seconds before i realized i needed to find ALL the FM-84. damn you Wheaton!
If you want some more of those sounds, from some lesser known retrowave artists, check out this channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/NeonNightsChannel
It features great synthwave, retrowave and other 80s inspired music and artists.
Future ’80s Records also have some amazing retrowave releases
https://future80s.bandcamp.com/
Oh, this is good.
It’s clearly the theme song to the 1987 buddy cop road movie “Slippery Road” featuring Frank Cobretti and Lost Boys Saxophone Guy pursuing human traffickers between Galveston and Fort Lauderdale.
In a similar vein, I really like Dynatron. Their Aeternus album is fantastic and always pops up on my synthwave/retrowave Pandora station.
FM-84, Kavinsky, Carpenter Brut, LeBrock, Mono Memory, Robert Parker, Kristine, Sunglasses Kid… all are awesome.
