In 2017, I wrote and published a novella called Dead Trees Give No Shelter. It’s a supernatural horror story about a man who is haunted by the memory of his younger brother’s death when they were children. In my story, he returns to the town he grew up in, looking for some closure and resolution to his brother’s senseless death, and he finds much, much more than he was expecting.
It gets really wonderful reviews on Goodreads (3.99/5.0), which is pretty cool, and a nice surprise for me, because I never looked until just now.
If you’re intrigued (and I hope you are), you can get it on Kindle, as an audiobook that I narrated, from Overdrive, or from me directly in multiple formats with no DRM.
It hasn’t been available in print, because I didn’t think it was a big enough piece of work to justify the expense and time involved in putting together a print run, but that’s about to change.
Earlier this year, I read this novella from Stephen King called ELEVATION. It didn’t feel too small to be in print, and I didn’t feel like I’d spent too much money on it, so I decided to take a chance, and hired my pal Will Hindmarch to do a hardback book design for me. He put together something beautiful and special, that I just love.
It’s going to be a very short print run, of just 250 books. I just uploaded the files for the printer, so it should be available in a few weeks. Normally, I wouldn’t say anything until it was ready, but I’m super excited to share this, and I hope 250 of you will be as excited to have a copy of your own.

Ever since losing my library in a house fire years ago, I don’t really dead-tree book anymore. However, this does intrigue me, so off to Amazon I go. Good luck and keep writing 🙂
That is great! I read Dead Trees probably a year ago and I still think of it all the time! And I read a LOT so very few books stick in my mind that long.
Same with me! I Out of the blue, I will think about the older brother and the younger brother. And the town. (Don’t want to spoil it for anyone.) It’s one of those stories that’s so good, that it’s seeped into my subconscious. I want to hear Wil read it now.
As one of the 300 I really hope I can get a copy of this too.
Just bought this on kindle on amazon uk. Looking forward to it
If you like it, I hope you’ll leave a review.
It’s easy enough to let Amazon do a Print on Demand (POD). I’ve done it for my book (as a paperback), and the printed copies turned out well. Formatting it was simple: set the paper size to 6×9, adjust page breaks so that the book starts on an odd-numbered page. And then upload to KDP at Amazon under your author account. They convert the doc to PDF, which is what they use to POD, and take a look at the PDF. Add the cover image. Then publish.
A simple process. Fulfillment by Amazon. They take out the printing cost which is about the same as self-POD (I have also used Lulu.com ). But letting them do all fulfillment is a time savings.
Good luck with the book! I suspect many of your followers will grab a copy.
I would love a copy
I would love a hard copy! How can we pre-order?
(Notice I didn’t even ask how much, I just want it!)
For sure I’ll get a copy! Can it be signed? Haha you rock Wil!
That would be awesome!!!
Yay! I will really try to get one! I loved your audio book recording and I do love hardcover books, even if I usually can’t afford them. I’m so glad you’re doing this! ☺
Take my money!!
I suspect you will need more than 250 of them, it was a good story and people love you.
This is exciting news. I have read this novella, and it’s fantastic. Good luck with the hard cover edition!
I get all your books as physical copies…I can’t wait to add this to the mix 🙂
Oh definitely getting a printed copy, as soon as you know where I need to go and click on things to buy the hardcover. I’ll do so! 🙂
Wishing it was out now so I could ask you to sign it aw AwesomeCon this weekend. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing you with some of your old compatriots.
Heck, yeah, I’ll totally buy a copy!
I am not sure how I missed this previously. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to hear you narrate. I am adding this to my collection and will be looking forward to my next flight to enjoy it
Sold! Will there be any kind of pre-order?
Where will we order it from?
Wonderful! I’d love to buy a couple!! Let us know and soon as we can order it. 🙂
I would LOVE a physical book! This is exciting!
Being one of 250 sounds good to me! Bravo Wil!
I very much enjoyed the story and would love a copy!
Whee! Sign me up for one of the copies(pretty please). How are you handling orders and all the assorted stuff that comes with sending out your baby to strangers?
My plan is to work with the same system Anne uses for Piggy and Pug, just on a smaller scale. I’ll post links and information here as soon as I have it set up.
It’s going to Family, not strangers.
Wil is a favorite Cousin you don’t get to see enough of.
Yay for you! Can’t wait to read it!
Can’t wait to read it.
Where can I be the lucky 300?? how do I go about getting a copy?
Looks like you are well on your way towards having all 250 copies claimed! I wish I could read/watch horror – maybe I’ll get one for my hubby!
Any hints on where it will be sold? I don’t want to miss my chance at a copy. I loved the story and would love to own a physical copy.
I haven’t gotten it set up, yet, but I’ll post an announcement and links here when it’s ready.
Same question as many, just let me know how and when to order it!
I would like a hardcover copy! 🙂
Can’t wait to add it to my Wheaton collection. Can I be greedy and order two? My son is also a big fan of your writing!!
Are you going to officially call the print version “Dead Trees Give No Shelter: The Dead Tree Edition”?
I can not believe I didn’t think of this myself, and I’m going to steal it for future use.
This is what I’m here for. disappears in cloud of blue smoke
i love this book! love that you did the audio!
I think I would be interested in this.
This is something special. I would be delighted to spend money on and own it. Looking forward to further news!
Hi Wil – I’m totally on team dead tree, hoping I can get in for a copy!
Wil, do you have any idea how many real fans you have out there willing to buy an autographed special edition ?
I guarantee you will do very well, a book signing and appearances wouldn’t hurt either.
Can’t wait to get a copy !
I come from a background of Library and Archives from Alverno College! I really love preservation of rare books! Are you auctioning off these rare books to the highest bidder?
I don’t have any plans to do that, but if someone buys one and wants to put it into an auction, I’d certainly support their right to do that.
I would like to auction your book on eBay for charity for NAMI and NAMIWALKS! I am Team Captain of NAMIWALKS Team White Turtle Rainbow Remembering my Mom Eleanor Marie Monteen Soto (suicide) on May 18 in Milwaukee at Veterans Park. My goal is to raise $1000 in her name!
Wil would you join my NAMIWALKS team to honor my mom (suicide) ? You can be a virtual walker from CA. Me and my 30 Pokémon Go Friends are playing Pokémon Go in my mom’s honor on May 18. I will be at NAMIWALKS at Veterans Park! I am trying to see if I can get t-shirts for my White Turtle Rainbow Team! The cotton people company you used to make your latest Wil Dark Moon 🌚 t-shirts! Tomorrow is New Moon Ceremony for my Mom!
In. 🙂
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!… I mean, pretty please, with sugar on top, I’d like to order one 😉
I had about thirty boxes of books a few years back.
Lots of rare and unique stuff.
I drove it all to a local library and left it.
I couldn’t bring myself to sell it.
Now I got an iPad.
I don’t like this planet.
When/where is this available?! Take my money!!
I bought “Dead Trees” for my kindle after reading about it here and really enjoyed your writing! So then I downloaded “Memories of the Future” and am enthralled! Wonderful! So funny and so cool! Will? I don’t know if you realize it but to many of us you were our favorite character in the series. And the message that adults ought to to pay attention to the wisdom of children/teens/young adults was very important. I now see a world that would be much better if we had learned to take the young as seriously as they deserved. We love you and we loved Wesley.
Whenever I hear the word “novella,” I want to eat petit fours.
Count me in.
Count me in! Let us know when preorders start! Also: It was such a pleasure meeting you yesterday at Awesome Con. Kaiel was also so happy to meet you – and really got a kick watching his Mom suddenly become a giddy, babbling fangirl. And while there wasn’t time for me to elaborate in the moment, I really want to let you know that your candid writing about depression and anxiety has had a profound and positive effect on my life, allowing me to see, in words, so many things that I have trouble articulating. You make a difference in people’s lives. You certainly have made one in mine.
Hey, Wil, I’ve got your “Calamari Damacy” quote in my quotes file now, attributed to you. Thanks for putting some funny on the bottom of my emails.
Looking forward to “Dead Trees Give No Shelter”, btw. I have the audiobook queued up on my phone for my next plane trip.
