50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

coming soon: a limited edition hardcover novella

  • Books

In 2017, I wrote and published a novella called Dead Trees Give No Shelter. It’s a supernatural horror story about a man who is haunted by the memory of his younger brother’s death when they were children. In my story, he returns to the town he grew up in, looking for some closure and resolution to his brother’s senseless death, and he finds much, much more than he was expecting.

It gets really wonderful reviews on Goodreads (3.99/5.0), which is pretty cool, and a nice surprise for me, because I never looked until just now.

If you’re intrigued (and I hope you are), you can get it on Kindle, as an audiobook that I narrated, from Overdrive, or from me directly in multiple formats with no DRM.

It hasn’t been available in print, because I didn’t think it was a big enough piece of work to justify the expense and time involved in putting together a print run, but that’s about to change.

Earlier this year, I read this novella from Stephen King called ELEVATION. It didn’t feel too small to be in print, and I didn’t feel like I’d spent too much money on it, so I decided to take a chance, and hired my pal Will Hindmarch to do a hardback book design for me. He put together something beautiful and special, that I just love.

It’s going to be a very short print run, of just 250 books. I just uploaded the files for the printer, so it should be available in a few weeks. Normally, I wouldn’t say anything until it was ready, but I’m super excited to share this, and I hope 250 of you will be as excited to have a copy of your own.

Ever since losing my library in a house fire years ago, I don’t really dead-tree book anymore. However, this does intrigue me, so off to Amazon I go. Good luck and keep writing 🙂

That is great! I read Dead Trees probably a year ago and I still think of it all the time! And I read a LOT so very few books stick in my mind that long.

Same with me! I Out of the blue, I will think about the older brother and the younger brother. And the town. (Don’t want to spoil it for anyone.) It’s one of those stories that’s so good, that it’s seeped into my subconscious. I want to hear Wil read it now.

It’s easy enough to let Amazon do a Print on Demand (POD). I’ve done it for my book (as a paperback), and the printed copies turned out well. Formatting it was simple: set the paper size to 6×9, adjust page breaks so that the book starts on an odd-numbered page. And then upload to KDP at Amazon under your author account. They convert the doc to PDF, which is what they use to POD, and take a look at the PDF. Add the cover image. Then publish.

A simple process. Fulfillment by Amazon. They take out the printing cost which is about the same as self-POD (I have also used Lulu.com ). But letting them do all fulfillment is a time savings.

Good luck with the book! I suspect many of your followers will grab a copy.

I come from a background of Library and Archives from Alverno College! I really love preservation of rare books! Are you auctioning off these rare books to the highest bidder?

    1. Wil says:
      2 May, 2019 at 1:29 pm

I don’t have any plans to do that, but if someone buys one and wants to put it into an auction, I’d certainly support their right to do that.

      1. Wenona Gardner says:
        3 May, 2019 at 1:13 am

I would like to auction your book on eBay for charity for NAMI and NAMIWALKS! I am Team Captain of NAMIWALKS Team White Turtle Rainbow Remembering my Mom Eleanor Marie Monteen Soto (suicide) on May 18 in Milwaukee at Veterans Park. My goal is to raise $1000 in her name!

I had about thirty boxes of books a few years back.

Lots of rare and unique stuff.

I drove it all to a local library and left it.

I couldn’t bring myself to sell it.

    Now I got an iPad.

    I don’t like this planet.

I bought “Dead Trees” for my kindle after reading about it here and really enjoyed your writing! So then I downloaded “Memories of the Future” and am enthralled! Wonderful! So funny and so cool! Will? I don’t know if you realize it but to many of us you were our favorite character in the series. And the message that adults ought to to pay attention to the wisdom of children/teens/young adults was very important. I now see a world that would be much better if we had learned to take the young as seriously as they deserved. We love you and we loved Wesley.

Count me in! Let us know when preorders start! Also: It was such a pleasure meeting you yesterday at Awesome Con. Kaiel was also so happy to meet you – and really got a kick watching his Mom suddenly become a giddy, babbling fangirl. And while there wasn’t time for me to elaborate in the moment, I really want to let you know that your candid writing about depression and anxiety has had a profound and positive effect on my life, allowing me to see, in words, so many things that I have trouble articulating. You make a difference in people’s lives. You certainly have made one in mine.

Hey, Wil, I’ve got your “Calamari Damacy” quote in my quotes file now, attributed to you. Thanks for putting some funny on the bottom of my emails.

Looking forward to “Dead Trees Give No Shelter”, btw. I have the audiobook queued up on my phone for my next plane trip.
