As many of you know, I absolutely love Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Many of you also know that since 2019, I have had the pleasure and privilege of hosting The Ready Room, your home for all things Star Trek Universe. It’s one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever had. Top three, for sure. Maybe top two. I’m so grateful that I get to do this thing that brings together my love for all things Star Trek, my 30ish years of experience being part of all things Star Trek, and gives me the opportunity, if I do it right, to be a Trekkie who brings my fellow Trekkies into the room where it happens. I do not take a single second of it for granted.
There’s INSANELY COOL Ready Room stuff coming up that I can’t talk about. In fact, I’ve already said too much, and you should probably forget I said anything. But there’s also an INSANELY COOL thing that I can share right now.
If you’re in the Ready Room audience (thank you for watching!), you have already seen this, and you know what it means to me. For y’all who haven’t, here’s me, Wil Wheaton, drawn by an actual Lower Decks animator, as a Lower Decker. Please note this is NOT Wesley Crusher. This is me. Like, this is how I would look if I were part of the Lower Decks. This is Ensign Wheaton, of the USS Cerritos:
That guy TOTALLY hangs out with Tendi and Rutherford. They are buddies. I just know it.
I doubt very much this is as thrilling to anyone else in the world as it is to me, but I’ve been dying to show it off since I got the images from production. I’m stoked to share them today. I feel like I should wrap this up with a thousand words about how special this is, and how happy it makes me, but I just can’t find the right way to express it. All I can get out is something like, “I just love this, and I am so grateful it exists.”
I think maybe that’s enough.
How do we get you a speaking role on Lower Decks? Like for a full season? Why has this not happened yet – it seems like a natural.
Oh, yes, please! I definitely want this to happen.
I totally agtee!! Wil would crush it! If they can bring back Sonia Gomez (SPOILER ALERT!!) they can bring back Wesley Crusher!!
If you’re going to do a (SPOILER ALERT!!) it may be a good idea to put it before the spoiler info rather than after! 🙂
The spoiler alert was before the spoiler info but the anti-time anomaly from All Good Things fouled it up. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
That would be awesome!! Do we write to the show creators?
Cool!!!
Love it. That show is so great.
I haven’t seen the latest Ready Room, but this is insanely cool… except that I’m sure if you should be an ensign. I mean given all the time since the last time you were in a Federation starship, you should be at least a lieutenant… oh, wait, that is Wesley, not you. My bad. 😉
That is too cool!! I love it and I am ecstatic to know it makes you happy.
Ok I read this three times, but I am gasp excited at this production drawing. Does it also mean you’re voicing Wil Wheaton of the USS Cerritos? Because I want that too.
My idea: Ensign Wil Wheaton meets Lt. Commander Wesley Crusher.
@Carl Setzer….YES!!
That would be amazing. A brilliant idea.
I’m sorry. I’ve completely forgotten what you just said. Except Ensign Wheaton fits right in and is fabulous!
This is SO RAD!
Your reaction on seeing the drawing was priceless! If they ever do offer you a role on Lower Decks, they’d probably better sedate you first!
How cool!!!!
Looks good, Wil.
Whatever you can’t yet talk about, I hope you’re having fun with that too.
Take care, okay?
We may not be AS excited as you, Wil. But I think it’s pretty awesome.
This is really awesome.
Ensign? I think you should at least be Commander Wheaton by now.
Awesome!!!
This makes me so happy! And we are loving Lower Decks. It’s hilarious.
Saw this created in The Ready Room. Thought you were going to explode. Hope your copy gets signed & lovingly placed in Castle Wheaton.
Your face when they revealed that sketch was an image of pure, unmitigated joy, and it was just beautiful to see!
Oh my god! Love it! The Lower Decks team is SO creative … they could totally put YOU (as Ensign Wheaton) into the mix!
Maybe have you found in cryogenic stasis from the mid-2050s or something … whatever fits with the Trek timeline …
It would be a “hat tip” to the whole Khan thing and just the kind of cheeky / cool thing they’d do. I can just see the deadpan
quote from Mariner now: “You know, you kinda look like this OTHER Starfleet Officer I once heard about … nah, you haven’t heard of him … Another ‘weird shit happens in Starfleet’ story we’ll tell you later over a drink.”
Something like that. I’m sure that whatever you / the Lower Decks team came up with would be immeasurably cooler.
Yes, yes, yes! It would be totally in keeping with the vibe of Lower Decks.
I’m thinking that maybe there are no eyeglasses by that time, though? But I’m sure they could be worked into the story!
How many times has Ensign Wheaton beat Boimler out for choice assignments?
I’m trying to decide if they are friends, or the fiercest of rivals.
Or both?
Both is good!
Wil, your a ham. It’s nice to see someone has made a bobble of you. I do have one question. Are you being offered any parts right now. It seems like the market is dry for you right now. Acting I have found out is the easy part but the process of finding a part is stress on steroids. Are you having trouble getting gigs?
All I can see is the little kid on the bike at the end of the Incedibles who says “That was Totally Wicked!” .
And I haven’t even seen the thing I’ve already forgotten you’ve told us about.
This is so awesome! I hope they can give you a part in the next season, maybe as yourself in a holodeck program.
Red shirt? Really?
I always figured you as a yellow shirt guy.
Live long and SUCK IT!!
I think I’m more Command than Engineering, and I am DEFINITELY not Security.
LOL! No, definitely not security. And heaven forbid not another Science Blue shirt guy. But, maybe, one of the many engineers that have a valid purpose on the ship. With your experience with gaming, the Technician that maintains the Holosuite would be a possibility or the guy that recalibrates the teleport transporters (those things get a hell of a lot of work, and probably need to be retweaked daily to clear out the buffer of memory patterns to keep people/critters from being morphed into something you really don’t want to see).
Thanks again.
What department goes best with roaming the decks with a shit-eating grin, taking selfies with the crew, and repeatedly exclaiming, “Look at me! I’m on the Cerritos! Can you believe it?”
Thanks for sharing. 🙂 I love that they did this for you. I would totally geek out if you got on the show. In fact, I’m such a geek, I just made one of these images into a wallpaper for my laptop!
This is downright bitchin’ and I’m so happy for you!!!
This is so very cool—now they need to put you on that show!!
Can we get a Lower Decks episode where Wesley and the Traveler get into some kind of trouble and it’s Ensign Wheaton who saves the day?
YES PLEASE!
It’s you! Congrats on the role and on the continuing joy that Star Trek (and you!) give us all!
I think this news merits a thousand words and I would read them all.
OMG Wil, I just found that episode of The Ready Room and literally teared up watching your utter and complete joy. Enjoy a kazillion times over, Ensign Wheaton!
I think that is totally awesome! A very big round of congratulatory applause is in order. This is very cool and I am very happy for you.
Fantastic! Lower Decks is by far my favourite New Trek product, I’m finishing watching Season 2 this week!
I love Lower Decks, and knowing how much Star Trek in general means to you makes this so cool! Congratulations ensign Wheaton
Eeeeeeee!!!
I may not be AS thrilled, but I’m running a close second!!!
It’s too bad humans don’t do zoomies, because that’s the best expression of sheer joy I’ve ever seen. Congrats!!!
Very very very bodaciously cool!!
Very cool! Question is tho is Wesley Crusher coming back from his journeys in some form? It would be epic to see you in Picard
That would be a great idea. And Wesley should be at least MENTIONED in Picard no matter what. We never found out what happened to him over the years.
How awesome! I love Lower Decks too.
Why is he wearing glasses? Are you allergic to Retinax? 😉
I just left feedback on the Paramount+ website. I don’t know if it will amount to anything but maybe if everybody gets on-board, it will. Here’s what I said: “Star Trek: Lower Decks is a wonderful show. It will be better when you introduce Wesley Crusher as a character on the show. Commander Crusher! Captain Crusher! Wesley the Traveler! Please make this happen.”
You guys could call your LD group the “Wesley Crushers”!
As a fellow Star Trek fan, I thought it was pretty cool when they presented the drawing to you on The Ready Room. This is respect.
I have never watched Lower Decks, and yet I can totally see Ensign Wil Wheaton. Started his career late after spending years travelling on starships for some reason or another.
Your future-self must be allergic to Retinax V, too.
With one of your Stand By Me buddies as a regular on the show I really hope they’ll include a nod. 😀
I’d love to see you with a cameo, doing that ironic Vulcan hand salute!
They should have you voice this ensign, as well as Lt. Crusher in lower decks. It would be great to see an interaction where Lt Crusher is ordering Ensign Wheaton to do repairs in a Jeffrey’s tube, and Crusher mutters about overbearing officers as he walks away with Tendi
30 years… 30 years!!! And you got ‘ensign kim’ed’???? You’d think they’d at least bump you to Lt. Cmdr….
Ensign Wheaton probably comes from the same alternate reality as Tapestry where Picard was a lieutenant junior grade.
Wil,
I am not sure if you personally monitor this account. If you do…just a quick note to say thank you. Star Trek has had a large and positive impact on my life and the interview with Mary on this week’s Ready Room was one of the most beautiful moments I can remember across the entire franchise. Thank you, very, very much for sharing yourself with the world in that way. It means a lot anyway, and on a day in my life when I’m In a very stressful transitional period in my own profession and dealing with what that means for my personal life, it was so incredibly meaningful. Thank you!
