Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Want to see Grant Wilson’s company’s games please
The firefly board game 🙂
Bausack is a bit hard to find nowadays, but it’s so much fun. It’s been published by a wide variety of companies in various countries, but it seems like Milton Bradley picked it up for America.
It’s a screw-your-neighbor block stacking game, with lots of interestingly shaped pieces, many of which stack quite well despite being oddly shaped.
Bonanza Beans card game. I think it would be perfect!! I love that you have to play your cards in the order they are in your hand, in order they are picked up.
P. S. Love this show! Watched episodes more than once. Irrestibly delightful!
I second this one! Great player interaction too with this game, so it would be fun to watch 🙂
Dice town!!! Cowboys and poker with a sheriff
Eldritch horror.
Two hottest games
Splendor, legendary.
Pirate games
Jamaica or libertalia
Hanabi is a must must game
Stone Age/kingsburg/Bruges/
Or
Ghost stories
Caverna
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/102794/caverna-cave-farmers
1: 1-7 people, and a 4 person game works well
2: So it’s a little long, clocking in at over 2 hours, but there’s a decent amount of low action time that can easily be edited out.
3: Quick explanation to the audience should be relatively easy.
4: There is very little randomness to the game (what available action appears where and when the harvest rounds are, but that’s about it), but there is a lot of luck in not having your opponents take the one action or one tile that you really want. Also a fair amount of skill in knowing what strategy to pursue.
5: Individual game boards are small, but detailed enough to provide good presentation
6: You haven’t played it, or it’s predecessor, Agricola, on Tabletop.
I would have hesitated to suggest Agricola, mainly because of the increased randomness from being dealt a hand of occupation and tool cards. While good strategy can usually overcome a bad hand, stellar hands played well are nearly impossible to beat. This
My second recommendation would be Legendary.
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/129437/legendary-marvel-deck-building-game
While I normally wouldn’t suggest a deck building game for Tabletop, the fact that Legendary is a co-op/competitive game sets it apart from many others in the genre. Play time can be a little short, though.
Doomtown: Reloaded
Ca$h ‘n Gun$ (2nd edition)
Courtier or Dominare
I played Hanabi this summer at Origins, and I think it would be a great fit for Tabletop! I sought it out because I was looking for cooperative games that could help third graders in my class with team-building. To win the game, you have to think about what you’re doing, make observations, make inferences, and trust your teammates. You also need some luck with the shuffling in order to get the highest score possible. It’s helpful to play with a veteran or two, because there are some good tips to playing that aren’t officially in the rules. (For example, holding the cards in your hand differently so you remember which ones you were given clues about/to show the other players which ones you already were given clues about.)
Obviously I bought it, and have so far played it with just adults, just kids, and mixed groups of adults and kids. Most people have liked it very much, or at least they didn’t hate it! I also think it would be very entertaining to watch other people play it.
Red November
Kingdom Builder
Village (maybe not enough luck involved in this one? still could be fun with a creative group that can tell stories about how everyone dies…)
(even if you can’t fit these on TableTop, I still highly recommend at least playing them yourself. 🙂
Suggestions for season 3:
– Sentinels of the Multiverse
A dice themed episode where you play a bunch of quick dice games like C’thulu Dice, Bang!, one of the expansions for Zombie Dice, Chupacabra: Survive the Night, Liar’s Dice … you get what I’m saying
Ghost Stories
Maybe have an old school ’80’s Suburbia themed “Game Night” ep – the games wouldn’t be as “cool” as some you’ve already played. Bonus points if you actually dig up the original ’80’s games. Make the ep more about the nostalgia than the game
– Monopoly, Trouble, Sorry, Yahtzee, Twister(TeamUnicorn FTW), Charades.
Winter Tales
(Also, not a suggestion but a statement followed by a question: I have been playing stripped down versions of Elder Sign and a D&D board game with my 5 year old son. Is there anything out there that beats Candyland, Chutes and Ladders and all the other typical children’s games?)
King of New York?! …nod to your episode with King of Tokyo.
Librarians of Doom, Monster Force, Angry Flowers, The Robot Invasion From Planet 01000101, Monkey’s on Juice, Krampus Race, Mothman, or Bikinis, Boards , and Bongos and I’d be happy!
Lord of the Rings

Firefly the Board Game
Trajan
Agricola
Firefly would be great get Nathan Fillion to come play with ya
Mice and Mystics (Plaid Hat Games)
It’s adorable and adventurous, like The Secret of Nimh meets Dungeons and Dragons miniatures.
Forbidden Desert (Gamewright)
The sequel to Forbidden Island, with some key differences in the mechanics and the theme. The person who controls the water tends to become a tyrant by accident, and that’s usually funny.
Zombicide (Guillotine Games)
Well-designed Zombie survival. Makes you think three moves ahead, and just as fun to lose as it is to win. One person might sacrifice themselves for the good of the mission, which is a legitimate winning strategy.
Dungeon Roll (Tasty Minstrel)
Beautiful D&D themed dice for good guys and bad guys. Gorgeous cards, good treasure hunting mechanic. More decision making and leveling up than Zombie Dice.
Tokaido (Passport Game Studios)
Clever movement system to keep the party together. The theme starts you off with a false sense of peace and calm, before the vain competitiveness kicks in. “My vacation is gonna be SO MUCH better than yours!”
Discworld: Ankh-Morpork (MayFair Games)
Dozens of awesome Terry Pratchett characters, fighting for control of neighborhoods in Ankh-Morpork, lighting buildings on fire, casting spells, summoning golems.
Star Trek Attack Wing (WizKids)
Pew pew! Shields up! Fire photon torpedo! Redirect auxiliary power!
Red Dragon Inn (Slugfest Games)
Enough adventuring already. Buy me a mead!
Dominion
High Command
Boss Monster
Zombies Keep Out
Infernal Contraption
Any of the DnD “Adventure System” Board Games (Wrath of Ashardalon, etc)
I think it would be cool if you replayed some alternate versions of games you’ve already done. For instance the Seafarers expansion for Settlers of Catan, or Ticket to Ride Asia.
Obviously new games are fun to see, but there’s no reason not to revisit a few alternate versions of the classics too.
The Discworld board game is a very silly and fun one for 4 players. For a great coop game look up Jupiter Rescue. You play a group of robots attempting to evacuate a space station that is overrun by a plague turning its inhabitants to creeps. I believe it’s put out by Twilight Creations.
Honestly can’t think of anything I’m more stoked for the RPG channel. Have y’all worked out the details of that whether it will be something along the lines of pathfinder or more futuristic base like FTL or Shadowrun
Actual just thought of on Mystic Warlords of Ka’a
Wil Wheaton and Sheldon Cooper rematch episode
Bean! by Jeff Freels
Dead of Winter is a great, emergent story driven zombie survival game from Plaid Hat Games, would be an awesome one.
I like the cooperative games that have been played in tabletop. Have you ever played “Ghost Stories” or “Witch of Salem”?
Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
2 suggestions.
1) Superfight. It is similar to Cards Against Humanity or Apples To Apples. There are character cards and attributes (positive and negative) and you basically decide who would win in a fight. For example, T-rex with robot legs and low self esteem vs Hobbit with a light saber and a 3 second memory span. I think it would be awesome to see you and your semi-celebrity friends debate on these.
2) Boss Monster. I was going to buy this game but everyone I would play it with already bought it themselves. It’s a dungeon building card game inspired by 8/16-bit RPGs. You build a dungeon to lure heroes to their doom. Different heroes seek different loot and have different HP. If you destroy the hero, you get a soul gem (victory point). If the hero survives, you take a wound. There are also spell cards that can help you or hurt others.
Also, my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed Lords of Waterdeep at GenCon this year which I checked out because I saw it on Tabletop.
I’d love to see you play your old Mad Magazine game…maybe for an April Fool’s episode?

Pandemic: On The Brink – BioTerrorist
Sushi Go!
Caverna
GoT the Board Game 2nd Edition
Suburbia
Did you already do Memoir 44?
7 Wonders
Pandemic in the Lab Expansion
SmallWorld Underground
Nuclear War by Buffalo Games (Very difficult to find)
Caverna
Agricola
Stone Age
Sentinals of the multiverse!
I just got Gravwell by Corey Young (just came out recently) and it fits the criteria of the show perfectly. Anyone can win because you need to use everyone to win.
Hi, I’ve newly found your tabletop shows. I’d love to see you play Talisman. I don’t know if you’ve done this before, I’m catching up on your shows. Also I know it can be long winded, but it is a cool game. Thanks.
X-Machina – Blood and Cardstock Games. Kinda like Apples to Apples for Engineers
Dead of Winter
Plaid Hat Games
It is a co-op game where everyone has their own agenda. Makes for awesome stories and great times. Visually appealing too.
Basic rules could probably be done in 5 mins, with specific rules explained when they are encountered. Has a D12 rolled when moving that might result in a character straight up dying.
Game would probably be a little north of 90 mins, but very close to that if player know the rules. Has a variety of scenarios to choose from to help adjust the length.
Plays 4 wonderfully.
Guillotine – how can you not love a humorous game about decapitating the 1%?
Monopoly Deal – it’s a silly, fast card game inspired by Monopoly which, unlike Monopoly, is actually fun and can be played in a reasonable length of time.
Power Grid – Don’t think it would translate well to video, but it’s still a great game (though it’s probably got too much strategy and not enough luck).
Revolution – because, like Guillotine, overthrowing the established order with a bunch of friends is a great way to spend an afternoon.
You should do a classics episode. Dark Tower (one of the first electronic board games). While difficult to find, i am sure you have the resources to find the game.
QUELF. Not sure if you have done this one. It is a very silly game. Time can vary on this game. 5 players is better.
1 Firefly- the Board Game
2 Boss Monster
3 Castellan
4 HeroClix
5 munchkin panic (when it comes out)
I have to agree with Boss Monster. It’s great fun from a small publisher. Can I also toss in the classic Axis and Allies. Might go longer than 90 minutes though.
Discworld Ankh-Morpork. Each player has a different win conditions as a character from the book series. Also character cards are drawn face down so you have to figure out what other people are doing, thwart them, and fulfill your own conditions. Plus Pratchett humor.
Lets see some indie games.
Whispering Road
Dreaming in Gears
The Coin’s Hard Edge
Trash Planet
I’d love to see Dominion, from Rio Grande Games. My favorite thing about the game is that, by changing up what Kingdom cards you use, you can play games that feel completely different.
Dead of Winter is very immersive and strongly themed. Pandemic Contagion would be cool too.
Kingsburg seems like it would really work with your format.
Shinobi Clans and The Game of 49 look good but I haven’t gotten them on the table.
Love Letter is cool but too short for the show unless you are doing a combo show.
Oooooh, gonna second some good suggestions I saw here that I didn’t think to mention: Splendor, Bang!, Suburbia, and RoboRally. I haven’t played Dead of Winter so I couldn’t recommend it, but it certainly SOUNDS entertaining.
I don’t know enough boardgames to suggest any specific ones, but I’d like to see another miniatures game.
I do want to ask if you’re glad that you’ll be filming in October rather than August. No ‘Slow-roasted Guests and Host’ at the end of an episode.
Sheriff of Nottingham, for sure. Great bluffing game, lots of tension before the packs are opened.
I’d like to see Slash: Romance without Boundaries. It’s essentially Apples-to-Apples with a fanfiction theme on top. Simple mechanics, story-telling, and fan service all in one.
Chicken Caesar is a light social game. Imagine a coop of chickens that have modeled their government on the Roman Empire. Uses voting and bribing primarily. The components are great. Also good for puns.
Taluva is a little-known gem. It’s an abstract tile-laying and placement game with some good player interaction. The components are gorgeous. Whenever my group plays this at the café we always get compliments and questions from passers-by. This game sucks people in even if they’re not gamers.
If you’re up for a micro-RPG again this season why not Baron Munchausen? Or for something a little more dramatic and interesting: Durance?
Can’t wait for the new season.
Shadows of brimstone.
It’s the wild West meets Lovecraft horror. A co-op RPG in a box that supports 1 to 4 players (6 with the other core set) it uses dice for combat and skill checks. Looks like it has great minis and a good choice of scenarios. Made by flying frog productions(makers of last night on earth).
Excuse my outdoor voice, but… LIBERTALIA IS THE IDEAL CHOICE.
Android: Infiltration could work. It might be a little more luck based than you prefer, but there’s still a lot of decision making and ways to swing the odds in your favour via the use of items.
I would love to see dual-purpose games – one of my personal favorites is Chrononauts, but the reason why I like it so much is because it can be played in a solitaire mode, thus making it dual-purpose. My friends have little to no time to game in this phase of our lives, so the solitaire option is nice. It would be lovely to see other games like this, that option is not well advertised and hard to find.
Bloodbowl.
If you get two sets it’s playable by four people. Though it looks best on camera if you have the miniatures painted rather than how they are out of the box. Put your miniature-painting nerd friends to work. =)
Kill Doctor Lucky is a fun game. Sort of like anti-Clue; instead of solving a murder, you are trying to commit one. Everyone wants to kill Doctor Lucky, but they don’t want anyone ELSE to do the deed. And as you are thwarted time and again, your rage grows (in the form of tokens), which you can use to fuel your attacks.
Article 27, by Stronghold Games. Why do I enjoy the game.. other than because its fun? I dont honestly know how better to explain that lol
