Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Might I suggest something from my corner of the world? It’s called “Abetto”, and it is essentially a 4-player Victorian parkour with a twist, beautifully made and quite engaging. Although designed in Poland, it’s available in English as well – some more details can be found here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/86768/abetto
…plus, how often do you find a game in which the success or failure of a duel/break-in/shot is decided by a ROULETTE rather than a dice?…
Looking forward to Season Three!
Quantum, quick 4x game with dice
Augustus, themed bingo, should be perfect for the show.
Camel Up, betting game, spiel 2014 winner
Concordia, fun euro with easy rules, but lots of strategy
Coup + Divinare, two fillers, should be fun
Ghost Stories, hard coop, prepare to lose
Kemet, one of the best, area control, maybe a little to long for the show
King of New York, should be readily available when the show airs.
Last Will, fun worker placement, whoever spends money the fastest is the winner
Rampage, dexterity game
Seasons, 4 player MtG like game with dice.
Skull (& Roses), super fun bluffing game, but would be best with 6 players, maybe do a 6 player episode with Coup?
Splendor, pure, fun, engine building
Steam Park, theme park for robots
Suburbia, best city building game
Zombicide and Dead of Winter
Pirates-Ninjas-Robots-Zombies…
http://www.ratherdashinggames.com/#!pirates-ninjas-robots–zombies/c14fo
Bang!, Eldritch Horror, cash and guns or red dragon inn. Would be awesome additions
Here are some suggestions from my personal collection that you still haven’t played:
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/43868/adventurers-temple-chac
Indiana Jones at its best. Avoid the traps, grab the treasures and get out of the temple before the rolling boulder get’s you. Absolutely gorgeous components.
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/65244/forbidden-island
Forbidden Island is an excellent co-op family game. And it get’s really intense towards the end.
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28143/race-galaxy
Race for the Galaxy is a fun card game where you have to manage your hand to dominate your opponents.
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9220/saboteur
Sabouteur is the perfect party game with dwarves, gold and traitors.
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13308/niagara
A beautiful game where you ride the river rapids racing to gather gems. Fun, intense, and looks great.
7 Wonders!
Exclude Hanging Gardens of Babylon though. The player with Babylon does not have a good time.
Rather Dashing Games
Galactic Strike Force
My vote is on:
Zombie 15
Euphoria
Sheriff of Nottingham
King of New York
Mice and Mystics
Splendor
Munchkin Cthulhu
Ascension
Also, I would love to see Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillon and Brian Posehn in one episode. Maybe You’ll manage to team up with Brian and trick Joss and Nathan to reboot Firefly or try kickstarter at least. 😛
Dead of Winter
Space Alert
Cosmic Encounter would be fun. Possibly played with four planets each to make it quicker. Perhaps played with the reward deck from Cosmic Incursion. That’s a good trade off between fun and complexity IMO.
Yes. Cosmic Encounter. Definitely. Such a good game for being social, and Wil always has social people on the show.
RoboRally could just squeeze in if you play a basic map & only start with 2 lives.
You should re-visit some of the earlier games & add in your favourite expansion/s for them.
Fresco
Sentinels of the Multiverse
The one i really love to see you play is escape fron colditz, it would be grate to see you playing this classic game, and you Wil as german player!.
I love your show!.
Gloom, a game where everybody gets a family wich they will try to make as unhapy as possible before they die ^^ It doesn’t sound that way, but it’s a funny game
Gloom was already played on Tabletop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0artLwe87I4
They’ve already done it 🙂
They’ve already featured Gloom on Tabletop.
Zombicide fits well into the criteria. It’s co-op, and that means everyone (or no one) can win.
Descent is super fun, and has a lot of visual to it with the mini-figs. Since it is more or less episodic, you can pick a quest that fits best with the players and show time.
Boss Monster is a fun, quick, simple game that could be paired with something else like you did with 12 Days and Qwirkle. OOOH! Like Dungeon Dice! Though I don’t think that one is as much fun to watch.
More RPGs!
Kill Dr Lucky- the opposite of Clue. For extra laughs add ‘And His Little Dog Too’.
Frag- you keep threatening guests with this. Time to deliver. 🙂
Chrononauts- fun with changing history.
Guillotine- play headsmen during the French Revolution.
Star Trek Attack Wing- Borg, Borg, Borg…
And of course Cards Against Humanity.
I’d try Zeppelin Attack, from Evil Hat
2-4 players, 45 minutes, beautiful art and great on camera
http://www.evilhat.com/home/zeppelin-attack/
P.S: So excited about seeing my name on the wall!
I’d like to suggest something by Phil Eklund and Sierra Madre games.
High Frontier would be cool, but it’s kinda complex and game time might be too long for your format, even with editing.
America Megafauna, prehistoric fun. Better fits your format, fun and educational.
The Artifact could also be cool, scifi fun, but as I recall needs a non-player ref. As you’ve done role-play with a GM, I figured that wouldn’t be an issue.
If any of these are new to you, enjoy!
I vote for Gloom, but then I wondered how I was referred to it, and thought I saw it on your show? Is there a neat little list somewhere of those you’ve played already? My elderly brain can’t remember the whole lot of them perfectly….
There’s a list here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabletop_(web_series) (includes the games played at International TableTop Day further down the page)
Thank you kind sir. I guessed I must have bought Gloom after seeing it on Tabletop; it’s where I get most of my referrals from!
You really need to play City of Horror, it’s perfect.
Seasons; excelent 4 player snappy game, use dice to see what kind of mana you get to cast your spells, be the most impressive wizard
Infiltration; feels Cyberpunk. get in, work together to get the paydata, be the one to survive with the most when you get out. fast easy lots of laughs when it all goes wrong.
7 Wonders; draft a civilization in 3 rounds. v fast
Aye, Dark Overlord; Story telling game of why the imps failed this time
Sentinels of the Muliverse: Cooperative deck building game fast and fun to play (I like Shadowrun: Crossfire more, but would take too long to explain/get rolling)
I hope some of these are of interest to you, was hard to edit down for time / ease of explanation. There are many games I’d love to see you play, but are probably not good for the format.
Look forward to more amazing shows
Epic Battle Wizards Battle at Mount Skullzfyre!! So campy and great. Boss Monster.. Quarriors.. Wiz-War.. Thunderstone.. Pixel Tactics.. Gloom.. Food Fight
Firstly many thanks for Tabletop – love the show & watch it with my kids. Some suggestions follow that are different to the above …
Cooperative games …
Escape: The Curse of the Temple
Flash Point Fire Rescue 2nd Edition
Forbidden Desert – it appears to be similar to Forbidden Island but mechanics are different. There are reported balance issues though.
If you’d like to do a Kids session (it could be fun watching Will play with a bunch of 5-8 year olds) …
Chicken Cha Cha Cha – Best kids game (more or less ever) as kids can compete with adults very easily.
Otherwise …
Puerto Rico
Bohnanza
Sheriff of Nottingham
Nothing Personal
Space Cadets Dice Duel (although that might be a little frantic for video)
Forbidden Desert (just to let Matt Leacock get his hat-trick of wins 😉 )
Among the Stars
Mice and Mystics
Cash and Guns (2nd edition)
Tales of the Arabian Nights
Oh and Dead of Winter
Another Ticket to Ride variant, possibly the Nordic Countries one.
King of New York
Fluxx board game, since Star Fluxx went so well.
Chinatown, it’s what Monopoly could’ve been had it been designed in this century.
Boss Monster!
Because I’m an old-school SJGamer….
Car Wars – (Obviously doing it in the 3-D version with Matchbox cars)
Castellan
Ogre 6 Ed. (unlikely, but there are a couple of four player scenarios)
Various versions of Munchkin like Munchkin Apocalypse.
DC Deck Building Game with the new Crisis Expansion…that way, everyone can win and that means Will can too!!!! (For a change)
The Marvel Legendary games are fun too, again co-op. I heard the new Legendary Encounters based on Alien is really good and tough!!!
Zombicide, Suburbia, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Cosmic Encounter….
However, my dream since episode of 1 of TableTop is Battlestar Galactica. Maybe you can do a Christmas Special, like Doctor Who, and get some of the cast to play!!! Or the Firefly game…having Fillion, and Tudyk and hell, shoot for the moon…Joss or Edlund!!!
Kingdom Builder from Queen Games. It’s a really cool game about building settlements and every game is different due to the changing parameters for scoring (gold). It earned a game of the year award 2012.
Cosmic Encounter would be ideal for the show.
Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension by Cryptozoic Entertainment because it has a nice gaming mechanism.
Cosmic Encounter by Fantasy Flight because it promotes interaction and playful argumentation.
Dominion by Rio Grande because as deck building games go, it is one of the best.
King of New York by Iello because the King of Tokyo episode was good.
Star Trek: Attack Wing by WizKids because miniature games are awesome.
wiz-war
zombiecide
Dead of Winter – I loved your video playing “Betrayal at house on the hill”, and this WILL be similarly great, if not better. And I’m so excited about that game!!!
Sheriff of Nottingham – might be the perfect game for Tabletop: about 60min of bluffing, bribing and laughing!
Dominion – because it’s a classic.
Port Royal – a 30min cardgame, one of my favorites atm…
If you do an episode with several short games (as you did with Zombie Dice, Get Bit!, and…forgot the 3rd, oops), a game I’ve been playing with my kids is…
Inn Fighting (Wizards of the Coast)
– easy to learn
– play time ranges from 15-30 minutes per session, depending on die rolls
– lots of luck with a little strategy (combination of some dice and cards)
– point leadership in the game can quickly shift around
– easy to “role play” the various characters as they brawl in an inn
– highly visual: most of the players’ cards and counters are always visible
– inexpensive for viewers to pick up their own copy (they just need to provide their own hitpoint/victory point counters, we use those “glass jewels” found in craft and dollar stores).
I know you’ve done follow-ups/sequels a couple of times (Ticket to Ride, Tsuro), so if you’re pressed for options, playing Castle Panic with the Wizard’s Tower expansion is tougher than the original alone with added monsters and mechanics.
The same publisher (Fireside Games?) also has a game called “Dead Panic” that supposedly has different mechanics and gameplay. Haven’t played that one myself yet, but others might be able to chime in on how well it would work for TableTop.
Another follow-up/sequel option…a Fluxx extravaganza…Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx, Monster Fluxx, Oz Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, Cthulu Fluxx, Eco Fluxx, Martian Fluxx (but not Star Fluxx, because you played that one already). Publisher: Looney Labs
– I’ve played Fluxx, Star Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, Pirate Fluxx, and Monster Fluxx myself.
– All are a lot of fun, all have different cards with different themes. For instance, Monster Fluxx makes fun of vampires, werewolves, mummies, and even Scooby Doo and the gang.
– Short play sessions, so several can be included in a single episode for variety.
My kids and I are really looking forward to season 3 of TableTop and new games to try out. Thanks to your show, my older kids are getting into tabletop games, and they ask me to play all the time now and ask to get the games they see on the show. Our collection has grown a lot over the past few months, in both number and variety of games.
Play more games!
dungeons and dragons 5th edition or Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay!
There’s a wonderful game called Citadels (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/478/citadels) that might work well.
Red dragon inn!!! Awesomey hillarious game!!
I’d love to see you play through a mission of Machine of Death (published by Machine of Death and Bearstache books I think). It’s a very different kind of game. Cooperative, with planning and then timed execution. And you can go absolutely crazy with fun ways to execute (pun intended) your plan.
Villainy – plays 4, has a theme you would love, and you can have a grizzly bear henchma you can have have a giant snake become Corporate CEO and then have it poo in a bag so your villain can leave it on the hero’s doorstep and light it on fire. Plenty of storytelling about why your giant snake has a phd and a club.
I would like to see you play Boss Monster. I really enjoy the game myself and maybe Tanto Cuore
cutthroat caverns
will make for a very entertaining show.
“Without Teamwork, You’ll Never Survive.
Without Betrayal, You’ll Never Win!”
Dwarven Miner – plays 4. Fun game with some neat mechanics. Plus Grant Wilson of Ghost Hunters fame is the artist for Rather Dashing Games, so built in guest for the show and ties in SyFy.
Hanabi
A Touch of Evil: Dark Gothic
A Study in Emerald (probably too complex, but I can wish)
Quarriors
Boss Monster
Panic Station
Dread
Baron Munchausen
Lunch Money
Conquest of Planet Earth
Tobago
