Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

I’d love to see Citadels. It’s great with four, plays fairly fast, and has beautiful art. The scheming and table banter is often fun.
I would have to recommend Zombicide by Guillotine Games. It is a cooperative game that involves running from zombies, fighting zombies, and completing objectives. The game hinges on the luck of the card draw the roll of dice.
I’d vote for Ghost Stories. It’s a great co-op game that I play regularly with my girlfriend who really likes it. It’s easy to learn, but the game is quite difficult to beat, which makes for a nice challenge.
For a competitive game, i’d go with Roborally, if you keep the map simple but interactive it’s good to do in 90 minutes.
I’m looking forward to the new season !
I agree, Zombicide is simple and fun.
Boss Monster
Kill Dr. Lucky
Lord of the Fries
Give Me the Brain
Stonehenge
Also: an episode based on the Cheapass Games available for free download at: http://www.cheapass.com/freegames/major would be awesome.
Sushi Go!
The Magic Labyrinth
Kittens in a Blender
Zooloretto
Kill Doctor Lucky
Unexploded Cow
Hey That’s My Fish
Seven Dragons
Scotland Yard
I’ll start off by saying I loved the Wil Wheaton Project and SyFy had better renew you!
I think Bang! would make a hysterical edition of Tabletop – the entendres just fly right and left.
Here’s a list of games I would love to see played.
Mice and Mystics
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Quantum
Camel Up
Tokaido
Guildhall
Dead of Winter
Marvel: Legendary
Really love the work you guys do on Tabletop and looking forward to season 3!
Red Dragon Inn. Villainous Vikings. Attack the Darkness.
Villany is a lot of fun. and I think would work well
“Puerto Rico” by Alea games (published in english by Rio Grande Games)
and its Cardgame offshot
“San Juan” are complex but with simple enough concepts to quickly learn and understand the game.
As far as I know “Puerto Rico” has just been re-published as an anniversary edition with some new (fanmade) game-elements.
Red Dragon Inn — a multiplayer game about what happens when an adventuring party meets up AFTER the dungeon crawl for a few quaffs of ale at the Red Dragon Inn. Simple to learn, fun to play … and a psychotic rabbit familiar to boot!
Ascension – can’t believe you guys haven’t tackled this one yet.
Discworld: Ankh-Moopork — a multiplayer game where players don’t know what the other player’s win conditon is. Would be really cool to see on Tabletop as I’d love to hear what each of the players was thinking during the game …
Eclipse is quite simply the best board game I’ve ever played, but I’m not sure it’s appropriate for TableTop because it takes quite a long time to play. Still, the design of the game is exquisite and it was very clearly well playtested before it was released.
I would really love to see Paranoia by Greg Costikyan played on tabletop, but I see that pen and paper rpgs do not really suit the format sigh would be fun though š
Letters from Whitechapel, and you are the Jack the Ripper!
Hi Wil, thanks for opening this suggestion thread.
So, here are the games I think you would enjoy playing and would fit your show :
–> Scotland Yard (coop, 1 vs all others) – 1983 Spiel des Jahres winner – About 60 minutes. Mister X tries to escape the Scotland Yard detectives in a London City setting; explains very quickly; graphically clear and easy to play; it would perfectly fit Tabletop as the audience would be able to see what Mister X does (which is normally partly hidden to other players). There is also a reimplementation, called Mister X.
–> Ruse and Bruise (semi-bluff card game) – about 30 minutes with 4 players. Place/combine face-down and face-up cards to collect objectives; explains in less than 5 minutes; 3-card hands; strategy (choose a card that works best for you) and luck (based on what players draw each turn); cards are clear and visually nice.
–> QuĆ©bec (worker placement game) – About 75 minutes with 4 players. Complete buildings in the Vieux-QuĆ©bec (Old-QuĆ©bec) while earning points; explains in about 5 minutes; beautiful board and clear symbols; strategy (choose your spot) and luck (based on the randomization of the board itself at the beginning of the game).
–> Tokaido (Antoine Bauza’s worker placement game) – Travel through Japan while earning points by stopping at various spots. Explains quickly, plays in less than 60 minutes, strategy-based (choosing your next spot) and luck-based (cards drawn on most spots). Beautiful art, clear symbols.
I’d like to see an Icehouse night. The games Treehouse, Zark City, Zendo, and Homeworlds all seem like good fits in regards to the criteria given here.
AIM TO MISBEHAVE!!! You must do Firefly the boardgame and try to get a couple Browncoat friends to play it with you. It’ll be your highest watched episode ever.
Cosmic encounter – The potentially hard part would people having special abilities the camera wouldn’t know about until played. but its all negotiation.the goal is to get your ships on five other people planets, each person starts with five plaets and five ships on each planet.
Cash and guns 2ed – just came out at gen con and another partyish / negotiation game where people point foam guns at each other trying to make other people drop out so you can keep the cash.
Quantum – this is probably the least random but is an awesome game and still has dice rolls and straight forward rules. Your dice are ships and you have to deploy your quantum cubes to planets. To do so the number on the planet need ships that add up to it. Like an 8 planet will need two fours or a five and a three or a six and a two. First to get all their cubes out wins. But wai there is combat!! When two opposing ships come in contact the battl and defense dice are rolled, both d6’s, and are added to the value of your ship, the lowest number is the winner. Destroy enough enemy ships and you can deploy a cube for free.
Alien frontiers – the first big kickstarter game. It again uses dice as ships but you get to roll them each round. Based an what you roll you can take the various actions around the board like a worker placement. There are alien tech cards to help you manipulate your rolls. Some of the actions need pairs, straights, hard 6’s, to be higher then a number already on the location or sometime they just need room on the action to be played. The goal oa to place your colonies on the planet and each area of the planet gives a special ability to whomever has control of the area. Points are given for each colony deployed and each area controlled. The first person to put down their last colony ends the game and points are totalled, most points win. I will say in one game I put my last colony out to end the game but didnt have the points to win. Great game.
Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity.
I think that these games with some really exciting guests could be a great experience.
Space Alert!!
Hi Wil, over on the Geek & Sundry forum we have this thread: http://geekandsundry.com/forums/discussion/14/games-youd-like-to-see
The first post in that thread contains links to a compiled list of all the suggestions people have made, the list currently contains 570 suggestions, 529 of which have not been played yet. I have no idea how many would be suitable, but it might be worth a look.
Letters from Whitechapel!
Sentinels of the multiverse. Great Co op. Comic book feel.
I love the idea of seeing some of the crew from Firefly playing some Firefly. The game can be explained pretty quickly and even though all the scenarios say approx 2 hrs, the two with a victory condition of “most cash” is very doable. You can also lower the limit to make the game quicker.
Boss Monster would be entertaining but feel it is a rather quick game and so you could companion it along with Coup. There was an expansion for Coup that came out at GenCon, though I’ve no idea what all it adds to the game.
I’m not sure how long this season will be filming, but if X-COM was released in time, I’d love to see that happen. In case you missed it at GenCon, it is a very intense timed game that supports 1 – 4 players and is a coop experience against the invading aliens.
The melee version of A Game of Thrones (LCG) would be really fun to watch, especially considering the high probability of deal making and back stabbing!
I also saw someone else recommend Rampage and I definitely vote for that as well!
So my list is:
X-COM
Game of Thrones
Firefly
Rampage
Boss Monster
Coup
For some reason my previous comment didn’t take. Here are a few suggestions:
-Key To The Kingdom. It’s a cult classic tabletop board game from the 90s, I’m not sure you guys have a copy to spare but this game has been seeing a renaissance of late (which thrills me no end) and I’d love so, so dearly to see it reprinted. Hint hint Andrew Hackard and Steve Jackson Games.
-Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. I’ve been playing the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game on which this is based (thanks to Tabletop btw) and I absolutely adore this game’s world, and would love to see either this on Tabletop or Pathfinder RPG be played for the RPG Show To Be Named Later.
-Scattergories. Doesn’t necessarily fit your criteria but I’d enjoy seeing it played again because I haven’t played it since I was a kid.
-Possibly a “Classic Favorites” show with games like Clue.
-Munchkin Pathfinder. I know, I know, you’ve already played Munchkin but I kinda want to see Munchkin Pathfinder be played before I pick it up for myself.
I’d love to see some older games mixed in, Scotland Yard hits most of your key points, and I think would be fun to watch.
Pillars of the Earth – you’re in 1300 AD and each player is a “master craftsman” helping to build a great cathedral. Worker Placement. Very pretty. Interesting money mechanic.
Master Thief – (if you can find it) basically a memory game where individuals choose 1 of 7 roles EACH turn, to be able to interact with the “jewelry box” (a beautiful, 3 layered, multi-drawer, spinning/flipping box) and retrieve as many precious gems as possible.
Killer Bunnies and the quest for the magic carrot. – super funny card game, harsh gameplay, and ultimately, even though the best strategy is gaining as many carrots as possible, it comes down to luck.
PrĆŖt a porter!
So much FUN! Also it’s super funny to be playing a fairly serious economic game where players are constantly talking about this season’s “collection”. Fashion designer Wil.
Sheriff of Nottingham!
Jamaica from Asmodee
Sheriff of Nottingham from Arcane Wonders
Cosmic Encounter from lots of people
Among the Stars from Artipia Games
Heros Wanted from Action Phase
Can’t wait for the next season Wil. Keep up the great work.
A revisit to Munchkin might be warranted if you use one of the different-genre expansions, such as super or zombie.
I’d love to see you do Give Me The Brain. Zombies are still popular.
Where is SyFy with that Sharknado board game? You could have whomever from SyFy makes the decision about picking up WWP come on and play it, if they release it in time.
Kittens in a Blender, Redshift Games/Closet Nerd Games.
It’s so much fun, quick to pick up. The art is adorable. The game theme is cute and twisted. I can just imagine the table banter that would arise from a game like this. Particularly because we’ve played it at our own Tabletop Club and it was a blast!
You should check out Bring Out Yer Dead. It’s headed for Kickstarter in October. They had it in the board game room at GenCon and it’s gonna be at Salt Lake Comic Con too.
The game is really fun!
http://www.facebook.com/BringOutYerDead
Please consider:
Space Alert – Players take the role of a ships crew that must defend it for 10 minutes against random incoming threats. The game is played in real time with a customizable audio track.
Galaxy Trucker – A game in two phases, first scramble against other players to build your space ship, then race against your competitors to see who can make the most profit.
Quarriors – Dice building game where you try to summon monsters attack and defend in order for them to survive to score victory points.
Jamaica
Would like to see you press your luck in Sheriff of Nottingham! You might win! Haha.
Sentinels of the Multiverse and Legendary
Secrets of the Lost Tomb: The Cooperative Pulp-Action Adventure Boardgame!
Here’s what it looks like: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/everythingepicgames/secrets-of-the-lost-tomb-the-cooperative-adventure
Would love to see either of these two games.
Oddville – I think it is safe to say this is my favourite game from my entire collection. It is a light worker placement and city construction game.
Safranito – The most unique board game in my collection, it combines dexterity and strategy to give the feel of really being present at a market. Players toss coins to buy spices but can bounce opponents’ coins out of the way similar to crokinole, You may not have the money to buy spices and can choose to sell off some of your holdings meaning there is a solid economic aspect to the game as well.
I would suggest Cutthroat Caverns or Student Bodies from Smirk and Dagger Games for some good backstabbing fun. Also Castle Dice, Belfort, or Kings of Air and Steam
Train. – http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/63933/train
I’m sure this is not likely to happen, but, I would definitely like to see the psychological reactions of the individuals playing this game.
Hi Wil,
I’m going to reiterate a few that have already been mentioned and maybe some that haven’t.
Galaxy Trucker, Jamaica, Robo Rally would all fit your criteria and work great for full episodes.
Sushi Go, Coup, Ghost Blitz could work in a multiple filler game episode.
And I think a real-time episode of Escape: The Curse of the Temple would be hilarious.
Love the show. Cheers!
I’ll just throw this on the pile. Probably won’t be seen. I’m sorry I didn’t get to see Wil at GenCon, but hey, I did see 2 games that might be good for TableTop that no one else seems to be talking about. They weren’t on the main floor, but they’re still good:
Volt – Kind of like a board game version of Robot Wars where you program you robot’s controller with dice (not random rolling, you choose the sides).
Livestock Uprising – It’s not out yet, but will be soon. It involves an escalation mechanic where buying new units allows you to gather new resources that allows you to buy new units. Then, at any time someone can gather their units together to voltron them into a single mega unit to start wrecking their opponents.
And, hey, if you want someone to 3D model some upgrades to add some style to the game, you know who to hit up.
Sheriff of Nottingham and Cosmic Encounter are pretty obvious choices.
Hi Wil!
Let me start off by saying I LOVE TableTop, and can’t wait for the new season. I have a couple of suggestions:
Letters from Whitechapel (Fantasy Flight Games): One player plays as Jack the Ripper, and the others play as police officers trying to find Jack. The mechanics are simple and easy to learn, but it is a pretty exciting and fun game. Maybe it says something about my character, but I love one-vs-all games… hehehe…
Power Grid (Rio Grande Games): This may not be luck-based enough for your show, but I still think it could be a fun game for you and your peeps. There is a lot of player interaction when bidding for power plants.
Coup (Indie Boards and Cards): This has already been mentioned a couple of times, so I will not elaborate other than to say HELLZ YEAH include this shiznet out of this…
I can’t wait for the new season! And if you are looking for more people to appear on the show… Feel free to give me a call… HAH š
Sheriff of Nottingham for sure.
I’d love to see you play a classic, like Trivial Pursuit. Maybe the Star Wars edition. š
Superfight – http://www.superfightgame.com – funny apples to apples type game
Donkey Kong Jenga – get to the top and save the princess before the tower collapses!
Adventures – The Pyramid of Horus – search for treasure while the pyramid collapses around you!
Family Business – play as a famous mob family and put contracts out on opponents to be the last family standing!
Run for Your Life Candyman, using real gingerbread cookies instead of the paper hitpoint sheets. A lot of luck with some easy to grasp strategy. Essentially an adult version of the kids game Candyland.
Sherriff of Nottingham. Great negotation, bluffing game. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/157969/sheriff-nottingham
Cash N Guns, Sheriff of Nottingham, Jamaica
I second Cosmic Encounter – the number of group win possibilities make the amount of negotiation and backstabbing in the game awasome.
The Downfall of Pompeii
Survive:Escape From Atlantis
Both games fit all of your criteria, can be cutthroat and have great player interaction.
Pompeii — You can throw other player’s meeples into Mt. Vesuvius.
Survive — You can knock other players off the lifeboats into shark/serpent/squid infested waters.
