Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Check out “GUBS: A Game of Wit and Luck.”
It hits all your criteria perfectly. Great for 4 players, plays in 20 minutes, explained in less than 5 and has tons of really amusing luck with enough strategy to keep it interesting. Its a ‘take that’ game, so we always get a lot of laughs.
Here’s the page:

Love the show! 🙂
Any of the Smirk and Dagger games, really.
Steam Park
Hanabi
Stone Age
Splendor
Suburbia
Assassins Creed Arena
Zooloretto
Galaxy Trucker
Trains! (I forgot to say this one)
Survive! has always been one of my favorites and been playing it since the original ’82 Parker Brothers version. …and it fits all your criteria! 🙂
Show GUBS!!! 😀
Spartacus is a tad longer, but can be shortened into that time frame. It is a great game with some SUPER cool mechanics.
Doctor Who card game.
I know you have played Pandemic, but you have not played any of its expansions. The one that makes one of the players a Bio Terrorist is CRAZY fun!
Libertalia
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/125618/libertalia
I would like to see Discworld: Ankh-Morpork.
I played it at PAXPrime 2013, and had to buy it!
I love the art (so visually pleasing), and I like that not everyone is going towards the same goal! It makes the game different each time you play. Unlike Catan where as a player, you generally have the same beginning strategy, Discworld forces you to change your strategy based on what your win condition is (drawn at the beginning of the game). It keeps people on their toes!
It’s a must for Terry Pratchet fans as they will ‘get’ many of the games references to the novels. If you’re like me and have never read the novels (I’ll start soon…I promise!), the game is still beautiful, fun and comical!
Rumble in the Dungeon from Flatlined Games
You’d mentioned doing an episode with kids. Rumble in the Dungeon is a competitive bluffing and guessing game with a modular board for 2 – 6 players. Each player has two secret characters, randomly chosen from a pool, and tries to secure the treasure or be the last person with a character left standing. It plays in about 10 to 15 minutes with 4 players, and it’s the easiest game I’ve ever taught. I’ve seen kids as young as three learn it pretty easily. Kids love building the board each game, and their reactions when one of their characters gets taken out are often hilarious.
+1 to Rumble In The Dungeon. Or also its “brother” Rumble In The House.
I’d love to see you get a larger group and play One Night Ultimate Werewolf.
Sheriff of Nottingham would be perfect for Tabletop.
I recommend ‘BANG’, and while you have already done a flux game, i think it would cool for you guys to play “monty python flux”. Watching everyone speaking in an outrageous accent and singing silly songs would be fun.
Mage Wars.
Zombicide! I think you said you were going to do a Cards Against Humanity as a (filthy filthy) side episode, or something. I’d like to be considered to play in that game, please. Pathfinder Card Game? Go super old school, Crossbows and Catapults or Fireball Island or Dark Tower.
I think Zombicide would film really well. People may be over zombie games which is understandable but I have really been enjoying this one a lot and if nothing else it was a spectacularly successful kickstarter. Easily plays in under 90 minutes has tons of minis and the card / board art is fantastic. Super simple rules.
Would love to see at least one civilization game. While I love Sid Meier’s Civilization it is way too long as is Nations. You could do Clash of Cultures though. That plays quickly if all the players have a good knowledge of the game play.
While not playable in 90 minutes, if you can manage to gather cast members of Firefly together to play Firefly: The Game (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/138161/firefly-game), the Internet will explode.
I now want to see this more than anything.
Especially if everyone played someone -not- their character. Mal as Kaylee would be hilarious. 😀
Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mount Skullzfyre!
http://www.cryptozoic.com/games/epic-spell-wars-battle-wizards-duel-mt-skullzfyre
My family shortens it to “Battle Wizards”. Simple gameplay, lots of ways to strategize, and everyone has a great time smiting their enemies.
Self-Serving Answer: Belle of the Ball!
Actual Answer: Camel Up hits all your bullet points.
Run for your Life Candy Man (with real cookies obviously).
jamaica
Cutthroat Caverns
Boss Monster, Robinson Crusoe, Imperial Settlers, Tavern Brawl, Gothic Doctor, The Outlaws.
7 Wonders
Acquire
Alien Frontiers
Bohnanza
Coloretto
Coup
Dominion
Loch Ness
Loot
RA
ZOMBIES!!!
You can do an episode similar to the 3 mini game episode (Zombie Dice, Tsuro, & Get Bit). What about something like Escape: The Curse of the Temple, Coup, & One Night Ultimate Werewolf.
Also what about a game like Tokaido, the new game Samurai Spirit, or Firefly: The Game (with some of the cast from Firefly).
Panic Station. I think the bluffing and hidden enemy mechanic would play really well.
Boss Monster!
Pirate’s Cove: A pirate game about improving your pirate ship, sailing to islands, getting parrots, and plundering booty
Scalawag! A pirate game where everyone has the same cards but one where you can lie about what you play.
Tobago: A treasure hunting game, where the players determine the treasures’ locations!
Definitely “Libertalia” and maybe “Darkest Night”.
X-MACHINA (Blood & Cardstock Games).
Plays well with 4 people – CHECK
Plays in under 90 minutes – CHECK
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes – CHECK
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game – CHECK (the players make inventions to satisfy the customer’s gadgets’ wishes out of improbable cogs)
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well – CHECK (great retro-look design, 300 illustrated cards)
6 . Is not something we’ve played before – CHECK
Isla Dorada – stunning game. Big pieces, which make it easy to see what is going on.
Dice town – Theme and dice rolling.
The Adventurers of Chac – Indiana Jones style game.
Dead of Winter – already promising to be a hit game.
Do an extra long double episode special where you go through a game of Arkham Horror or Eldritch Horror.
On a more serious suggestion note, Dr. Mcninja’s legndary Showdown. I would suggest Netrunner, but that is only 2 player.
Quantum
Kingdom Builder
Kings of Air and Steam
Guild Hall
Cheaty Mages (though usually pretty quick)
Flapjacks and Sasquatches: http://www.flapjacksandsasquatches.com/
Redneck Life: http://www.gutbustingames.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1
I got to playtest RL, and it’s HILARIOUS. I actually broke it by going through every single car available, and being so in debt by the end that they ran out of Check’n’Scrams. I think he subsequently tweaked it, cuz we’ve played the official version and it hasn’t happened since. 😉 They also changed the names, cuz I can’t marry Uncle Bubba anymore. (“The kids called me Auntie Momma!”)

*it is a goal-oriented deckbuilding game from Clever Mojo Games
Libertalia by Asmodee, 7 Wonders (with Leaders expansion including your Leader promo card) by Asmodee, Seventh Hero by AEG, Desperados of Dice Town by Asmodee, Kingsburg by Fantasy Flight, Eldritch Horror by Fantasy Flight as your follow up to Elder Sign. All look great, easy to learn, play fast, and are fun to play.
Bounty: A Game of Treasure on the High Seas (https://www.facebook.com/Bountygame/info)
Successfully brought to life via Kickstarter, this casual card game is an excellent blend of strategy and luck. As competing Admirals, each player is trying to win the game by stockpiling the most gold. Sounds simple enough, but one has to balance locking in your loot versus the threat of having your ships sunk by the other Admirals. At the same time, all players draw their action cards from a communal draw pile, so luck of the draw must also be on your side to succeed!
Plays under 60 minutes, and best with four people.
Pictures here: (https://www.facebook.com/Bountygame/photos_stream?tab=photos_stream)
This game was designed to compliment a table top gaming collection, so instead of giving the owner another pile of wooden or plastic bits, you are encouraged to make the experience your own by using pieces from your existing game collection to serve as the “gold.”
Even if it doesn’t make the cut for the show, I highly recommend checking it out just as a legitimately fun game to play!
My $0.02:
Ghost Stories
Pathfinder Card Game
Mexica
Cutthroat Caverns
Discworld: Ankh-Morpork
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Cosmic Encounter
Geist
The Bridges of Shangri-La
Dungeon World: Creative Commons released RPG.
Modern Art – It’s not about the art, it’s about bidding and the market.
See if you can get Star Wars Armada from Fantasy Flight
GUBS by Gamewright! 2-6 Players. Great fun, quick to play, and surprisingly deep. Super easy to learn, too. My buds and I played it at PAX one year and we bring it everywhere now.
Ca$h & Gun$ is very visually compelling and socially dynamic
If I would have to pick only one, then Eldritch Horror. Since, I can not afford to buy that game myself, I would like to see how you guys play it and, when I have some extra money, I will know whetter it is worth buying or not.
GUBS fits perfectly into this set of criteria, also: is fun.
A few suggestions, all from Dice Hate Me Games (dicehatemegames.com)
Brewcrafters
I haven’t played this one yet, but thematically it sounds right up your alley.
Compounded
Players compete to collect atoms and complete compounds. An ongoing Kickstarter (just a few days left) will introduce radioactive elements and compounds. It’s smart, and a lot more fun than the theme might suggest.
Belle of the Ball
I haven’t played this one yet, but I’m eagerly expecting it in the mail very soon. Players choose wacky-named guests to try to have the best party in the land.
The Great Heartland Hauling co.
Players move trucks around picking up and dropping off supplies like corn, beef, soybeans, and pork. More fun than I can make it sound.
I will second all of these suggestions, especially Compounded:
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/118174/compounded
Also seconded, especially Brewcrafters. A game about craft breweries? C’mon! You’d love it, Wil.
I would love to see Axis and Allies by the Milton Bradley company.
The game would look great on the screen with the big color map, and the individual tanks, planes, and ships. And how long would really take to explain that you are fighting WW2 all over.
It calls for up to five players, so you could splurge and have five guests on, or someone, namely you could play two countries.
I’ve played numerous games and none ever went over an hour or so, hell, depending on the players some didn’t last more than 30 minutes.
I remember the episode you did with the game where you were fighting Nazis while trying to get mythical treasures. Axis and Allies would give you plenty of opportunities to try out you Nazi villain voice again!
Axis & Allies for the next season of Table Top!
Robo Rally gets my vote. It’s quite customizable as to length of game, and I think pretty easy to explain. And what’s not to love about mostly-under-control robots, lasers, and dangerous pits in the floor?
Serpent’s Tongue! 🙂 that’s fun to watch, even when I don’t get to play it.
Red Dragon Inn, a neat drinking game or Libertalia a fun pirate card game. How about I show with dexterity games like Coconuts or Tumbln’ Dice?
Incan Gold. Pathfinder Card Game. Alhambra.
Survive: Escape from Atlantis.
Seeing your opponent gets attacked by sea monsters – without them feeling directly victimised or bullied – could be so much fun!
Nexus Ops.
A light, retro looking, sci-fi war game. …and also, the components goes fluorescent under black light! x)
Dead of Winter.
Cosmic Encounter.
