Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Empire Builder, Iron Dragon, Euro Rails, Rail Baron, Air Baron… or even Star Trek the Game. Just to name a few…
Libertalia from Asmodee. It’s a simultaneous role-selection game with lots of piratey flavor.
Euphoria from Stonemaier Games. This is among my favorite games that I haven’t gotten enough of yet. It’s a worker placement game, similar to Lords of Waterdeep, but it’s a bit more complex. It’s fun, and kept my friends and I guessing as to who might win. And hey, who doesn’t want to build a better distopia?
Machine of Death from Bearstache Books (I think). This is a great storytelling team game, with a great concept. The game grew out of a pair of anthologies (also titled Machine of Death) looking at the same concept – a machine can predict how you’ll die. The game starts with a great continuation – you and your friends are a team of assassins. Does your target know how they’ll die, and attempt to thwart you? How can you ensure that the target dies…from “french press?” (coffeemaker? Gallic wrestler? Parisian newspaper?). This is just a lot of fun, and a great way to determine if your team has enough creativity to work in a world with the Machine of Death.
Invasion from Outer Space from Flying Frog. It’s pretty much exactly the same mechanics as Last Night on Earth (and they can be combined), but this features martians…and the circus. Jojo the Dancing Bear is a highlight when we play with friends, and I would love to see how your game turns out!
Dungeon Roll from Tasty Minstrel Games. I’ve only played this 3-player, but it’s simple enough to add a 4th. It’s a pleasant way to pass the time, and I think you and your guests could have a lot of fun with it. If you do any 2-player games this season, this is a great one – both players are consistently engaged.
Pastiche from Gryphon Games. I love this game. It’s fun, competitive, and fairly straightforward: lay tiles, collect paint, mix colors, recreate the works of great masters, collect pairs of artists’ paintings and try to block your opponents from getting pairs. For anyone with a formal art background or an interest in art history, this is a really great game, and it can appeal to players who are, perhaps, more reluctant to play a board game.
Belle of the Ball by Dice Hate Me Games
‘Eclipse’ would be amazing to see but you may need a bigger table…
I suggest Villainous Vikings! It’s an awesome cross breed board game, it has some wicked art and is great for multiple players! Plus i mean who wouldn’t want to drink and pillage after a long day of work? haha do it Will!
I have 3 suggestions:
1) Heroes Wanted – A great game by ActionPhase. Mix and match super hero powers and fight silly bad guys. The great hero combos (in addition to the QUIRKS!) would be awesome to see some of the guests play with! Game looks and plays GREAT! It was also the surprise hit of Gen Con and was at the top of the BGG hot list for quite a while!
2) Machi Koro – My wife’s favorite game. Great fun, easy to explain, looks awesome.
3) Relic Expedition – My daughter’s favorite game. Explore and collect relics and fend off wild animals. It’s a beautiful production, easy and fun to play.
Since the suggestion thread on G&S has been mentioned, I updated my tally of it with the last two pages of mentions.
List is sorted by number of mentions, games already played get a check mark, games shown on Tabletop Day are in [] and games already mentioned as not suitable are marked with (-). All games mentioned twice or more have a link to BGG (only in the pdf version, as they get lost when copying to Google Docs).
It’s now over 600 games, but the most mentioned favorites are easy to spot: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhN55xNe6PlhdHJxTzNTUXg4aEQ4N2ZKYkM2SFFJVEE
Any plans on updating this – I love this as a way to find out some popular new games?
Do a B&W episode with an old school game. Maybe play it in some way with a new rule or two that most of us aren’t familiar with.
Ladies and Gentlemen!
i second Ladies and Gentleman!
would love to see the team dynamic on tabletop.
Our gaming group has really been digging Mansions of Madness lately. Thematically it’s a lot like Arkham Horror, but I’d say it’s a lot easier to learn and explain. Plus the storytelling aspect of it could really play well depending on the group of you have.
Gubs. That is all
1) Apocalypse World or any of its derivatives. I particularly like MonsterHearts and think you could get some cool guests for that. Dungeon World is also fun. I think it’d be a good fit for the show even though it’d be a bit long (possibly 2-part episode) because it presents a different dynamic for the GM from a traditional pnp game. The GM doesn’t have any more idea what’s going on than the players do.
2) Zombicide by Guillotine Games is terrific, and plays pretty fast – especially if you cut out the set-up portion. It plays up to 6 players. It’s pretty similar to Last Night on Earth, but I think the survivors seem tougher and more ass-kicking. (That didn’t save us from all dying in one really bad turn just barely in sight of our goal when we played the other day…)
3) I’d love to see you bust out an old classic like SJG’s Illuminati (or the INWO boxed set, I suppose). But it’s dinosaur-like in its age.
4) If you were to do another show with multiple short games, then something with Looney Labs’ martian pyramids would be fun. 4b) And, for that matter, Chrononauts would be AWESOME. It plays 4 and is really interesting.
5) Ergo, the card game from Catalyst Game Labs blew my mind. It plays exactly four, and your production team would probably have a lot of fun doing animated flowcharts to explain what’s going on.
Quantum
I love Quantum, but I don’t think that it hits the right Luck to Strategy ratio.
Game of Thrones (2nd Ed.) By Fantasy Flight.
Ten rounds, beautiful, with a very cool power mechanic that allows for bluffing and distribution of intrigue… it’s not a luck based game though, but assumptions and bluffs can swing the game, so social introduces the chaos element.
1775: Rebellion would be fantastic for the show.
Compounded by Dice Hate Me Games. The theme is fantastic and it strikes a good balance between luck and strategy as well as interaction with other players through trading.
City Council!
it looks great, has great humor built into the game, and plays well with 4 people.
the drawing two new objective each round also adds to the randomness of the game.
Judge Dredd boardgame for some real old school stuff!
…also, Alien Frontiers, Galaxy Trucker, Euphoria, Cosmic Encounter, Genoa, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Steam, Trains, and Kemet. If any two of these are played I’ll consider it the best season you’ve had!
Scotland Yard
Freedom the underground Railroad. http://academygames.com/games/freedom-series/freedom-the-underground-railroad
Flash Point Fire Rescue with the Extreme danger expansion,by Indie Boards and Cards, co-op game for aspiring Firefighters and rescue personal out there, pick one of 6 possible rolls as a Firefighter and work together to rescue all the helpless victims in the burning/exploding/haz mat spilling building, and get it done before the building collapses.
Mice and Mystics by Plaid Hat games, story based game where the heroes you play have been magically changed into mice who must now fight through rats, roaches, centipedes and spiders to reverse the magic spell and change back to rescue the kingdom. Chapter based adventure in 90 min blocks.
A racing game like RallyMan! by RallyMan or Thunder Alley by GMT or a worker placement racing game like Alien Frontiers by Clever Mojo
cosmic encounter (only flares + reward deck no tech/hazard etc)
merchants and marauders
kemet
run, fight, or die
isla dorada
galaxy trucker
robo rally

Counicl of Verona by Crash Games
I’d really love to see Robo Rally on Table Top. It’s very modular so an entertaining game could easily be played with 4 players in 90 minutes. The boards and bots are interesting and watching everyone do the “Robo Rally Rumba” (when figuring out which direction you are going to end up) can’t help but be fun to watch.
I think sky traders could be a good one for your show
Gravwell – Super simple and fun take that kind of game. I recently played it with a kid that had to be younger than 10, and he won!
City of Horror – I know you already played LNOE, but this focuses less on the zombie theme and more on negotiation and voting. Might run a little long depending on the players but watching people bicker back and forth would be entertaining.
One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Coup, Mascarade, Saboteur – I could go on, there are tons of social deduction games that you haven’t played that you can do on your show. You could probably play 3 in one episode.
Cosmic Encounter – I know you said this one isn’t possible, but I refuse to believe it. It can work. MAKE IT WORK! This game would be so much fun to watch. I never get tired of this game when I play it and the variety of alien powers is ridiculous.
Mars Attacks!
Dreadball Ultimate
Floodgate Games: “Epic Resort” or “Legacy: Gears of Time”!
Macho Koro!

Happy playing!

Dominion, chrononauts, race for the galaxy! Keep up the awesome work! Love it
Wrath of Ashardalon!
Home Stretch by R&R Games
This might suit one of your “quick game” type of shows. One of the Fluxx card games. I have Cthulhu Fluxx and think it’s great, but really any of them can be explained in 5 minutes and can handle 4 players.
