What would you like to see us play on Tabletop Season Three?

Anonymous asked:

Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.

So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.

We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.

Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.

What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?

Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:

  1. Plays well with 4 people.
  2. Plays in under 90 minutes.

  3. Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.

  4. Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.

  5. Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.

  6. Is not something we’ve played before.

I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

I think anything in the main arkham horror games would be cool to see. Including mansion of madness.., although the rules would be a bit hard to explain in 5 minutes but a ‘dragon age’ approach to arkham horror would be awesome. However boss monster, zombicide, dungeon lord, a touch of evil might be quicker and more table top friendly. Also, maybe a newer game, like shadows of brimstone would be interesting to watch…

Any of the dungeons and dragons boardgames. Castle Ravenloft is my favourite. Plenty of minis, cutdown rules for fast play. Has a great atmosphere and its coop so you could introduce a vip award for outstanding playing in the face of unspeakable horrors. Very important player.

I have a great game for table top season 3. Its super easy to teach because it only runs on 3-4 actions, plays 4 (or more) people under 90 minutes, art is really great and kid friendly, and best part is you probably haven’t played it because it was only made last year via a very successful Kickstarter based locally here in Los Angeles. Its called What The Food?! and the premise is everyone chooses characters to take part is a food fight at school. Very basic actions to start – throw food, pick up more food, duck, and whatever your characters special move is. But the trick is everyone has to lay out their actions (face down) in advance on the turn, bringing strategy and luck into guessing what you think your target is going to do. Different foods and conditions can be combined for extra affect.

    Zombicide wolud be awesome.
Often the game lasts longer than 90 minutes although beginners usually don’t last that long šŸ˜€

The great thing about it is everyone wins or loses together. That said I guarantee you’ll have so much fun losing your first game that you’ll be a regular Z-cide player in no time. I won’t be surprised if you made separate episodes for the extensions in seasons to come šŸ˜‰

2 characters per player would be cool so that players don’t get eliminated even if their first character does. (Alternatively you could use the Zombivor rules)

    Let the zombie mayhem begin!

REALLY looking forward to Season 3! If you could make the games selection as cheap as possible as I have purchased mearly all the games fro the previous 2 seasons [bar Fortune and Glory and Betrayal House on the Hill!] Thanks šŸ™‚
    I would love to see:
    Forbidden Desert – Gamewright
    Dead Panic – Fireside
    Cosmic Encounter – FF
King of New York – Iello
    Ghost Stories – Asmodee
    Galaxy Trucker – Vlaada Chvatil
    Tash Kalar – Z-man
    Ladies & Gentlemen – Libellud

    Four games come to mind:

    1) Galaxy trucker, it seems to be the perfect fit fore this show. It’s very easy to grasp the basics, plays in 60-90 minutes, plenty of luck and most of all it hilarious both to play and to watch

    2) Dungeon pets, by same designer as above mentioned game. Strategy game where you raise cute fantasy creatures and try to take care of them as they fill their cages with poo and try to break out. šŸ˜€

    3) Dead of Winter, lots of zombies, mistrust and the need to coorperate, all at the same time! Would be great on the show.

    4) Thunder alley, if you wan’t to do another racing game on the show, this game should be it. Each player controls a team of cars and players can (and are often forced to) help help each other by forming long draft lines of cars. Brilliant.

Revolution! (2009) by Steve Jackson Games. http://bgg.cc/boardgame/34887/revolution

It’s best with 4 players, and the players’ reactions when the screens are removed will make for some great TV.

    Seconding Cosmic Encounter.

I’d love to see you all do a mini adventure for D&D 5e or even better, Star Wars: Edge of the Empire (love that system!). As much as I love Tales of the Arabian Nights and the Firefly board game, both of those can stretch on for hours.

That said, I feel it is your duty as a nerd icon to play the Firefly board game regardless of length!

Also, can you get Cory Doctorow to come play with you if he’s in the states during filming? The two of you are some of my favorite people on the planet.

Dead of Winter, by Plaid Hat Games

It’s a semi-cooperative game with some pretty cinematic moments that would film well, and player interaction based around secret secondary objectives and general distrust. It seems like the perfect filmable game, really.

I would love to see an episode dedicated to kids games. We have a 4 year old (and an 18 month old) that loves to play games. Current favorites are “Feed the Kitty” and “Chickyboom” but we are always on the look out for new games for the 10 and under crowd. p.s. Logan (the man child) loves watching “the show with the guy that plays games and has hair on his face” aka Tabletop.

This is a great idea. Also, Wil could bring his friend John Kovalic back for another episode. John has a “Daughter, Age 5” as he puts it and did a blog post of his own on kids games.

Sheriff of Nottingham, Libertalia, and Ghost Stories are musts for Tabletop. I’d also recommend Pressure Cooker, Space Cadets, and Ca$h ‘n Gun$. Guilty pleasures: The Manhattan Project, Battle Merchants, Istanbul, and Camel Up.

Resident Evil DBG – by Bandai Its a cool fast paced game, there is always a luck factor when going into the mansion to fight agaisnt the monster,is easy to explain, set up and learn, its up to 4 players and quite cheap, a DBG would be a nice addition to TableTop

My vote goes towards Quantum the new area control game with dice, or City of Iron the beautiful euro game. Both meet all of your criteria. Can’t wait to see the new season.

  28. Dave DuJOur says:
    28 August, 2014 at 6:57 am

Tiny Epic Kingdoms is a nice micro-sized 4X game that looks very interesting. Similarly, Tiny Epic Defenders is a micro tower defense game. Both pack a lot of game play into very small boxes.

Space Alert! is a great real-time coop that takes all of 10 minutes to play, plus ~5-10 more minutes to resolve. Imagine a combination of Roborally + Artemis as a co-op. The full rules set seems very complicated (we’ve never got to it before), but several of the “training” missions have plenty of rules in them. At 10-15 minutes or so it would be pretty easy to play 2-3 scenarios in a single TableTop episode.

I see Illuminati is back on the shelves. I haven’t played that in years (decades?) but it would be a different type of card game than has been on TableTop.

Has Dixit been on TableTop yet? I can’t remember anymore but it would be a great group party game for many of the creative & imaginative people you get on the show.

Hex Hex: Sure it’s a variation of hot potato but it always brings laughs to my groups when we play it.

I know you have X-Wing Miniatures on already, but you could do Star Trek Attack Wing too. Yes, it similar (almost the same) mechanic, but there’s a much wider variety of ships & factions. Also every expansion ship comes with a scenario in addition to all of the organized play scenarios that have been produced for a year. While that would take extra prep-time to generate the fleets, it is still a great game. (Similarly Dungeons & Dragon Attack Wing has just been released by WizKidz.)

Space Dealer is an interesting building/trading game while flying your ship to adjacent players to collect resources. But the timing your actions are controlled by sand timers, so there’s a lot of “flip the timer, move it to the new spot, do the action, hope someone didn’t take that resource first” chaos going on. I think it would be GREAT just to watch. It’s a ton of fun to play (even if I suck at it).

Roborally. Yes, it can easily extend well past 90 minutes, but pick a smaller/easier board & fewer flags (3 probably) and it works just fine.

Hi Wil! I would love to see you play on TableTop any of the following titles, they will fit your requirements nicely!

Last Will. — RioGrande Games (Try to spend as much money as possible to gain a large inheritance from your uncle)
Fresco — Queen Games (play with the included 3 Expansions in the base game, restoring the fresco of the Cathedral Ceiling)
“I say Holmes…” — Victory Point Games (solve cases by catching the criminal mastermind, in Victorian England)
Amerigo — Queen Games (Explore the islands as Vespucci Amerigo has done)
Sultaniya — BombayX (players compete building the Sultans greatest palace, by laying tiles to complete the task)
Bruxelles:1893 — Z-Man Games (Make a name for yourself as the finest Art Nuveaux builder)
Indigo — Ravensburger (similar to Tsuro but collecting gems by laying path tiles)
Spyrium — Asmodee (Harvesting a new source of power called Spyrium by placing workers between a board made of different cards, to gain the card for riches)
Helios — Z-Man Games ( Terraform your world for resources and temples while the sun revolves around your planet)
Istanbul — Pegasus Speil (players are a merchant sending his associates to deal in exotic fruit, fabrics and jewelry in the marketplace to be the first to collect 5 gems)

Any one or more of these titles will fit into your timeframe, number of players, and the artwork is very good. Last

I vote for Escape from Atlantis. My siblings and I grew up playing it, and loved the game! Four players, and the island sinks underneath you, throwing monsters out to eat your players, whom you are trying to get safely away to islands in the corners of the map.

Hm … I think Run, Fight or Die would be a good choice. Or one of my favorites, Ghost Stories. Cutthroat Caverns is great but not very beautiful to look at. Galactic Strike Force is also a great game but the cards are too small written I think

I would like to suggest ‘Room Party’. The only possible difficulty could be in the length of the game. Our games of Room Party usually run long, but we’re busy making up a story as we go along with it. If played less seriously, it could be fun and quick like ‘Chez Geek’.

Quarriors! http://wizkidsgames.com/quarriors/ It’s pretty dang awesome – looks beautiful, well made, 130+ dice involved, and tons of GLORY. šŸ™‚ I hesitate to suggest it, thinking surely Tabletop has already covered this one, cool as it is – but it’s not turning up in my search, so maybe not? Such a fun game. Lots of dice rolling luck involved, but room for careful play, too. Found this gem on thinkgeek.com.

If Scifi doesn’t pick the show up for a 2nd season/2nd cycle, you should just do a kickstarter to fund a web based series. I don’t think there’s another host/writer in pop-culture that has a more intelligent and passionate fan base than you!

It’s a little heavier on the strategy, but it’s a really unique, simple to understand game in which the tension builds steadily as you push further up the mountain.
