What would you like to see us play on Tabletop Season Three?

Posted on 25 August, 2014 By Wil

Anonymous asked:

Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.

So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.

We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.

Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.

What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?

Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:

  1. Plays well with 4 people.
  2. Plays in under 90 minutes.

  3. Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.

  4. Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.

  5. Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.

  6. Is not something we’ve played before.

I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Alien Frontiers by Clever Mojo Games. Who does not want to watch Wil play a dice game since we know dice hate him. It’s a also a fun game, easy to explain and grasp.

RoboRally – Who does not enjoy watching people curse as they realize they turned the wrong way or had someone push them off course.

    You should play “Dominion”

I had a game night recently with a lot of great mates, with loads of different types of board games (Including quite a few that have been on your show, so thanks for that :D)
Playing Dominion for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. But I found it one of the best gaming experiences that I have had.

It’s fun, complex and a great introduction to Deck Building type of games.

    Love the show

I agree. I would have nominated it myself if I wasn’t sure someone else would. Here here!

One Night Ultimate Werewolf! It fits the show’s format so well and it’s SUCH a great game. You’d have time to play a few rounds of it, which is the best way to play.

Actually, I was thinking something similar.. I thought of the ‘Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow’ version.. Unfortunately it’s a game that plays best with a lot of people. I usually play with about 10 – 15 people… Unless they did it as a special and get enough people on board, I’m not sure if it’s going to have a shot at being on Tabletop..

That’s my two cents anyway.. I could very well be wrong. :3

    Dead of Winter
    Some Zombicide Scenario

I think Firefly would be cool, but it tends to play longer than 90 minutes (depending on the rules you use).

Maybe one of the Resident Evil Deck Building Games say first to X trophies and make the “enter the mansion” phase mandatory.

If you want to do some “retro” game, maybe Scotland Yard or Fireball Island if you can dig up a copy…

I also just though of Mad Quao by Wiggity Bang. probably plays better with more players, so if you can squeeze a fifth player in like you did for Resistance.

It is not very well known yet but it was my favorite game of Gen Con and it really needs to get some good exposure. It may look odd at first having no words on the cards and only art, but it is a gorgeous game works great with 4 players. That is Ortus Regni. http://www.Ortusregni.com Even if you do not play it on the show give it a try. Think medieval magic the gathering. Where you are all trying to take over early medieval england. With cards that look like they were pulled right off old tapestries. Gorgeous game fun to play and great looking components.

The classic 1981 The Dark Tower. having to do some gfx would be worth listening to wand watching it spin on each players turn.

Nuclear War! by Flying Buffalo games, hilarious. The original is olf, but they just released more stuff in 2014, so i am hoping the production quality would be suitable for filming.

Mayfair recently released Ankh-Morpork, a Disc World game. It fits your criteria. My group played it recently and it took about an hour after reading the rules. It made us chuckle, even those of us who haven’t read the novels.

    DnDizzle: Dragons in the Hood.

It’s an RPG, but it’s specifically a pocket RPG, meant to be able to explained and played on the fly.

It’s an 80-90’s hip hop parody of table top fantasy role playing

I’d love to see you guys play Jamaica, published by Game Works. It’s a beautiful, pirate-themed race game that plays in under an hour. Also Cosmic Encounter, published by Fantasy Flight. It’s an alien space conquest game with shifting alliances and unique alien abilities. Also, Galaxy Trucker, published by Rio Grande Games. It’s a chaotic, build a space freighter that will be blown to smithereens once game play starts game that I think would film great since it has a real-time element most games don’t.

Sentinels of the Multiverse and Ghost Stories… although with Wil’s luck, an episode based on Ghost Stories might last five minutes.

for an extended episode, I’d still like to see Arkham Horror, but I know with the format of the show and the complexity of the rules that is probably impossible.

Can’t wait for the new season to kick off – backed the IGG campaign (twice!! once for lootcrate) without hesitation. Even though I’m not a huge fan of some of the games played and I think that TableTop could use a few less guests who are clueless with games, I am fully supportive of the show and think it’s a great advertisement for the hobby, and entertaining to boot!

Some games that I think might work nicely in season three:

Machi Koro – The game is ridiculously easy to explain and play, and has lots and lots of hilarious moments and drama, especially late in the game when people have built up massive coin-generating/stealing engines

Coup/Love Letter/One Night Ultimate Werewolf – quick fillers that are a lot of fun

Istanbul – this years KSdJ winner is elegant and fun – and looks pretty on the table too.

K2 – mountain-climbing race game. Climb up! Climb down! Try not to die from exposure! Fun for all.

Tobago – One of my favourites. Gorgeous components, lovely treasure-dividing mechanic, chance of flesh-eating pirate cursed treasures. Perfect!

Pirate’s Cove by Days of Wonder. This was the game that got me into “real” board games. It’s gorgeous to look at, simple to learn, and doesn’t take too long to play. Most importantly though? YOU’RE A PIRATE. You upgrade your ship, battle for booty (teehee) and fight to be the most famous pirate on the seas. I’d love to see you guys play it.

We would love to see you play “Lewis & Clark: The Expedition” by Ludonaute made by designer Cédrick Chaboussit and Artist Vincent Dutrait.

This is a beautiful strategy game with tokens and cards where you are leading an expedition from St Louis to the Pacific coast. You’re racing against your opponents to see who can set up camp at Fort Clatsop first.

Everyone starts off with a hand of six cards that perform the same functions. The strategy is in the way you produce and use resources to gain new recruits, buy upgrades, and improve your chance of being the first to reach the Pacific coast.

It’s easy to explain & learn, plays great with 4 players, and can usually be played in 90 minutes. It’s a strategy game but based on relying on certain cards to come up which might give you the recruits you need for your plan or not, it has a fairly good element of luck involved as well.

Sentinels of the Multiverse (Superhero card game)
    Zombies! (tile-laying, zombie-killing game)
Battlestar Galactica (based upon Tv show)
Boss Monster (retro video game side scroll card game)
    Citadels (town building card game)

Cosmic Encounter! (The old version, if you can get it). You get alien super powers and try to take over the planetary system. Super fun, especially if you get a good alien power. they have philanthropic powers (you can give away cards and help people out) and nasty powers (you can void an entire planet and make it uninhabitable) and other powers like “I get a new alien power every turn” or “my power makes us swap cards after we lay them down, so if you played a higher number than me I have a better chance at winning LOL” Ok, the power isn’t really called that. They have better names like “Cavalry”, “Filth”, “Loser”, and other way cool names I can’t remember right now. Awesome, awesome game.
