Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Games that allow the players to get creative.
That’s what I like most about the show and what makes me re-watch episodes regardless of knowing the results.
Thanks to you and the whole crew for a great show.
No specific game in mind, but what about multiple filler games? I know a lot of folks who would appreciate info on those
What about Killer Bunnies? It’s super easy to learn and the interaction between players is always hilarious. Especially funny to watch first time players when they realise that all their strategy could come to naught when the winner is basically chosen by dumb luck. It’s always a favourite at our games nights.
Rather dashing games. Grant Wilson
A couple I enjoyed at Gencon:
Sheriff of Nottingham (Arcane Wonders) – Bribery, Deception, and a good theme. What more could you want? Might be better with Hole Cameras, but I think it could work anyway.
Downfall of Pompeii (Mayfair games) – Escape from the doomed city while sacrificing your friends to appease the volcano gods.
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Firefly the game.
Munchkin!
There are several more versions of Ticket to Ride all with slightly different rules. TTR Asia has a team game where you and a partner play with the same trains and share some cards while also using your own… it is very cool.
I really love Killer Bunnies & the quest for the quest for the magic carrot. There are expansions, so I’m pretty sure it can get up to 90 mins.
Super Dungeon Explore
Krosmaster Arena
Boss Monster
Any variant of Fluxx
+1 for Super Dungeon Explore. Lots of fun, hack’n’slash type game. I know the developers have fully assembled / painted versions they used at conventions. Maybe they would provide one for the show if you contacted them?
Also there’s a new game I’ve been playing called Saboteur. It’s a cool bluffing game where you have to place cards to build to one of three face down cards to find the hidden gold.
Two players are miners trying to get the gold and two players are the saboteurs trying to stop them, with nobody knowing who is who.
I’m pretty sure that Knock Down Barns won’t be picked for the show but I sent you a copy in June to Stone Manners Salners Agency. They confirmed today that it was ‘forwarded’ on to you. I hope you like it and would love some feedback!
Rather dashing games
Letters from White Chapel would be an interesting game.
Love Letter (and maybe another from Tempest), Compounded, Definitely 7 Wonders, Coup
Rough: The Card Game, it’s good to play multiple times, plays 4 to 20, and lasts 10 minutes on average. The game launches on Kickstarter in September, but I can get a retail copy in you hand in a couple weeks!
If you want to see how awesome it is we are running a tournament at Strategicon this Saturday.
I would LOVE to see Red Dragon Inn from Slugfest Games. It is super fun, would make perfect sense on your show, and I could even see it being done as a drinking game for a Tabletop After Hours episode, which my play group has done many times in the past. Chipotle Tabasco does not mix with basically any alcohol well.
Channel A by Chris Cieslik (on Kickstarter) is a great group game, but may be too much of a party game, though you have played things similarly. The actual pitching and storytelling aspects make it an incredibly enjoyable game that could easily take up a whole episode, or a half episode like you’ve done in the past.
Those are my ideas, anyway. LOVE the show and cannot wait for more!
Gravwell and an actual episode of Rampage!
DnDizzle!
Dominion with or without the expansions
Gravwell is also super fun. Explains in an instant. Race as a group of interstellar travelers that have emerged on the other side of a singularity. Use gravity slingshots to escape through the star gate.
Have you played Arkham Horror? You should. It’s a long game (or can be) but it’s five kinds of awesome.
Stone Age is a good one! Fits all criteria, and even has Meeples!
Scallywags from Gamewright is a great quick piratey game.
One of the Fluxx games
Die Macher, rather old but arguably the best german board game ever. 3-4 players, heavy resource management and no obvious single winning strategy. The issue would be its not a 90 minute game unless you have someone who knows how to do so well doing the score tallying.
F**ktionary, the dirty word game that reveals your twisted side! Easy to learn and play, and inspires creative answers!
Story Cubes. There’s so much room to just let your imagination run. 🙂
Splendor would be great! Sheriff of Nottingham. Flashpoint. Imperial settlers. 7 wonders. Trains. Manhattan project. Nothing personal.
If you could play Galaxy Trucker (with some other spaceman actors) that would just make my life complete.
Guillotine, walk the plank, Poo the card game. All great filler games and quick plays.
I think RoboRally would be so much fun to watch you guys play.
Husband wants Zombicide.
I want to know if Terra Mystica is more interesting when others play it.
Possibly Euphoria?
Also, can we please request an appearance by Nathan Fillion (a Firefly episode?)? 😀
At least one game that breaks all those rules.
I was thinking an older game. Avalon Hill/Wizards of the Coast srategy games. Starship Troopers or Gettysburg.
Bootleggers, it’s a fantastic game and you can rock some old timey accents.
Zombicide, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Arcadia Quest, Relic.
Space Alert. It might be a different show, as a portion of it is played in an uninterrupted ten minute block.
Also would like to add Survive! Escape from Atlantis from Stronghold Games and The Downfall of Pompeii from Mayfair Games. Both are good games that have a “take that” element to them. Pompeii is also fun because you get to throw your opponents in the volcano.
I think Dominion would make an excellent choice. It is fairly fast, but has depth. It is quick to teach, and quick play. The cards themselves have some visual appeal.
If you wanted a variant game (which you’ve done before), one of the Munchkin spinoffs (Munchking Space, Super Munchkin) would be a lot of fun. It’s been a while since you did the original, and it was a great episode.
You could have a lot of fun if you could get the right guests for Star Trek: Attack Wing. I haven’t played it myself, but it is similar to Star Wars: X-Wing. and I’ve heard good things about it.
For a light, easy to play and extremely visual game, consider Quarriors. It’s a dice building game with lots of art and shiny, sparkly, colorful dice that look good on video.
Quick suggestions: Zombicide, Flash Point,
My son votes Heroclix
Manifest: http://www.manifestgame.com/
For short games, I second Love Letters and Coup, and would add One Night Ultimate Werewolf. The last may work particularly well with the night phase as a series of flashbacks, or even re-enactments as the players expound their theories of what has happened.
Shinobi WAT-AAH! Incan Gold, Jamaica, Manhattan Project, Tortuga, Kingsburg, Bang The Dice Game.
Monster Hunter International (Hero System).
A game called Burn in Hell from Steve Jackson games is pretty fun. Simple game where you play literally until hell freezes over. It has a darker theme like Gloom but it’s quite enjoyable.
Another is simple, Quirkle-esque, is Ingenious. Just colors and shapes and you score points based on matching colors and how they connect.
Also just a fun quick game, if you planned on doing short games, would be Eleminis You had so much fun and it’s cute.
Sorry didn’t mean to flood you with games but TT is such a fun thing for me and it is something I can’t wait to see more of.
Borscht
Flash Point
Seconding Flash Point…if you don’t mind the house collapsing!
SPANC — that is, Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirls. Such a fun, light-hearted game, great graphics, and oh the puns.
Also, Chrononauts. Time travel game that plays with alterate history.
Compounded from Dice Hate Me games
Harbor from Tasty Minstrel Games (when published)
Libertalia from Marabunta Games.
Libertalia is a great interactive game with visual interest, easy rules, and LOTS of interaction.
Ditto with Compounded. And you can throw the gems.
Harbor is an excellent small worker placement that plays in a short time with bright amazing art and minimal fiddling.
Euphoria! You have to play Euphoria!
4 players, under 90 minutes?
7 Wonders (Asmodee Games)
Infliltration (Fantasy Flight Games)
Cosmic Encounter (FFG’s latest printing is actually really nice. It’s not the Avalon Hill version, sadly, so no moons yet, but still great!)
Hex-Hex XL (Smirk and Dagger Games)
I think the last one is actually perfect for the Tabletop format, I’d love to see it on the show!
+1 for Infiltration… not as well rounded as it could be, but still a lot of fun with a risk vs reward type play style.
