Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

I would love to watch some oldschool classics – Clue, Pictionary, National Geographic, RoboRally, Sorry!…
Project: Dark
Zeppelin Attack
Fate Accelerated (I know, not a ‘board game’, and there’s no winning involved….)
Car Wars (bring back an old favorite!)
Class Struggle!!
If you haven’t played it yet, Marrying Mr. Darcy.
Sushi Go its a new game and meets all if your requirements!!! Fun for all ages too!
Eldritch Horror
Battlestar Galactica
Descent
Killer Bunnies
FireFly with Nathan Fillion as a guest!!!
Space Alert, though I understand that would be difficult with the audio. Or Trains!
I would put up, Scotland yard. It plays well with 4, looks nice. I don’t know how you feel about the luck / skill ratio though.
7 wonders would be good. Also my new favorite is Pastiche– you copy master pieces of artwork (with tiles, of course– no artistic sense needed) to get points to win the game. You also get tiny eensy weensy little easels– so cute!
I vote 7 Wonders. Quotes from last week’s game: “Ugh, I can’t believe I’m losing just because my illiterate army hates science and also I only have one soldier. I built a statue for my lumberyard — why is no one buying lumber?! It’s an excellent statue! Made from the finest lumberyard pines!”
Nuts and Dominion
Coliseum from days of wonder would be great. It looks amazing and plays in 90 minutes.
Eclipse (several publishers) – A space exploration/area domination game, similar to Risk, but so much better. Plays in about 30 minutes per player, best at 4 or 6 players. My personal favorite.
Legendary – from Upper Deck Entertainment – A MARVEL Comics deck building game. Plays in about 45 minutes, best with 3 players (but plays up to 5).
Amazonas – Mayfair Games – Explore the Amazon and gather resources before your rivals. Plays in about 50 minutes, best with 4 players.
7 Wonders – (several publishers) – Build one of the 7 Wonders of the world, while your opponents attempt to build theirs. Plays in about 30 minutes, best with 4 players.
3012 – Cryptozoic Games – A deck building game, compete against rival clans, gather the most victory points. Plays in about 60 minutes, best with 4 players.
I would love to see you guys play the Super Dungeon Explore game or one of the D&D board games Like Castle Ravenloft
For some old school love, Illuminati – New World Order from Steve Jackson Games
7 Wonders is fast, fun, and easy to pick up.
For people that like improv-type games, Superfight and the Meta-Game are both excellent.
The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game would be great to do with RPG types.
Tokaido is a unique game that plays simply, and has interesting scoring mechanics that will make for a unique viewing experience.
cash and guns 😉
Get Brian kibler on with ascension
Ruse. Its awesome and made by a really great guy Levi Mote! Plus the art is pretty amazing.

Rampage (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/97903/rampage) yes definitely play Rampage.
Looking at my library (not that extensive) the main idea is one called Libertalia. It is a interesting luck/strategy game where you play as pirates choosing members of your crew going out to raid the Libertalia. But a little problem is you start with the same cards to begin with and they have different rankings.
You have six days per round and each day you pick a card.
In each day there are three different phases
Morning: Lowest rank card does their ability to highest rank.
Evening: Highest rank do their abilities, and pick from a range of treasures to lowest rank.
Night: Special fun things.
At the end of the round, six days of gameplay, as well as extra abilities, you then add up your treasure and score for that round. There are three rounds and at the end the person with the highest score wins.
It leads to a great thing where two people play the monkey (which passes on negative treasure to the left) which would have then meant i would have got 5 cused masks. However, if there are duplicate cards they have a secondary ranking, which then meant the person to my right got landed with the cursed masks. Just to say she was not happy.
If you didn’t mind repeating Smash up has SO MANY AWESOME expansions. i love the spies and time travellers.and the ghosts. It’s just good.
Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot!
I’m putting in my recommendations for Coup, Pandemic: On the Brink, and Star Realms.
The first (while I have not played it yet) seems to me to be a combination of Masquerade and The Resistance- and it’s in The Resistance’s universe too!
The second, while an expansion, with things like the Bio-terrorist role really change things up.
And the third I’ve found is very easy to teach and learn, really fun to play, and while I haven’t played a game with more than two people usually doesn’t take too long.
Splendor
Flash Point
Paranoia (RPG)
Robo Rally
Zombicide
Zombies 15′
Escape the Curse of the Temple
Damage Report
Nearly all of these have the advantage of playing in 90 minutes or less, most in less than an hour (*), with the exception of Zombicide. But that is probably the best of twenty or so zombie-themed games I’ve played, so I still recommend it.
(The only time Flash Point takes this long is if you actually might win. If Paranoia takes longer than 90 minutes, the “Computer” for your group should probably be running a different game)
My friend introduced me to Quarriors recently. The fiancée and I are now hooked.
Oh, and I can’t forget the always chaotic “Roborally”
We want Grant Wilson’s Rather Dashing Games!!!!! And you should play with Felicia Day and Grant Wilson! <3
Zombicide!!
We demo’ed Castles of Mad King Ludwig at GenCon and loved it! Looked great and played fantastically with four…
I would like to see Rather Dashing Games on your show.
1000 Blank White Cards.
It isn’t a board game per-se, but is great fun. Basically, you have a stack of index cards, some of which are completed, some of which are blank. Each completed card has a title, a picture, and an action/points. The action could be anything at all more or less similar to action-bearing cards in other games. Points are arbitrary and +/- up to 1000. Cards can be played on yourself, someone else, or everybody. The person with the most points “wins”, but it’s more about creativity, and keeping other people from trying to win.
Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Blank_White_Cards
For the RPG series, how about playing Dungeon World?
Dominion either the basic or with one of the expansions
Red November. It’s a co-op about drunken dwarves trying to repair a failing submarine. The game feels like PC game Faster Than Light crossed with Pandemic. Always good for laughs and random hilarity when our D&D group has a board game night.
I’m a fan of Dominion. Quelf might work.
I’ve also run into the problem of “Oh, I have a great game! Oh…I learned about it from tabletop…”
I vote for Ca$h and Gun$ (second edition)
The Omega Virus
Milton Bradley
Fantastic board game, up to 4 players, timed so you can’t take too long on it (20-30 minutes usually).
It’s has an electronic voice that is the Omega Virus, you play against it, and each other.
The voice taunts you as you play, it’s pretty awesome.
A favorite from when I was a kid.
One small downside, it’s not in production, so you’ll probably have to find a used copy of the game, they’re out there for somewhat reasonable prices though if you look around online.
Sooo, probably not Civilization, I guess?
Gravwell Escape from the 9th Dimension! Easy game and a fun mechanic for moving ships around.
A quick, fun and visually interesting game would be A La Carte
Bang! by davimci games or Robo ralley. They are both fun games to play and both look cool so it`s a win-win.
You should do the D&D basic reboot. http://dft.ba/-dndjr
Lady Blackbird or Always/Never/Now would be awesome
RoboRally is a definite. I’d also love to see:
* Cash n Guns
* Bang!
* Galaxy Trucker (though not sure how well that’d work)
* Hanabi (as part of a mix of short games with Bang maybe?)
* Pirate Den (Why wouldn’t you?!?)
* Small World Underground (because it really deserves more attention)
* Blood Bowl Team Manager
Jamaica
Four Taverns and Dwarven Miner. Co created by Grant Wilson (Ghost Hunters)
Saboteur (Better with 5 players though), Stone Age, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Machi Koro, Suburbia, Black Fleet, Libertalia, and Quantum.
For short games, I would highly recommend:
-We Didn’t Playtest This at All by Asmadi Games, particularly with the We Didn’t Playtest This Either expansion. It’s a cheap, fun, fast game, based mostly on luck, and it’s really silly. http://asmadigames.com/detail_playtest.php
-Fluxx by Looney Labs. There are many different versions, it is also fast and fun, but involves much more strategy than We Didn’t Playtest (which isn’t saying much). http://www.looneylabs.com/games/fluxx
For longer games, I really like:
-Splendor by Space Cowboys, because it’s somewhat luck based, but also requires some strategy. It’s also pretty easy to explain to new people and easy to pick up. http://www.spacecowboys.fr/splendor/language:eng
-Bang! by dV Giochi. It’s kind of like The Resistance, but there are no missions; everyone takes turns attacking each other and trying to figure out who’s on who’s team. I would recommend this game with five or more players, but it’s doable with four. http://www.amazon.com/Da-Vinci-DVC-9100-BANG/dp/B001RU7UNW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=Bang%21
-The Red Dragon Inn by SlugFest Games. The premise is really fun, it involves some luck and some strategy, and overall, it’s a great game to play with friends. http://slugfestgames.com/games/rdi/rdi-1/
Games that I’ve never played but would like to see played: Dominion, Agricola, Puerto Rico, Marvel’s Legendary
Rather Dashing Games’s games!
Can request guest instead? I for one would love to see Sam Witmer and Chris Hardwick back on the show.
Sentinel Tactics!
