Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Red November from Fantays Flight is terrific fun – drunken communist gnomes trying to save their submarine.
It can be agonising watching the submarine fail, and the drunken gnomes drown as the compartment they have passed out in suddenly floods…
Also, Forbidden Desert, the sequel to Forbidden Island – haven’t played it myself, but I know lots of people who like it more than the first game.
I think suburbia would be a great play with all the hexes. Might be a little tough with all the personal play areas.
Labyrinth
7Wonders
RoboRally (!)
Heroes Wanted
Heroes of Metro City
Chrononauts
Historia
Fate RPG
Braggart!
Rather Dashing Games’s games !!!!!!
Assuming you can get a hold of a built and painted copy: Dreadfleet.
Talisman or Relic(the Warhammer 40,000 version of Talisman).
also, Dig Down Dwarf, a recently Kickstarted game looks like it is a great deal of fun (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1243534184/dig-down-dwarf-the-award-winning-strategic-dice-ga). Not been released from production yet, but it’s due out in October…
Agricola would work well:
Plays well with 4 people.
Check.
Plays in under 90 minutes.
Check.
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
Most of the rules are common sense. Check.
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
Well, OK, Agricola’s a strategy game, but 5/6 ain’t bad.
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
I can’t imagine a game that would photograph better than Agricola, especially if you get the animeeple/vegimeeple version. It’s just SO visual. Quadruple mega-check.
Is not something we’ve played before.
Unless I missed the best episode ever… Check.
Look into Dwarven Miner or Four Taverns, both by Rather Dashing Games. They’re pretty easy to get the hang of and would definitely be appreciated by this target audience.
A lot of people, myself included, want to see Dwarven Miner played. I hope he does. Plus would be a bonus to have Grant Wilson on the show when they play it.
I agree — Dwarven Miner would be perfect!
Rather Dashing has such amazing games! I’d love to see you playing their games for sure!
Cutthroat Caverns
Great suggestion!
inn-fighting! tho my dream is see you guys play dominion or the star trek TNG deck building game…but those might not be best for this format.
Dread Curse
My votes are for red dragon inn, bang!, Poo!, the adventurers pyramid of horus, firefly the board game, blood bowl team manager… theres just so many.
Wasabi!
Acquire – old skewl!
Forbidden Desert – gotta sequel it up!
How about A Touch of Evil? The box says 1-2 hours but it doesn’t have to take the full two hours.
I would love to see A Touch of Evil and Letters From Whitechapel.
So, I’m assuming the Game of Thrones board game is out of the question then?
Play BOSS MONSTER. It’s a card game that has you racing to lure heroes to your dungeon and kill them. Tons of luck and strategy to this one
Pretty shocked there’s so many suggestions for Chrononauts. Didn’t realize there were so many fans. I considered it because I thought it would lend itself to great comedic player chatter, but dismissed it because it’s not particularly visual.
Have they done Red Dragon Inn? I think they need to do Red Dragon Inn.
Steam Park, published by iello. I like it since it has simultaneous dice rolling to determine the actions, rules are simple and it looks great as you are physically building an amusement park.
Killer Bunnies by playroom entertainment. A huge ratio of luck as the winner is determined by random card draw at the end. It’s got a munchkin feel to it but with a little more strategy during gameplay.
Dwarven Miner– Rather Dashing Games!
Wil I have several suggestions.
Ghost stories
Published by ASMODEE
Created by Antoine Bauza
It is a 1 to 4 player co-operative game, Plays 60 to 90 minutes. It is a beautiful game, easy to explain, easy to play, but hard to win. Balanced luck to strategy ratio.
I personally love this game!
7 Wonders.

3 to 7 player game. Plays in 30 minutes. Can be explained in 5 minutes. Easy to play. Balanced luck to strategy ratio.
It is a must have in any collection.
Police Precinct
Published by Common Man Games

1 to 6 player co-operative game. Plays in 60 to 90 minutes. Super easy to explain. Easy to play. Balanced luck to strategy ratio. We have to much fun doing cop siren noises, while moving our cop cars around the board. There is a traitor element in the game if someone is the “bad cop”.
I personally think this game was made for tabletop.
Dwarven Miner
Published by Rather Dashing Games
Designed by Mike Richie, with Artwork by Grant Wilson (Yeah the guy from Ghost Hunters the TV show on SyFy)
2 – 4 Player game. Plays in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Easy to explain, Easy to play. Decent luck to strategy ratio. Great game for those lazy rainy days.
Here is my thoughts on why you should consider this game. You have a show on Syfy, Grant has a show on Syfy. Would be awesome to promote a game he helped make.
In addition, this game was created in KY. People think of coal, bourbon, horse racing, and college basketball when they think about KY. It would be awesome if they knew that we love to play and design board games as well.
Wil I donated to the Tabpletop season three fundraiser on Indiegogo. I hope you consider choosing one or more of these games for Season 3 of Tabletop. And if you do not I understand.
Play More Games!
Guillotine
Kingdom Builder
Dominion
Thunderstone
Star Trek Attack Wing
Wasabi
Survive
DC Deck building Game
Marvel Deck Building Game
Defenders of The Realm
Mice And Mystics
Red November
Hey! That’s my fish!
Almost anything from fantasy flight games. Primarily thinking Eldritch Horror. The Adventurers. Zombicide maybe. Decent.
I tried to comment before but technologie hates me. shakes fist Let’s try again.
Why don’t you play Killer Bunnies? It is super easy to learn and is perfect for 4 players. The interaction between players is always hilarious and it is especially funny to watch the reactions of first timers at the end of the game when they realise their strategy really doesn’t count for much. Killer Bunnies is always a favourite at our monthly games nights.
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Publisher: Greater than Games
Why: Coop comic book hero fun!
Talisman
Letters from Whitechapel, Dragon Slayer, and Splendor
Also really like the looks Transylvania: Curses and Traitors but it hasn’t been published yet. (March 2015)
Euphoria or Evil Baby Orphanage (with the nerdfighter expansion) or Guillotine. I would vote Firefly board game or The doctor who card game but I’m assuming those wouldn’t be as feasible…
Dwarven Miner or Four Taverns… Really anything by Rather Dashing Games
Nothing Personal (with former real life mobster Michael Francese and Tom Vasel, would be an epic show)
Bang: The Dice Game
Alien Frontiers
Dragon Slayer (new dice game)
Coup
Incan Gold
Jamaica
Steam Park
Cash n’ Guns
Survive: Escape From Atlantis
Las Vegas
Cadwallon: City of Thieves. Beautiful aesthetic, fun dice/tactics-based game wherein each player controls a guild of Thieves trying to get the most loot. Fits all the Tabletop requirements, and is really fun.
My friends and I played 7 wonders. We looked for Tabletop to teach us and couldn’t find it. Would love to see it on Tabletop.
How about a game from the company called Rather Dashing Games.
Hot Rod Creeps by Cryptozooic. Customizable racing board board game. (http://www.cryptozoic.com/games/hot-rod-creeps)
And for classic gamin’ Nuclear War by Flying Buffalo (http://www.flyingbuffalo.com/nucwar.htm)
Dead of Winter
Ages 13+
2-5 players
60-120 minutes
I haven’t played but it looks really awesome, “it is a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world”. What makes it sound cool is that you have your own goal and a group goal. So you can double win, lose and win, or double lose. Plaid Hat just released it this summer and they plan on making a series of similar style games.
Spy Ally. Might not be the most graphically interesting, but it meets all your other criteria and it would be so funny watching the players pretending to be spies and trying to fool one another.
Letters from Whitechapel
Bang!
Descent
Star Wars Armada
One of my favorite games is Hot Rod Creeps from Cryptozoic. It’s a goofy, customizable racing game with really cool artwork that’s loads of fun to play.
Instead of using dice to determine movement, you play cards which tell you how many spaces to move (and can provide secondary effects). Also you can upgrade your car with better tires, engines, weapons, etc. if you land on the right space. All of which can make for a good mix of strategy and luck.
It is for 2-6 players and has an estimated playtime of 30-45 minutes, so I think it would be a great choice, especially since I really love the artwork.
Zombicide.
Discworld Ankh Mopork – great potential for each player to win, with the intrigue of trying to figure out who each player is. Lots of small details for fans of Prachett’s work, but easy and enjoyable for non-readers too!
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/91312/discworld-ankh-morpork
Crossfire, RedShirts, Forbidden Desert, Periodic Quest
Holy crap there must be every single employee (and all their relatives) from Rather Dashing Games posting on here. All I’m seeing is posts saying just “Rather Dashing Games” instead of actual game titles. They make good games, but good gravy this is a little ridiculous.
Survive Escape from Atlantis would be a perfect fit for Tabletop, that’s my #1 recommendation
additionally: Downfall of Pompeii, morbid and fun, the winning combination!
Rather Dashing Games – Dwarven Miner!
I also thing Battlestar Galactica would be awesome. Not sure how well it would translate to 30 minute show tho…
Galaxy Trucker!
Seconded! Galaxy Trucker is kickass.
Agree. Please do this.
