I have a Canon 70D, and I love it. I’ve invested in some great lenses, including a 16-35 and 17-55 at 2.8, an 8mm fisheye, and a 60mm macro. It shoots beautiful video and stills, and I can get into the settings of this magnificent beast to take lots of beautiful pictures.
The thing is, I don’t carry it around with me as much as I would if it were smaller. It’s perfect for days when I get it into my head that I’m going to go and take lots of pictures of things, and pretend that I’m a Real Photographer™, but carrying it around is a commitment.
Enter this little, waterproof, Olympus point-and-shoot thing that I picked up recently. It shoots video, has a decent lens for its size, and fits entirely in my pocket.
I’ve been carrying it around with me this weekend, and here are some pictures I took using its black and white “art photo” setting.
Not bad for a little point-and-shoot thing, right? I could do the post-processing in gimp or whatever, but there’s something fun about seeing these shots like this on the camera’s little screen.

Awesome Wil I Wish I Had a Camera Myself umm Someday Maybe but Right Now I’m Trying to Save up and get the the Rest of my BearGrylls Gear I Don’t want to Elaborate on it but when I do then I Can Work on my other Survival Gear, Wil I Like to be Prepared at all Times you Never Know with the Unexpected So I Like to be Ready To go at all Times.

Love the dog photos – I’m glad I’m not the only one who considers dogs to be great photo subjects! I understand what you mean about carrying the camera around…I have a nice camera with additional lenses, and I get great picture quality when I use it, but lugging it around is inconvenient. You have a nice way of framing your photos. Thanks for sharing!
Very nice. I faced the same dilema about camera size and decided to try a mirrorless SLR. The Sony A6000 to be exact. Closer quality to a full size, but lighter and easier to carry. Frankly though the shots you got here are great with a point and shoot.
Wow. Both those shots of Marlowe make her look like she’s featured in some “you can help animals in distress” ad. Clearly, she’s working the “unloved and NEVER EVER EVER BEEN FED” angle, that scam artist.

Wil, Thank you for sharing. One of the reasons I am a fan of your work is you are a nice guy. You kind of let us into your life like we are friends or fellow human beings or something. I do not know, but it makes this old gal feel that there are nice people in the world. Am glad you are into photos. The pictures are good. Your dog looks like he is not quite sure what to do. laughter. He’s so cute. My big ham always manages to put his tail to a camera. You are a good man Wil Wheaton.
I like all of them, but that last one… I adore that picture. Like the composition, lighting, and that look on her face… Perfect.

My kit is much smaller with just a Canon T3 and a couple of lenses, but I’ve run into the same thing. So often the great shot happens when you’re either not with your DSLR, or, by the time you get the right lens on the shot is gone. I’ve been using my iPhone for those shots but it’s an inelegant solution at best. I’ve thought about your solution, and the waterproof appeals for vacationing near water 🙂
Can you tell us which Olympic you got, and how vigorously, if at all, you’ve tested the waterproofiness?
It’s a tough something or other. I haven’t tested the waterproofiness, yet.
You should put it on your one of your dogs’ collar in video mode and see what they get up to when you’re not at home.
And the model # is…. I’m in the market for a decent point and shoot that fits in my pocket, the video option is a plus as well. I don’t like carrying my cell on camp outs.

I’m not thrilled with my iPhone’s camera (especially in low light), but I don’t buy another camera because I know that exactly this would happen – it will sit at home except for picture taking expeditions (vacations, etc.) and I always have my phone with me.
One day, the phones will have high-quality cameras on them and then the universe will once again be in harmony.
I’ve saving for the same model but hub the time I’m ready, the 80D would replace it. “80D” is phonetically “U” in morse code.
I have the same exact problem. I’ve invested in some good lenses for my Nikon, as well as Canon, but just never seem to think about going out with it and taking pictures. Now that my daughter is born, I’m pretty sure I will get around to using it a lot more.
The pictures look awesome! The last one of Marlowe is amazing.
My sweetie and I both have Nikon DSLR’s, and both of us leave them on the shelves. We take our little Panasonic LUMIX cameras with us on trips and don’t have that monster weight hanging on our necks. When we see folks with giant SLR’s, we go BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

completely off topic here but did you ever wonder why the music and movie studios never said a word about the red button on a boom box or a dual deck VCR. We was copying music and movies back then and they said nothing and that was easy compared to now. The only thing easier now is trading them. Oh and one other thing Steven Spielberg better cast you in ready player one. I love that book and the way you read it..Just love it.
I agree that the best camera is the one you have at hand. If you really want to go nuts, try your hand at film. Be warned, if you do, there is no cure. Sorry 🙂
