Tabletop Season 4 Day 5: Star Realms and Five-Year Mission

  • blog

IMG_20160502_095636We did two games today, and I remember why I insisted that we only do one game a day, because I’m exhausted.

I had a whole lot of fun, but holy crap am I exhausted. I don’t know how I did this for ten straight days for three seasons, but I’m glad we don’t do it that way any more.

So in the morning, we played Star Trek: Five-Year Mission, which is a surprisingly fun cooperative dice-placement game. Like Dragon Farkle, it’s a game I shouldn’t like at all because dice (and as much as I love Star Trek, I’m inclined to stay away from it in my work, because of reasons) but I have fun whenever I play it, and it’s a good game for introducing people to our hobby. I played with Jesse Cox, Jaime King, and Jessica Chobot … and it was pretty hilarious.

In the afternoon, we did something I never thought would work, but ended up working spectacularly well: we played a 2-player game! Melissa De Tora, who is a professional Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour player came down from Seattle to battle heads-up with me in a game that I love called Star Realms. If you like deck building games like Ascension, you’re going to go nuts for Star Realms, which has my favorite Tabletop game app since Carcassonne.

Tomorrow, we’re playing Flashpoint: Fire Rescue, because if there’s one thing I want to play more of on Tabletop, it’s co-op games that we’re probably going to lose. (No, seriously, I really enjoy co-op games that I expect to lose, because that makes the improbable victories that much better).

Take a break, Wil. Have some granola mix and yogurt and you’ll get a second wind. If you need some Perrier and a towel I’ll send them to you asap 🙂

Is Yuri Lowenthal going to join you this season? I love that guy, he’s absolutely hilarious!

I notice there’s quite a lot of co-op games this season, I am curious how it will turn out. Can’t wait for the show to air!!

I was worried for a while we might not see another season. This show and the whole channel has encouraged me to embrace my inner Tabletop gamer and overall nerd-ism. I’ve even started a YouTube show just about living in my weird self. Can’t wait for more episodes!

If anyone likes co-op games that you will probably lose, you should definitely try Ghost Stories. If you win that, you probably got a rule wrong because it is insanely hard, but still amazingly fun.

Flash Point is perhaps my absolutely favorite game. Two roles I would suggest for starting would be the HazMat guy to clear them out ASAP then change to a different role, and the fire captain as the last player to go is very useful. For new players I always try to push them to the Generalist so they don’t have to worry about special rules.

I’m just disappointed that the series seems to be ended. Travis was faithfully doing a Kickstarter for an expansion every year and has skipped the last two, also he’s not responding to emailed questions about the future of the series.

And don’t do the submarine or the ship for the taping — they’ll seriously kick your butt!

Things like this make me very happy. Hope all is well, WIl. Can’t wait to see you and Anne again!

    Hiya Will,
I can see any you only do one game a day. Why two on this day? Scheduling worked out that way?

If I can make a convention that you’re at, I’d like to say “Hello” if you’re cool with it. Have fun get some rest. I totally mean it dude is sleep,ya hear?: -)

Not gonna lie, I was kind of hoping you’d play Star Trek: Five-Year Mission with some of your fellow TNG cast members.

I will continue to imagine that episode in my mind while I enjoy the one you actually filmed, I’m sure… 😉

I agree. I’m sure the episode will be seriously fun, but how much more fun to play a Star Trek game with your Star Trek family?

So no Next Generation Reunion Special episode of Table Top this season?

I invited Frakes, because he’s been giving me shit for three years about how he never got to come play on the show, but he’s on location the whole time we’re in production.

      1. Karlen says:
        4 May, 2016 at 9:12 am

Oh, how we would have jumped up and down if Frakes had played Five Year Mission with you.

        Jumped. Up. And. Down.

      2. Gabe Holland says:
        4 May, 2016 at 9:22 am

That’s a shame because I really gained a new respect for you and the rest of the TNG crew watching the convention videos and seeing how much you genuinely liked each other. I think it’s so much more engaging (and even uplifting) to watch people who enjoy each other.

      3. Chris says:
        4 May, 2016 at 2:14 pm

Aw man, that would’ve been rad. But still I’m excited to see Jesse Cox again–his appearances on Stone Age & Carcassonne were pretty hilarious–and Jessica Chobot (who, being such a staple in the Nerdist family, just makes me think, “how has she not been on before?”).

I’m excited to see how the 1-on-1 format goes too!

Wil, you mentioned something not so positive about dice so I thought about you when I came across this kickstarter for “D-bags”. I hope you will take a couple of minutes and check this out; they’re actually pretty cool! Seems like they’d be quite functional for people of the gaming ilk.

    Curious about two things!

A.) How long of a day do you shoot for Tabletop?

B.) If you happen to have a list of tabletop apps (or make one), you ought to direct me to it. So, you know, I can download all of them. Carcassone is one of my favorites, as well, but Ticket To Ride is also pretty great!

I was wondering if they were going to use one of the
multiplayer variants for Star Realms. Guess not. 🙂
