Daily December 23 – Ziggy’s Gift

  • blog

The only Christmas song you ever really need is Allan Sherman’s The 12 Gifts of Christmas.

We don’t really celebrate Christmas in the traditional way, here in Castle Wheaton. We aren’t religious, and we aren’t like Super Consumers Who Give Gifts To Each Other (the best of all traditions is not giving or getting gifts, and instead just having a nice dinner together with our family) so Christmas is pretty much just another day for us. That feels weird, kinda, because it was such a big thing when I was a kid, and then again when my kids were little.  We don’t even have a tree this year, mostly because I couldn’t find an appropriately sad Charlie Brown tree to put in the living room.

But I did get you all a present! It’s a brand new TV Crimes podcast, with Mikey Neumann and the One Who Isn’t Mikey Neumann!

“All that other stuff” is the most elegant solution ever devised to the fundamental problem with this beloved but dreaded carol.

Laughing has recently been exhausted in my life, I needed a fresh supply. Thank you.

The two littles do t really know what that are in for but miss Claire is psyched for Christmas. I’m looking forward to their fun. I always “open” everything when I wrap it (and cut all the ties, rubber bands and straps) and put in batteries so they can tear open the paper and immediately play. Easy Christmas morning.
It snowed a bit and we built a ramp off our patio. These our the next door neighbors but all of us have been playing on this non stop.

No worries, my wife and I don’t celebrate Christmas either. The whole exchange of goods always seemed a bit strange, but I especially got turned away from the practice when I couldn’t afford any gifts for numerous years and I always felt like a failure at life, when in reality those formative years of struggle gifted them [my family] not with material goods, but with a more understanding and patient son and brother. Though I’m sure my Mom still loved it when I was finally able to get her a new TV 😛

My ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE Christmas song is Bob Rivers’ The Twelve Pains of Christmas. It ALWAYS makes me laugh so loud and I have to share it all the time. My favorite part is “Rigging up the lights!” Mele Kalikimaka to you and your family.

I deeply envy your ordinary day Christmas. I really kind of hate Christmas (parents divorced and remarried with new families and blah blah, bah humbug) but my kid LOVES it (his letter from Santa came yesterday and he almost lost his mind) so every year I suck it up and pretend to be into this whole holiday thing. yay…
Thanks for the new TV Crimes, you and Mikey are the best together! I hope you have a great weekend with your family. I am off to go bake cookies and watch the Santa tracker with breathless anticipation, making absolutely certain that bedtime arrives before Santa does. Happy Saturday!

May the Great Festive Bird of the Season fly straight up your nose and lay hundreds of eggs of Joy and Prosperity and Great Sex and Chocolate in your brain such that they hatch all the year long and you sneeze them all over yourself and everyone you love almost constantly!
