I’ve been experimenting with a Shoutcast music stream that Mysterious Kevin helped me set up. I have a bunch of different playlists that I rotate through, including 70s punk, 80s metal, 90s ambient electronica, and 90s grunge. I mix in a bunch of random weird and strange files that I find online, including excerpts from Star Trek Power records, ancient European commercials, audio bloopers from various TV shows, and other things you’d expect to find on a mixtape. If you’ve ever heard my podcast mixtapes, you know what to expect.
You should be able to listen to this in any browser, or you can download the .pls file to stream in VLC or the media thingy of your choice. I also think this little player thingy should work right here. If I configured it the way I want, it should even be playing AUTOMATICALLY LIKE MAGIC (I reconfigured this so it doesn’t autoplay, based on your feedback.):
The current playlist (which I expect to keep live all week) is the 80s metal collection. It features some Sabbath, Maiden, Van Halen, Metallica, Scorpions, and stuff like that.
Unrelated: this new WordPress composer (BLOCKS AND BLOCKS AND OTHER BLOCKS IS HOW WE DO IT NOW) is really weird and makes me feel like a very old man who used to hand-code blog entries in raw HTML. I’m sure it’s very powerful and flexible when you get used to it, but right now I feel like I’m writing with someone else’s hands.
ALSO UNRELATED: The Star Trek cruise was amazing and deserves its own entry, but I’ve been decompressing and catching up on work since we got back, and I haven’t had time to sit down to properly compose my thoughts.
RELATED: Van Hagar sucks.
Oh, and also…
First song when I found the link: War Pigs. Then a Star Trek… something. Then Iron Maiden, followed by one of my fav Metallica songs, Justice For All.
You, sir, are the shit. I’m pretty convinced we could be friends.
I wish there was an MP3 of this so I could put it on my MP3 player (I know..I know. MP3 players are VERY old news) to take to the gym with me. 🙁
Save this for later but since you like FM-84, please give a listen to VHS Collection. It’s my new synth pop obsession. Hope to listen to your station soon.
Agree to disagree about the Sammy Hagar era … yes, it was a dramatic change in tone from the Roth era, not to mention a change in focus, but there were some wonderful pieces of music that came out of those years. Not everything was a winner, but 5150, Runaround, Poundcake, and a few others were definite standouts that would never have been written or released had Roth still been the frontman.
Glad you had a good time on the cruise. I hope you have a productive and profitable new year.
I had to laugh at the “Van Hagar Sucks!” You, sir, are correct! I’m glad you had a good time on the Star Trek cruise; I would love to hear the who/what/where/when/how stories!
Harrah sir. We miss RFB
I migrated a client website to WordPress.com last week and got to experience the new editor. It’s not just you Will. I’m a web nerd so I get the concept of blocks with a single content type in them, but I have to think that is going to be very unintuitive for people that haven’t been publishing online since the 90s.
Classic Editor plugin is your friend 😉
It gives you the old WordPress editor back as the default editor (You can still use the new block one if you want as well, but at least it lets you ease into the change,)
Noice!
Please don’t do that autoplay thing again, Wil?
It was…an unexpected surprise when it happened on my Dreamwidth blog-site’s friends-page.
And I empathize about getting used to new user interface systems.
Seconding the please, please don’t autoplay audio/video. If I mute it, if I block it, everything I try to do, if I refresh the page, there is once again music blasting in my ears, which is not great times when you’re in the middle of an audio transcription, so you have your transcription headset turned up so you can pick up the quiet speaking in the audio file. 🙁
Coincidentally, it’s also my Dreamwidth friends page where I had this problem.
Welcome back, my friend. And welcome back, Shoutcast – I’ve missed this. (Your old Shoutcast introduced me to Cake, for which if nothing else I would be grateful.)
Classic D&D font? My curiosity is piqued.
So good to hear from you, Wil, and I’ll check out the Shoutcast tomorrow! Sounds amazing! I love 80 metal! Take care and here’s wishing you and yours a fantastic New Year in 2019!
Wil, I love 80’s metal but not unexpectedly and from tinny laptop speakers. For all that is righteous and good turn autoplay OFF.
Hello Wil,
I’m glad you’re enjoying your shoutcast. I remember you having difficulties getting it working at the start so it’s good you were able to sort that all out.
The music isn’t to my taste, but my musical choices have been described as “eclectic”. They have also been described as “That odd shit Mick listens to”. So if you like it, go for it.
Speaking of your podcast, will we ever get more Radio Free Burrito? I miss it despite the craving it gives me (Mexican food is, unsurprisingly, hard to come by in rural Ireland)
Two days until WHAT? You tease!
Good music but must join the crowd here – autoplay is evil. Please turn it off!
Van Halen with Sammy Hagar may not be to your liking, but give his solo music a try. He’s far more talented than David Lee Roth.
Very cool. Will check it out when I can!
BTW, I think you can revert to the classic editor in WordPress; I haven’t looked into it because personally I’ve been enjoying the Gutenberg editor.
Loving the music so far. Great tracks…. But something came to mind as I was listening. Do you need a copyright license to be able to do streaming like this and pay royalties to the copyright holders for tracks played? Or is that only needed when doing it for commercial uses… Anyways like I said just a thought that crossed my mind.
I’m not making any money off of this, so if anything it’s just promotion for the artist.
I think technically if someone was feeling really sour they could send you a take-down notice – this is the world we live in.
But given that you’re not doing anything commercially I can’t see it being on anyone’s radar for copyright infringement!
Okay, I love this!
your Van Hagar comment… so funny, just last week i fell into a van halen discography binge and somewhere early into 5150, i felt myself thinking, “this is a bit… shit”
it definitely does not fare well when played immediately after the DLR-era records.
Honestly, I think being critical of Sammy Hagar is pointing the finger in the wrong direction. The difference was the production. With Roth, they had a raw sound and a sense of fun that people love. When Hagar joined, they were more polished and developed a serious side. Comparing DLR and SH, it’s very clear Sammy is far more talented.
+1 for the Classic Editor plugin. Some of us don’t have time to fart around with the block editor.
I enjoyed meeting you Wil. The cruise was a wonderful experience. Everyone was real friendly. I especially thrilled to have my photograph taken with you and Gates. The photos came out beautifully. You will forever have a place in my heart as Wesley.
Van Hagar! I dare anyone to find a more profound or poetic lyric than “…only time will tell if we stand the test of time…”
I figured it out guys! Go to http://www.shopstands.com. Wil’s giving us a chance to become Role Models for the Pasadena Humane Society!
Run, don’t walk, and install the classic editor. Gutenberg is just the worst. Editors shouldn’t fight you the whole way. It shouldn’t take longer to post and you shouldn’t be super frustrated by the end of it.
Totally respect your non-blogging time, and just want to say, 100% pressure and agenda free, that it is great to see a post from you and hope your lovely family (including you) found lots of peaceful joy to absorb since your last post.
Nice post, Wil. I haven’t tried the new editor except for a bit. I heard it’s definitely easier to use though. Have a good week. Debbie
+2 on Classic Editor plugin, I couldn’t stand the blocks thing
Loving the playlist 🤘🏼🤘🏼First song ‘smells like teen spirit’ and you had me hooked from there 🙂 I’ve not logged in in awhile, really struggling atm. But I view your ‘good’ things as evidence of hope in the world. Keep talking hun, we are here and we do care xxxx much loves xxxx
Hi! One of the core developers of the new editor turned me on to this post. I offer some courses on the new editor (gutenberg.courses) and would love to offer you a free pass to any of them if it might help 🙂
Thanks for what you do!!!
