50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

i’m writing a new book

  • blog
  • Books

I can’t talk about what, specifically, I’m writing, but I am excited af to say that today, I began work on my next writing project.
It’ll be about a year or so before this project is finished and on shelves, but today, I got into it for the first time.

The beginning is always a slog. I have to just puke up whatever is in my brain, so I can put down a foundation and some framing. I’m doing work that likely won’t be seen by anyone other than my editor, but it’s still vital to the process.

This particular beginning isn’t as tough as I was expecting, which is a blessing. Every book, every essay, every speech, all have their own process, their own discovery, their own expression of my creative self. Each one is different, and each one takes some time to tell me how it’s going to be written. This thing seems to be easier and more fluid than I expected it would be, and the words came very easily this morning.

I expect that I’m going to rewrite and reject a lot of what I’m doing today, but HOLY SHIT does it feel good to be doing it. I haven’t been a capital-w Writer for a long, long time, and though the Writer Outfit is a little wrinkled and musty, it still fits.

    I. Am. So. Excited. Your voice as a writer is one of my favorites out there. This is such happy news! I hope you have so many wonderful experiences while crafting this book!

And how about just his voice? Perhaps narrating a thing would get the juices flowing. A cheap project, like reading something to his kids at bedtime with a mic on. (They’re probably too old, but I can’t remember that stuff. I’m not THAT Wil Wheaton obsessed)

Maybe you are not puke up stuff. Maybe you are scattering seeds some of which will sprout into the perfect idea.

Five or six years ago I read a post of yours where you also spoke of the “capital W” writer, and just a couple of hours after reading the post, as I drove down the road, I ended up behind a Wheaton World Wide moving truck. Their logo emphasizes the capital W in the word Wheaton, and so as I sat wondering at this how the vision sounded, and the coincidence of it, their website caught my eye, wheatonworldwide, conjuring up a playback of the scene(s) where Sheldon angrily cries out your BBT character’s name, while an image of the whole world from space is on the screen.

I love all your creative work!!! I have written a novel and keep telling myself it’s time to try to get it published or at least looked at then to start the next one. I enjoyed your comments on the process. Beginning is indeed the worse. All the best to you and yours and your new project!

Awesome, sir. Best wishes with your project and it reminds me I need to get off my own butt and finish the first draft I’ve been avoiding for, well, years, if I’m honest. Especially since we’re about the same age and not getting any young.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! Good on you, Wil! I’m glad the outfit still fits. Turns out, so does my writer outfit. It’s been in storage for a while, too, and it’s definitely wrinkled and musty, but here we go again!

Came here on a search for “Soylent Green” “Earth To Infinity” and discovered your affection for it. It was on a compilation in the 90’s called “Chill Out!”, and the whole album is great to write or code to. Perhaps it’s time to bust it out!

Another favorite group: “The Irresistible Force”, and their album “Global Chillage”. Add it to the playlist!

Incidentally, I did some digging with that song “Soylent Green” … Turns out all the voice samples in that song, describing the conflict in the 1960’s, are from an episode of a PBS series called “Making Sense of the Sixties”, from 1991. Here’s the relevant episode with a relevant quote: ( https://youtu.be/OW-GgFinUhc?t=1597 )
