Tabletop Season 4 Day 2: Mysterium

IMG_20160425_102325So this one time, Dixit and Clue got stuck in an elevator, and … well, Mysterium happened … and I’m really glad that it did. It’s one of those games that plays pretty quickly, and whether I win or lose, I want to play again right away.

This game has been on my list since I first saw it at GenCon last year, because it’s just perfect for our show. Also, the artwork that is such an important part of this game is so beautiful, I’d like to buy a whole lot of it and hang it on my walls in Castle Wheaton.

I played with David Kwong, Laura Bailey, and Shannon Woodward.

I freaking LOVE this game, and I think the episode we shot today is going to do a great job showing people exactly why. And here’s a super neat not-so-secret: if you own Dixit, you can use your Dixit cards with Mysterium, for an instant expansion.

Totally agree. I’m glad this one will get to be seen through the TableTop audience. It deserves as much exposure as possible.

    I love this game, too.
I prefer the character/location/object art and the other physical game elements of Mysterium to the original game (Tajemnicze Domostwo) it’s based on, especially the ghost’s screen is fantastic as you can see all the cards and they are nicely sorted.
What I don’t like in this version is the mechanic of the betting tokens so we’ve always played it with just a common vision at the end in which all players can see all the cards. The tokens add a competitive element to a game that should be completely cooperative.

My wife and I have completely done away with the betting aspect. We too like to keep this game completely cooperative, so everyone gets the complete shared vision at the end.

Did you play the rules straight from this edition? We found that some of them get a little more complicated for younger aged players.

We used some rules variants, and explained which ones, and why. One of the things I love about Mysterium is how it encourages you to use rules variants from different editions to make the game exactly what you want it to be.

I’m not a fan of how essentially the ghost is just framing a suspect at the end depending on which one their cards are best for. A better and more challenging mechanic would be if the ghost had to select which suspect was the correct one right from the beginning, and be bound to try and direct everyone towards it even if their vision cards sucked.

We do something like this. During setup, once the ghost has all the person/place/weapon combos in place, we number them and then randomly draw the number that will go at the top of the play area. Keeps the ghost from picking the “easier” choice.

First Dracula, now this? You’re inside my head and playing all my favorite games.

We’re hoping to have a Mysterium night where we cosplay as the investigators at our Board Game Cafe sometime this year… Should be bril!

Oh man, I’m so happy you’re playing this. Me and my bf could not figure out the rules. (Mind you alcohol was involved)

I do not actually know how to play Clue (though I can recite basically the entire film), but Dixit is my jaaaaaam. Seriously, it is my toast, it is my knife, it is my jam (to quote The Doubleclicks). I discovered it through Tabletop and now, no trip to GameHaus is complete without me forcing my friends to play it with me. I look forward to the episode and hopefully trying Mysterium someday. 🙂

And ditto on the (buy multiple versions of the game and hang the art on the walls). One day, I will have Multiple-Copies-of-Games kind of money I hope. I already know which Dixit cards I’d frame first. 🙂

    Hi, Wil,

Just wanted to drop in to say how happy I am that you are happy about Tabletop again. It is the show that opened my eyes to the world of tabletop gaming, after 20 years of only the occasional backgammon.
And most people in the board games community in my town have started to play because of your show. You have touched more lives that you know, and I hope this encourages you to continue. Though that might not benefit my wallet 🙂
    So, play more games!

I’m very happy that you are happy doing Tabletop again, Wil. Panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorders, et al. are some of the most painful and agonizing parts of being who and what we are, and proper happiness doesn’t come easy. Keep it up! I’m looking forward to seeing the new season!

SO happy you are doing TABLETOP again Wil! Half(at least) of my game library is courtesy of the show and I have even started hosting tabletop tournaments with my friends! Can’t wait til it’s released so I can see more great games on season 4!

“Dixit meets Clue”: this is EXACTLY how I describe this game to my friends! We were just talking about this game and several others, as well as your show, on my friend’s podcast “Between the Cons.”
My wife and I are thrilled TableTop is back! Your show got me back into gaming and gave my wife and I yet another thing to bond over. Looking forward to adding these games to our buy list!
