Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
Jamaica, Bang!, Bohnanza, Cards Against Humanity, Fluxx (any version though I like pirates, Monty Python, and zombie the best), Guild Hall, Seven Wonders, Telestrations, Catchphrase, Bezzerwizzer, Castle Panic, We Didn’t Playtest This Either, and more of King of Tokyo (expansions) and another version of Ticket to Ride with the lovely Anne Wheaton.
There was a few different games I saw at GenCon this year from the publisher Smirk and Dagger. Because all of their games are designed for you to be a d*ck and mess with the other people that you are playing with, I imagine anything from there would make a pretty comical episode. Although, I think it would be amazing if you had a special episode with more than 4 people and played a game of Ultimate Werewolf!
I’m big into the twist on an oldy but a goody. Risk 2210 set in the future.
It’s able to be played on a timeline cuz it’s a fixed number of rounds and you start each game by nuking 5 territories. Every game is is a new strategy.
Also, you can take over the moon. THE MOON! muahaha. What better place to stage your epic conquest of world domination than from the MOON!
I would love to see Eldritch Horror but unfortunately don’t believe it fits te time criteria. So instead I would like to see Settlers of Catan Seafarers, or possibly Space Hulk.
Perhaps a classic game, such as Clue. I would also like another card game, like Killer Bunnies.
Boss Monster! Super fun dungeon building card game I just got. I can’t do it justice explaining, but please look it up!
They already did Dixit. But Space Cadets would be a lot of fun to watch.
Eclipse would be really cool to see, or Space Cadets.
Battle at Kemble’s Cascade, a great board game adaption of video Scifi game shoot em up games. Plays 2-5 players, approximately 75 minutes play.
Room 25. You’ve heard of the movie(s) Cube? Where total strangers wake up in a cube formed room and try to get out of a facility of such rooms, with deadly trapped rooms etc. Where you don’t know who is a friend and who is a betrayer… This is a game version of this. Really fun, plays with up to 6 players and under 90 minutes, usually under 60 minutes. Take Resistance and add more flavor and gameplay, this is it!
Boss Monster, a 2-4 player game where you play the boss monster, like Bowser in the Mario brothers games. Really much fun.
Euphoria: Build a better dystopia. A great 2-6 player worker placement game set in a dystopian future, with tongue-in-cheek humor and easy to learn. Plays in about 60 minutes.
DuCo, a card tile game where you try to match colors and shapes. A really fun filler game with potential for tournaments.
Crows, a 2-4 player game where you try to attract crows with shiny objects.
+1 to Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game (from Plaid Hat Games)
Tokaido, Boss Monster, Smallworld and Love Letter come to mind.
Second Tokaido
Sentinels of the Multiverse works well with 4 players and all the cardboard punch outs to track health, buffs, etc makes it visually interesting for a card game.
You should take a look at Villainous Vikings, designed by Jeremy Stoltzfus and produced by Victory Point Games. To start with, it is a great game that fits all your criteria. I suggest you check it out on BoardGameGeek and make sure you look at the pictures. The Viking longboats are amazing, a sort of artisan high tech meets old tech.
Victory Point Games is a small company that produces an amazing array of games in house. You read that right, from concept to finished product they do it all, with no boats from China. Villainous Vikings is a great game, with beautiful artistic design from a company that rocks.
Worth mentioning, I am not affiliated with Victory Point Games in any way. However, I would love to produce a game with them if an opportunity ever presented itself.

“James Ernest’s Totally Renamed Spy Game” (formerly known as “Before I KIll You, Mr. Bond”) by Cheapass Games
Each player is a super-villain trying to blow up their opponents’ fortress, while stopping the other players’ spies by taunting them before their imminent demise. Unless the spy has just the right comeback and escapes, blowing up your secret lair in the process.
“Damage Report” by Break From Reality Games
Players work together to repair their spaceship before it explodes. Random incoming damage every 3 minutes. Scenarios allow from 2-6 players,
“Articulate!” by Drumond Park
Describe a word for your teammate(s) to guess without using the word. Then do that as many times as you can in 15 seconds. First team around the board wins.
“Shadows Over Camelot” by Days of Wonder
King Arthur and Co, Pty, Ltd. combine forces to defeat evil. Unless one of them is a dirty traitor (don’t trust the redhead!!)
“7 Wonders” by Repos Production
4-players is just where 7 Wonders starts to get interesting as not all the materials are available to everyone.
And the obligatory +1 for the ‘TableTop After Dark’ episode of “Cards Against Humanity” by Cards Against Humanity, LLC
Senji, Kemet, Heroes Wanted, King of New York, Five Tribes, and Dead of Winter. Any of these would be great.
Short Order Heroes
Not so much a game suggestion, but I made a pair of TableTop themed leather dice cups that I thought you might like. Think of them as a perk for you. Please have a look.

Congrats again on season three.
All the best.
Play, my game =) Goblin Legion
Heroes Wanted would be fun, is silly, and very colorful.
Red Dragon Inn has randomness, is silly, and has a good amount of luck.
Cutthroat Caverns would be pretty decent as well, for many of the same reasons above.
Since you already did Last Night on Earth how about Invasion from Outer Space, same rules set but instead of zombies vs a small town it’s Martians vs Carnies.
Finally, Cash and Guns. because, wacky fun and ailly reactions.

Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/71721/space-hulk-death-angel-card-game)
It’s a cooperative card game version of the classic Warhammer 40K board game Space Hulk Board, where a bunch of Space Marines shoot there way through hordes of Genestealers.
Although it’s a card game, it plays more like a board game.
Each player gets a team of two Marines, and three action cards (move, support, attack) with special abilities for each team. The action cards always stay in the players’ hands, so they are never discareded. The Marines are shuffled, put down in a line, starting room interior and two piles of alien cards are put down.
Then each turn Marines act, Aliens attack, an event is drawn. If one alien draw pile is empty, the Marines advance to the next room.
The goal is to reach the final room and solve the challenge there.
Rooms are randomized, there are three possibilities for each location inside the Space Hulk, so you can’t know for sure what’s to come.
The cards feature clear symbolism, once you know the rules, the cards tell you everything you need to know. The designs on the cards are gore-free (as far as I remember).
The game is pretty tough, so you will probably be crushed, I played it a lot and won less than half of my games, maybe around one third.
It plays well with four player, usually takes up between 30min and 1hour (you never know when you will die).
It is a high luck and moderate strategy game. Due to the high uncertainty you usually play from one turn to another, so it’s relatively easy for new players to come up with good ideas.
The main downside is that it has player elimination. It fits the scenario, but some bad luck with the dice and your team is gone. Due to the cooperative nature of the game, players can still strategize, so it’s not as bad as in other games, but it’s still bad. And frankly, I rarely saw all teams reach the final encounter…
Still, it’s a fun and relentless coop game.
Some of looney labs’ games. FLUXX, Ice tower based games
I’m not sure if anyone has suggested it yet, but my family found Scotland Yard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland_Yard_(board_game) ) to be a good game for playing with people of differing ages. I know that the game reviews say 45 minutes, but we usually played a game under 30 minutes and the rules are easy enough that my daughter fell in love with the game at age 8, while playing it with my mother (who was rather competitive), and insisted on having her own copy of it in her 20s. We had the house rule that whoever found Mr. X in one game, had to be Mr. X in the following game.
Firefly – gale force 9 – because it is firefly.
Boss Monster.
Munchkin Quest
Lady Alice
Zombies Keep Out
Heroes Wanted
Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre
Ascension
Whacky Wit can be played be up to 5 people (agreed, two is the best setting š the craftsmanship is plain awesome and it is easily explained http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/147144/whacky-wit
Err, forgot the publisher: It’s published by Fantasy Flight Games.
Asmodee’s Takenoko!! It’s fun. Has good party game strategy and girls love the cute pandas and bamboo trees! š
2nd to Galaxy Trucker by Rio Grande Games//Czech Games Edition. It’s fun, quick, and at some point virtually all planning goes out the window. Think it would be fun for the frenetic building phase.
Strain – http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/98472/strain
Hanabi – http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/98778/hanabi
I’ve never played these games by think they would be great to see –
King of New York, Pandemic: Contagion, Pandemic: The Cure
Kittens in a Blender!
Published by Redshift Games.
It is a very humorous game, and you will want to apologize to any nearby cats.
Forbidden Desert is a very visual co-op game that’s good for a range of ages, significantly different from Pandemic, and has a fun theme.
Suburbia is pretty much Sim City in competitive, board game form. It’s very visual as people build up their cities on the table and I think it would shoot pretty similar to how Alhambra did.
I’m not sure how Bohnanza would film since most strategy goes into how you arrange your hand, but it’s a really fun, lighter game that seems different from anything else y’all have done before.
Space Station by FryxGames:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/108377/space-station
Fits your criteria perfectly. Easy to teach in 5 min. 2-6 players, 15 min per player (= average 60min). Some luck, some bashing and lots of tactical considerations. Nice to look at. Different mechanics from other games.
+1 for Fluxx, althought the randomness of game length might be an issue.
Heroes Wanted pretty please!
I truthfully don’t care what games you play. I love your show and you could probably make solitaire engaging! My only issue is the lack of captions in your YouTube releases, which I need as a deaf fan. Before anyone starts attacking me and saying that it’s there already, the “CC” button currently only displays “English (Automatic Captions)” which uses real-time speech recognition to caption the dialogue. True closed captioning requires someone to physically insert the captions with the dialogue to match what is actually being spoken as opposed to what the speech recognition software thinks is being spoken. The “Automatic Captions” on YouTube is currently about as useful as condoms for the Pope.
I’ve watched every episode of TableTop up to “Lords of Waterdeep” (S02E10), as well as various other G&S shows (“Space Janitors,” “Co-Optitude,” all of “The Guild” before it was cancelled, etc.) when whoever was doing captions suddenly just stopped (I believe around October 2013) completely across the board. I know someone said G&S wasn’t doing the captions at the time and it was being done by someone else, but it would be truly amazing if they could bring on a captioner for their own shows. It would show G&S cares about all of their fans and not just those who can hear, not to mention get them ahead of the game where the FCC is concerned, as they’ve been tightening the legislation on CC requirements to include online web series as well.
Like I said, I’m a huge fan and I thoroughly enjoy the shows I’ve been able to watch, but it would truly suck to have to wait until the DVD release for every show I enjoy because that can take months or even years (if they ever actually come out; we’re still waiting!)…
Honestly, anything you play is great. I love simply finding out new tabletop games to play with my friends and family through Tabletop. But may I be so bold to suggest a Firefly themed episode, where some of the cast come to play? That will warm my Browncoat heart.
I recommend Quantum. It’s an abstract area control game themed in space. Easy to learn, beautiful art, simple yet clever game mechanic that lead to a game that takes 45-60 minutes.
How about Puerto Rico? One of the first games our group played that we always find ourselves coming back to from time to time. Always fun yet challenging.
I feel like a lot of people posting aren’t TT fans, there are a lot of posts for games that have been played!
Wil, I saw a picture of you at the Plaid Hat Games booth at Gen Con with a copy of Dead of Winter. I think that would make a fantastic TableTop episode!
I agree with the poster who mentioned stacking the deck to keep it more family-friendly.
Heroes Wanted by Action Phase games. Can be Hilarious.
Power Grid. I’ve never played a game that took more than 90 minutes but maybe we play fast.
Jupiter Rescue looks like a fun Co-op.
Sail to India by AEG
Steam Park by Iello
Lancaster by Queen Games
Dead of Winter by Plaid Hat Games!!!
Dead of Winter or Mice and Mystics…both by Plaid Hat Games! You’ve never played anything like them…Dead of Winter uses “crossroad” cards, basically an if/then scenario! Mice and Mystics uses beautiful art to tell an awesome story of Mice to Men who have a plan to overthrow the wicked Queen who poisoned their King!
Heroes Wantes is a blast, very fun story.
Flapjacks and Sasquatch is another fun one, lots of back stabbing.
Both are easy to teach and have good themes.
I also like Trains, and Coup as well as Dead of Winter.
Heroes Wanted by Action Phase Games fits the bill. Even of you don’t play it for the show, check it out
+1 for Dead of Winter. It will be entertaining to watch the decisions help unfold the story.
+1 for Seasons. It is a beautiful and colourful game
Shadowrift is another fun multiplayer coop game.
Dead of Winter. It is a fun, survival strategy game with an awesome game mechanic.
DEAD OF WINTER…..great thematic game, lots of tension and some betrayal. It actually lends itself to a show like tabletop I think
Cosmic Encounter from FFG because it involves a lot of socializing and backstabbing and the gameplay can be wildly different based on what races are selected.
Wizwar also by FFG because of all the weirdness the magic system can lead to while you kill your friends.
Dead of Winter by Plaid Hat Games because everyone works together to survive while also working towards their own secret goals, which would be great for the format of the show.
