Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
Zombicide – Guillotine Games, Because it’s a great strategy game with a lot of fun in each of his turns
Descent second edition- Fantasy Flight Games, Because Dungeon Craw games has a lot of fun by killing goblins and fight agains dragons
Summoner Wars – Plaid Hat, It is a fast and funny game
Dungeons and Dragons the board game (Legend of Drizzit, Wrath of Ashardalon or Castle of Ravenloft) – Wizard of the coast – because it is a game that’s look like the Dungoen and Dragons, but without the roleplay
defenders of the realm – Eagle Games – because you already played Pandemic, and they are pretty much the same, but with more luck and abilities
Eldritch Horror/Arkham Horror/Mansion of madness – Fantasy Flight Games, They are great games and a I think you didn’t played any of them until now
Zombicide
Angry Sheep(very fast plays like zombie dice)
zombies!!!
Boss Monster
Battletech
Machi Koro from IDW! I was able to play a demo of it at ComicCon and it was easy to pick up, had a fair amount of strategy for a dice game, and had a great overall look and feel. I can’t wait till it comes out!
EPIC SPELL WARS OF THE BATTLE WIZARDS: DUEL AT MT. SKULLZFYRE – Fast card game by Cryptozoic, a single round can take 15 minutes, and a full game less than an hour. Also, with some deck tweaking a single round can be a full game. It has simple rules that are expanded by the cards themselves and has as a very Heavy Metal / Adventure Time aesthetic. It lends itself to clever word play, dramatic voices, and goofy stories.
Zombicide
Made by Guillotine Games
IT is a great game and it can play up to 6 players and has games that can last a hour to 90 minutes. I believe the rules and the game it self can be explained with the five minutes you need.
You should really play GUBS – A Game of Wit and Luck by Cole Medeiros (produced by Gamewright)
I love that game, yes!! Please play GUBS.
You need to do Cosmic Encounter the game that has repeatedly won best game awards. Also Wizwar for
sheer insanity.
Zombicide would be very good indeed!
Zombicide
Zombicide!
Why not try Lamp Light Games upcoming release, Space Junk?
http://lamplightgames.org/space-junk/
Tales of The Arabian Nights by Z-Man games- It is a story telling game that has many hilarious moments, has little to no skill involved and is basically a choose your own adventure with a bit of randomness thrown in with the use of some dice.
Another day of some short games, possibly with more people. Coup (Indie Board and Card Games), Bang (DV Giochi), Space Cadets Dice Duel (Stronghold Games). The first two are fun elimination games based on roles and are bluffing games. Dice Duels is a fun team vs team game that is just pure chaos as it is pure use of a dice in a game without turns.
Zombicide by Guillotine Games- This fits your requirements perfectly. It has some strategic thought involved as you out maneuver zombies to get objectives while having so much randomness involved that anyone could lose. One of the simpler campaigns can be finished in 60 minutes. It is a fun team based game that can be customized and expanded in so many ways. (If you are to only play with one version/box I would suggest Prison Outbreak.)
Garden Dice – balance of luck and strategy, family-friendly (has variant rules for harder-core gaming vs playing with kids). Great gateway game.
Tokaido – because it’s beautiful and is competitive in a totally different way.
If you do the multiple short games episode again, consider The Little Prince, Make me a Planet. Also family-friendly and good touch point for literary geeks.
Mice & Mystics and/or Dead of Winter (Plaid Hat Games)
Both I think would be great on your show.
Galaxy Trucker (Czech Games) I think would be another great game for TT.
Can’t wait for next season!
Stupiduel!
Please play the ridiculous, sensational, and extraordinarily amusing game of Stupiduel! On top of all of that, it’s educational too!
What other game will let you trap your friends with 10,000 radioactive garden gnomes, or defend yourself with a gigantic ravenous chicken, yet (despite these examples) remain so versatile that every conflict and resolution is unique*!?
And did I say educational? Why, yes I did! Stupiduel teaches storytelling, planning, problem solving, and vocabulary. It improves verbal communication, promotes logical and lateral thinking, lengthens the attention span, and increases one’s ability to focus under pressure. Stupiduel is the kind of game that can leave a player pondering a puzzling challenge for days, and telling of their victories (or failures) for years.
On top of that, Stupiduel remains extremely accessible. Stupiduel can be played by any group – adults, teens, kids, girls, boys – all at the same table using their own experiences and perspectives to trounce their opponents (or thwart their plans)!
Did I mention it’s funny, too? Not “we put jokes on the cards the new guy giggles once or twice at” funny, but “everyone in the room is smiling, groaning, giggling and wisecracking, and a week later you can drop a key phrase and get everyone giggling again” funny!

PS: We will gladly send you a copy of the game, just so you have it to look at, if its not too late.
You really have to play ZOMBICIDE!!!
Best Game in Years!
Abyss from Asmodee US/Bombyx, gorgeous artwork, simple rules, lots of luck and strategy.
Kingdoms from Fantasy Flight Games, really simple games with a lot of math but with luck of draw, nice castles figs
7 Wonders from Repos Prod, really nice draft card games with building majestic wonders in the Antiquity
Council of Verona!
FRAG by Steve Jackson Games: Of all of the First Person Shooter board games that I’ve tried (including the Halo board game) this one most captures the feel of the video game genre. Lava pits, weapons galore…there are even Hack cards that let players temporarily change the rules of the game. And, of course, it’s got that signature SJG design aesthetic and polish. The FTW expansion adds even more goodies.
Kill Doctor Lucky: This was originally a Cheapass Games publication. Titanic did a beautiful version with a color, heavy stock board and wooden playing pieces (this is the version I have). I believe that Paizo now publishes it, but using the same design as the Titanic version. This game is Clue’s spiritual opposite, in that all of the players are trying to be the one to kill the titular doctor in his estate, while also tripping up the other players’ attempts. I’ve played this game with children as young as 10 and we were all laughing as we made one failed homicide attempt after another. The expansion “…and His Little Dog Too” adds even more complexity.
Dungeon! by Wizards of the Coast: The original was published by TSR over 3 decades ago, but WotC did an update of the game during the 4e era. It’s a dungeon crawl board game and is just a classic.
If you do another multi-game show where you play losts of small, fast games I would love to see Cheapass Games showcased.
Please don’t do any more out-of-print games. That’s just cruel.
Kingsburg. Just complex enough to be interesting, but easy to learn, and with luck and strategy in equal measure.

Quack in the Box (“the fun game of medical malpractice!”) is a fast card game in which all players are unscrupulous doctors trying to earn as much money as they can by inflicting – er, prescribing – profitable treatments on their customers while trying not to completely kill the patients.
The game is hilarious, works with 2-6 players, doesn’t take too long to play…and best of all would give you guys an excuse to resurrect Doctor Hannah!
Here’s a review of the game, which I had discovered it at PAX East just as this reviewer apparently did:

Zombicide! Keeping in mind that season threes kickstarter has already come and gone, but should be in some of our excited little hands by February. I love this game, but the addons make it so much better! Who doesn’t love different types of zombies!!!
Ooh, and Mice and Mystics! Its good fun too.
Maybe an episode dedicated to multiple pocket games, similar to Chris Handy’s Pack O Game. They should be available by the fall, or I’m sure with Wil’s clout he could get a couple before full release!
Zombicide!
Seasons! Great game! Simple concept!
A Touch Of Evil
Invasion from Outer Space
Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery
Cards Against Humanity
Galaxy Trucker

Dead of Winter by Plaid Hat Games.
Best game of 2014!
Discworld Ankh-Morpork from Mayfair games. It’s four player, it plays in 60 mins. (often less), It has beautiful artwork on the board and on the cards, plus the rules are dead simple. Since it works off cards there’s a good amount of luck and strategy. It fits all of your criteria.
Villainous Vikings by Victory Point Games
* plays in ~60 minutes
* supports 2-4 players, is best with 4 (and it scales- it takes the same amount of time with 4 as it does with 2)
* it can be explained in 5 minutes
* it’s dynamic and interactive, and it has plenty of randomness
* has unique artwork
Bioshock Infinite: Siege of Columbia by Plaid Hat Games
* plays in 60-90 minutes
* supports 2 or 4 players
* it can be explained in 5 minutes
* is based on the awesome pc game and it has that same stunning artistic and narrative aesthetic
* has a lot of interaction, dice rolling and random events, and something might happen at any moment to rewrite the entire board, it’s pretty crazy
My wife and I just got finished watching all episodes of The Wil Wheaton Project. I’d been meaning to check it out since first hearing about it on Reddit, but just hadn’t found the time until a recent vacation. Came here to see why there wasn’t a recent episode and found this post. I hope they have the foresight to order more episodes. We needed a show like this out there!
Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project: Absolutely yes. I didn’t miss an episode.
Shinobi Clans!
