What would you like to see us play on Tabletop Season Three?

Anonymous asked:

Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.

So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.

We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.

Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.

What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?

Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:

  1. Plays well with 4 people.
  2. Plays in under 90 minutes.

  3. Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.

  4. Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.

  5. Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.

  6. Is not something we’ve played before.

I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

King of New York has enough new mechanics to be worth playing, I think. Also I would like to see an actual episode of Rampage, but understand that may be tough due to the difficulty in filming it.

I would love to see …

    Coup,
    Marvel Legendary,
    Sentinels of the multiverse,
    Infiltration,
    Eldritch Horror,
    Descent- Journeys in the Dark,
    Blood Bowl team manager,
    Hanabi,

played on Tabletop. I play those often with my friends, and also recommend those games to customers at my work place (a games store)

Please please please do a Retro game – The Awful Green Things from Outer Space. It is an old TSR game from the late 70’s / early 80’s. It is a fun and fantastic game – you space ship has been invaded by Awful Green Things!!! You run around the ship trying out different weapons on them. Since weapons effects are randomly assigned every game you never know if that laser beam will destroy the monsters, shrink them, make them grow, etc.You could have two people play the crew and two people play the monsters. Please keep playing games and doing Tabletop Wil along with all the other creative acts you perform every day of your life. You’re an inspiration to so many of us.

Race to Adventure (http://www.evilhat.com/home/race-to-adventure-2/) is a super fun game my brother introduced me to. Plays great with four people. And it’s different every time you play it because the board gets set up differently every time you play. Involves a good deal of strategy as well as a little luck to make sure you get what you need! Very easy to explain and get the hang of. You’d love it!!!

Race to Adventure would fit perfectly on the tabletop. I could see the graphics guys loving this game too because there is so much art to work with since they can pull art from Spirit of the Century too.

May I recommend Hot Tin Roof (Mayfair) and Zombies Keep Out (Privateer Press). The first involves cats and the second is a cooperative where you have to make some tough decisions without letting your teammates know your options on the card you draw to choose actions from. Mice and Mystics is a nice mix of board game and RPG.

Red November, Epic Spell-wars, Castles of Burgundy, and maybe Key flower? (although I’m unsure about the time limit constraint).

Table Top has introduced me to so many awesome games I’m excited for season 3 no matter what the games played end up being.

Cosmic Encounter! It might run a little long, but few games are as good at getting their players visibly excited. They may be joyful, miserable, magnanimous, or vindictive, but they’ll be emoting up a hell of a lot of good television.

Waggle Dance by Grublin Games, recently funded on kickstarter and due in November, but they definitely have prototypes as I got to play it at a UK board game expo. Great fun, but maybe a little more on the strategy side than luck even though more than 70 dice are used. All about expanding your hive of bees and collecting pollen. So much fun to play and deserving of wider exposure.

My tabletop group really like to play “Strange Synergy” from Steve Jackson Games. It’s out of print, but I think it’s worth hunting down a copy.

Each player is dealt 9 cards which are superhero powers. You then try to arrange them into 3 superheroes which can help you beat the other players. To avoid duds, we sometimes deal 12 cards per player, only to keep 9. The game is then a capture-the-flag deal with your heroes moving around on a board… although we usually forgo the flag and just eliminate each other. 😉

Kill Doctor Lucky and/or Unexploded Cow by Cheapass Games.

While we haven’t played Unexploded Cow (yet), we love Kill Doctor Lucky because card games are super portable, so we take them on road trips. Then we get to share them with the people we’re going to visit. Doctor Lucky has whitty explanations of the weapon, motive, and oppotunity, and it’s quick to learn.

If you’re willing to play something out of print, I’ve been dying to see a group play Graverobbers from Outer Space, especially since seeing how Gloom played out. (Or any of the related games.) Unfortunately Z-Man took it out of print after they were acquired.

It’s a great game where each player is attempting to create the best (worst) B-movie. Different versions cover different types of movies.

Citadels would be a lot of fun to see on the show. I recently tried it out, and there’s a lot of great player interactions based on the character roles. It’s easy to learn, but there’s a lot of possible strategies to use when playing.

7 Wonders is also pretty fun, especially with a large group, although player interaction might be somewhat limited (since you basically just interact with the people next to you).

Dominion is another classic one. I usually play with a random set of cards, but for Tabletop, it might work better if you pick out a specific set ahead of time that has good interactions between players. Quarriors! is also a fantastic Dominion-like game that is not as well known. It uses dice instead of cards, so it’s pretty different from other Dominion-style games.

If you do another episode with two or three shorter games, 6 Nimmt! and No Thanks! are really fun. We play these fairly regularly between longer games in my local game group.

Looking forward to season 3, Wil!

Do a card themed show, with several games that may not be 90 minutes long, but easy to explain and play:
    1) Flapjack’s and Sasquatches: An easy 2-8 player game that is super creative, fun, and well thought out.
    2) Star Realms: one of my favorite 2 player games at GenCon this year. Great rules, excellent art, and streamlined play.
    3) Iron and Ale: quite possibly the best Kickstarter I’ve ever backed. This game is amazing! Challenge your friends to a face-slapping contest, then bet whether they will go thru with it, arm wrestle for points, push-up competition, etc. Very well received by my entire gaming group!

Those are my picks. Love the show!

“Damage Report” from Break from Reality games is a really fun game. It might be hard to convey in the show’s format since it isn’t turn-based, all players actually play at the same time according to their own timer. It gets super chaotic but it’s great fun!

I think it would be especially great if you could get guests from Star Trek to play on that episode. 😉

Ca$h ‘n Gun$: Great table top game, super fast to explain, and its a fast paced game, fits all your criteria so well, I needed to double check to see that you didn’t already play it. it is a 4-6 player game, that does get better the more you have playing.

Ginkgopolis, which looked intriguing and potentially fun, but we had a hard time figuring out the game play.

Also, seconding Sentinels of the Multiverse. My gaming group loves that game. Great replayability, too, especialy with all the expansions.

Guest suggestions you ask? How about some of those guys from the Dice Tower Network or those guys from Shut up and Sit down (have you seen them? Really funny!)
