What would you like to see us play on Tabletop Season Three?

Anonymous asked:

Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.

So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.

We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.

Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.

What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?

Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:

  1. Plays well with 4 people.
  2. Plays in under 90 minutes.

  3. Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.

  4. Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.

  5. Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.

  6. Is not something we’ve played before.

I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Splendor by Space Cowboys – This one has been a real hit in my game group. It is quick and easy to play and so far seems to have enough variety to play over and over.

Steam by Mayfair Games – It’s another take on the train game genre. Kind of a cross between the crayon type games like Empire Builder where you build your routes and Ticket to Ride.

I’d love to see Forbidden Desert played. Maybe you can finally get a win against one of Matt Leacock’s cooperative games? (A girl can dream, anyway!) It has similar length, luck, complexity, and quality artwork to its older sibling Forbidden Island, but still manages to be unique.

I definitely agree with others that Coup would work well and be entertaining. As the thematic sequel to Resistance, it would be great for Table Top! It also might pair well with Mascarade and Skull & Roses for a bluffing episode, but that’s a lot of face-down, hidden artwork all at once.

Space Cadets could bring a bit of the Artemis experience to the show in board game form. The audience doesn’t necessarily need a complete explanation of each station, so the rules time limit might be tricky, but maybe possible?

      Until season 3…Play more games!

For season 3 I have some suggestions:

-Jamaica: A fun, dice selection racing game. Loads of pirate themed fun.

-Imperial settlers: a new Gen Con game about building up your specific civilization. Play as Romans, barbarians, Egyptians, or the Japanese to build your world and destroy someone else’s. Luck is based on the card draw from either deck.

-Kingsburg (needs the expansion for more fun/improvements): dice roll/selection to collect the most VP through buildings, and defeating the Winter threat every year. Great game.

-Tokaido: A layed-back journey game in which you travel from Kyoto to Tokyo and the more “sightseeing” you do, the more likely of a chance you have to win. On top of that, gorgeous artwork. Expansion makes it fell more “gamer” like, base game is plenty of fun for non-gamer guests.

-Lifeboats: a cutthroat negotiation game where all you have to offer to the other players is “not me?” Lots of fun, and jokes when booting other players characters.

-Libertalia: A pirate themed simultaneous role selection game. Dripping with theme and fun.

-Last Will: A game about trying to get rid of your money as soon and as fast as possible. Has the same theme as the movie “Brewster’s Millions.” Great game.

-Splendor: A fun 30 minute engine building game. Uses poker chips to purchase cards with points/gems in them. Then using those cards to make other cards cheaper to purchase. Luck is based on the card draw.

-Forbidden Island/ Forbidden Desert: pandemic game feel in which you all work together to gets pieces for a machine to leave the desert, or race against the incoming waters on an island.

-Defenders of the Realm: A fantasy themed co-op (somewhat Pandemic feel) to conquer lands and destroy villains together. Each player has their own unique character. Essentially a 90 minute RPG session of sorts. Great fun and theme. Board also looks great.

I guess that’s more than some. Oh well, enjoy! Btw, great work on TWWP (The Wil Wheaton Project). Fingers crossed for season 2.

Can’t wait for Season 3 of Tabletop!

Some great games already mentioned. I would like through out there. Valley of the Kings. A great little deck builder that the cards you buy are useful as long as they are in your deck. But the only to score points is by placing them in your tomb. They are no longer I’m your deck and can’t be played.

Another suggestion would be Sail to India. A fun, quick, trade, sailing, worker placement micro game.

  15. Sterling Lucas McAtee says:
    25 August, 2014 at 6:50 pm

Flash Point. If you did Pandemic, you can do Flash Point, although it’s more likely to kick your ass than Pandemic.

Galaxy Trucker. Vlaada’s games are a bit rule heavy, but if one person knows all the rules and gimmicks already it’s usually quick to explain, plus the chaos of building the ships.

Rampage. Counting up the scores may be a mess, but the ways you destroy the board are perfect for Tabletop’s style.

Comedy option: Space Alert. Fills everything except for the rules explanation, unless all you want to do is explain how the cards work and watch the explosion.

This is a shameless plug, but I just published my third game: Welcome Minions! It only requires a deck of cards, and some imagination. Inspired by Everyone is John and Fiasco. You play as a group of bumbling Minions trying to accomplish the most simple of tasks. The problem is that only one Minion can lead the group at a time….and you had better make sure it’s you!

Oh man oh man! Dreams do come true. Innnputtttt; In order of how well I think they’d work on the show:

    ♄ Citadels/or Mascarade
    ♄ Cash n’ Guns
    ♄ Coup
    ♄ Splendor
    ♄ Machi Koro
    ♄ Quantum
    ♄ Cosmic Encounter
    ♄ Descent (Doesn’t match the criteria… but… I love it?)

Vlaada Chvatil’s Galaxy Trucker by Rio Grande games is a good’un, playtime anything from 15 minutes upwards depending on how many successive rounds you do.

Lots of colourful pieces, starts with manic timed planning and then invariably ends with either glory or despair as all your planning goes awry at the luck of the cards and meteor rolls.

I actually prefer it without the expansions as it’s a nice opener like that.

Secondly, I know you’ve done resistance, but The Coup is too good for banter to not air. I’m the Duke, and so is my wife!

Battlestar Galactica… 90 minutes may be a stretch if you get heavily into the dialog aspect of the game, but it’s awesome all the same.

Great Dalmuti – I’d love to see more people playing this easy to learn, fun game. Who is destined to become The Great Dalmuti? It’s also a great game for groups.

Keyflower – fun game, but it might not hit the requirement of explaining in 5 minutes, so that might be a challenge–the gauntlet has been thrown!

Cosmic Encounter (the proper Mayfair version, please) can definitely be paid in that time if you play single power and skip the complications of the expansion set.

    Killer Bunnies
Bang! (you may want 5 or 6 people instead of 4, but 5 isn’t unheard of on TableTop)
Balderdash (it’s trivia so obscure that NOBDOY knows the answer, making it a good cross between Say Anything and Trivial Pursuit)

  39. John says:

Sheriff of Nottingham by Arcane Wonders! It is funny, fun, easy to explain, and it looks great.

    “Garden Dice” by Meridae Games.
This is a deceptively smart game. It’s very easy to explain and seems straight forward, then you realize how sneaky and strategic it can be. Dice determine how much each player has to spend on resources which adds a twist of luck to the mix. This combination of elements makes it great for families or gaming groups.
The artwork is beautiful and playful. The color palette will really show well on camera.

Unexploded Cows – Cheapass Games, it’s just silly fun, one of those short games with a silly premise. you can play tactically but there is an element of luck.

Kill Doctor Lucky (and his little dog too) – Also Cheapass Games. My group love this game as you can play with up to 7 easily but 4 is fine too. this is great as it gets quite tense when you think the end is coming and yet it can happen really quickly also.

Red Dragon Inn – Slugfest Games. This can take along time with large numbers of players but 4 should be fine. I have all the expansions so we can play with up to 20 (we don’t) but all different characters with different strengths and weaknesses.

    Zendo

    1) Guillotime
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillotine_%28game%29
    http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/116/guillotine
    – great art
    – munchkin humor in the theme
    – lite strategy
    – fairly predictible duration

    2) Wooly Bully
    http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3243/wooly-bully
    – tile based area control game
    – has a “pocket card” mechanic – you don’t know which color each oponent is playing at the start of the game which is cool

    3) Kingdom builder
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Builder
    http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/107529/kingdom-builder
    – lots of variation, permutation of victory conditions & rules
    – very fixed duration

  46. Aaron Hershkowitz says:

I really adore Race for the Galaxy, but I’m not sure how well it would work for TableTop, since there’s very little physically on the table at the beginning of the game, the graphical design is very pretty but card-sized, and there’s relatively little direct player-player interaction as compared to many games.

I think Rattus would be great, though! It’s made for 4 players, looks gorgeous, is simple enough for new gamers to pick up very quickly, plays in well under 90 minutes, and is about the black plague!

PIX – from Asmodee – Pictionary with pixel art.
Sentinels of the Multiverse – from Greater Than Games – Co-Op game with superheroes and supervillians
Legendary – from Upper Deck – Deckbuilder with the Marvel license
Salmon Run – Gryphon Games – Deckbuilder / racing game with cute figures and modular maps.
Flash Point – Indie Boards and Games – Co-Op game of fighting fires and rescuing civilians
Quarriors – WIZKIDS – Deckbuilding with dice. Dicebuilding game with pretty dice.
Ascension – Stoneblade Entertainment – Deckbuilding with high quality art.
Machine of Death – Bearstache – Super fun like Once Upon a Time, but you get to be assassins.
Power Grid – Rio Grande – Ticket to Ride with electricity and auctions
Seasons – 4 player battle with magic and mages
Labyrinth – Ravensburger Games – Collect the treasures in a shifting maze.
Quantum – Fun Forge – Area control with dice battles.

  49. Santos L Halper says:
    25 August, 2014 at 7:17 pm

Rampage aka Terror in Meeple City – I’m not a fan of the game but it could be fun to watch.
Infiltration – press your luck game which I think offers equal amounts of strategy and luck.
K2 – Another press your luck game. Although there is a bit of a player elimination element toward the end when people start dying on the mountain-side.
Flash Point Fire Rescue – cooperative game similar, in a sense, to Pandemic. Only… different.
Citadels – Tableau building/role selection game. Lots of “OOOOOOHHHH!!” moments when you correctly or incorrectly guess what someone was planning and either disrupt or fail to disrupt their plans.
Letters from Whitechapel or alternately Scotland Yard – 1 vs Many game where the 1 doesn’t have a pawn and instead writes down their movements on a piece of paper. I think maybe Scotland Yard might be the better choice since “Mr X” has to place his pawn on the table periodically so the cops and hone in on him.
