Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
Coup
Ca$h ‘n Guns
Red Dragon Inn
Heroes Wanted
Agents of Smersh
and a long shot… Pathfinder Adventure Card Game?
Legacy: Gears of Time would make for a pretty good episode. It is from Minnesota based publisher Floodgate Games.
One of our family favorites is Guillotine by Wizards of the Coast. It’s a hit from the 9 year old all the way up to the 76 year old.
Zombiecide, Firefly the card game, Roborally
Snake Oil
Survive Escape From Atlantis (Stronghold games)
Mice and Mystics (Plaid Hat Games)
Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot
Saboteur 2
Splendor is no heavier than TTR offering only 4 choices to pick from on your turn. It plays quickly, scales well to 4, and is very quick to explain. It’s 30 min filler to light weight 45 min depending on your group. It has good color usage and quality components that should read well on camera. Pro tip: force players to keep chips in 2 rows of 5 to prevent accidently acquiring more chips than permitted. Hand limit is 10.
Machi Koro hits all the criteria
Discworld: Ankh-Morpork. Even if you’re not a fan of the excellent Discworld books by Terry Pratchett(which you totally should be), Ankh-Morpork is easy to learn and great fun to play.
Keyflower. It has auctions, tile placement, lots of coloured meeples and cute art. It’s a fast and mean worker placement game that will film well.
I’d love to see Rather Dashing Games’ Four Taverns, Forbidden Desert, and Munchkin Quest
+1 for Forbidden Desert!
I am surprised nobody mentioned Camel Up! It won the Spiel des Jahres. Its a betting game based on camels that can stack when they move.
Zombies!!! You can adjust the time of the game by moving the helipad (game finisher) closer to the top of the map tiles. It’s easy to learn, has dice for luck and strategy.
Wiz War: A classic that was just updated and re-released.
Talisman: Roleplaying, dice, strategy and can be played quickly depending on how you do the ending.

I know you’ve said numerous times that you “can’t” play Rampage (AKA Terror in Meeple City) on Tabletop due to…reasons…but come on! We have the technology. WE PUT A MAN ON THE MOON FOR PETE’S SAKE!
Defenders of the Realm FTW!
Zombie 15′ by IELLO might be a good option, each session only takes 15 minutes so you could string together several scenarios (it has a lengthy, structured campaign) for an episode. It’s designed for 4 players and it’s nice and colourful.
My only concern is that with the strict 15 minute thing for each session that it might get a bit frantic for filming it and giving opportunities for discussion during the episode. Though you could edit down each session and have talking between scenarios.
Kickstarter (long finished, retail copies now coming out): http://www.iellogames.com/Zombie15.html
Red Dragon Inn.
As a group of adventures coming back with money and andrenaline all pumped up you proceed to drink, gamble, and fight till there is one adventures left standing. There are some great expansions where you can play an Orc Palidin, an annoying Bard, or even a magicians pet rabbit named Pooky who’s mood will get fouler and fouler till he becomes psychotic and with the right card, can lay waste to your opponents.
I think it would be cool to do one show a season that would give some love to an unpublished game. Give someone that is out there trying to get published a chance to reach a wide audience with a game they’re designing. Obviously it’d have to be something pretty close to published and you don’t want to be play testing things, plus you want something that will probably be pretty fun and not a dud, but it would be cool to devote one show a season to the underdogs.
Heroes wanted is a lot of fun with the quirks.
Firefly with Nathan Fillion….please….
CV is a dice rolling career game that tells a wonderful story
Coup would be a fantastic game, but you’d probably need another game to go along with it. Maybe Timeline?
As for a longer game, what about 7 Wonders? I know it’s more of a “hmmm…” thinking game, and I don’t know what discussions you could have while the game is going on, but it is a really good game, in my opinion.
Castle Dice by Fun to Eleven Games and Forbidden Dessert the sequel, kind of, to Forbidden Island.
Mystery of the Abbey. I’d like to see what kind of questions the guests would come up with. It’s also colorful and easy to explain.
Ghost Stories – it’s beautiful, has great bits, is colorful-language-inducingly difficult, and is best with exactly four players. Also, it’s structured well for a show, it’s even got a boss fight at the end.
Hanabi – it’d be fun to watch how this game would play out, it’s all about the interactions between the players.
Munchkin Quest. The regular Munchkin episode is one of the best, and the board game adds some interesting elements.
Daniel Solis’ card games would probably work great on he show. My suggestions, in particular, would be Koi Pond and Nine Lives, which could potentially be two halves of a single episode.
Two Fantasy Flight games which I enjoy greatly: “A Game of Thrones: The Board Game” and “Eldritch Horror”.
Another vote for Mice & Mystics. Such a fantastic game!
Ruse
Run for your life, Candyman by Smirk&Dagger games
Cutthroat Caverns by Smirk&Dagger games
Flea Marketeers by Gut Bustin’ games
Redneck Life by Gut Bustin’ games
Red Dragon Inn by Slugfest Games
Sherriff of Nottingham- by Arcane Wonders… awesome company and a great game!
Given how great you guys are with story telling games (like Gloom and Once Upon a Time) I’d love to see an episode on ‘Winter Tales’ by Fantasy Flight.
Illuminati
Fluxx
Love Letters
Hanabi
RoboRally
And you said you didn’t want a game you’ve played before… but I think you really need to make an exception for a second game of Fiasco. If you use another playset it’ll be like a different game. And quite frankly I want to see John Rogers return to the show, along with like Gates McFadden, and Aldis Hodge or someone.
I would love to see a tabletop episode(s) devoted to two player games. Mr Jack, Lost Cities, Japier, Hive, etc. I think 2 player games are great quick fixes to gaming addicts; and should be showcased more. They make gaming more accessibke (/possible) on nights when its not always possible to get a group of gamers together. Or for people who don’t have large social circles…. (Points to self)
Boss Monster would be fun to see you play.
Quack in the Box, a game about unscrupulous doctors! It’s morbid and weird, but rather fun!
COSMIC ENCOUNTER! It fits so perfectly I’ve always been shocked you haven’t played it yet! š
Guillotine. Good game 4 people. Quickish. And you get to behead people (well… cards)
Revolution! A quick search to make sure you hadn’t done it brings up a 2009 post of yours where you explained it. It’s one of my favorite games and I would love to see you play it with people like Chris Hardwick.
I would recommend:
Dread Curse – a piratey game of pushing your luck and stealing and generally being sort of rude to one another
Article 27 – a game about negotiating with very little leverage, plus there is a gavel
Via Appia – dunno how well this would go on the show? but there is such a FANTASTIC little gimmick in this game. I think you’d enjoy it anyway.
I got so excited about Revolution I forgot to suggest Race for the Galaxy as well. I think the base game fits all your criteria.
Jamaica for sure.
Forbidden Desert
I would like to throw out there a game that is not generally thought of as a 4 player, Marvel Dice Masters.
We play 4 player, 2 teams, 2 players on each team. Alternate between players for moves, and team mates can block for each other, while attacks work just the same as they would in a 2 player game. Makes for a very interesting and fun way to play it.
Ugg Tect would be hilarious to watch just not sure it would fit the format. How about Galactic Emperor.
If you get a talented someone to run a game, Dread would be pretty awesome to see.

PULSE! Last year Game Chef winner, just released in English during GenCon 2014 and on sale by Indie Press Revolution.
Takes up to 2 hours, photographs amazingly well, and should be a pretty unique experience for your show.
I would really like to see another game like Dixit. Very easy to play for all levels of players, even people that can’t read.
My down and dirty party card game called “Where Wolf?” but you have never heard of it
My thoughts:
Rampage
Dead of Winter
Gravwell
Manhattan Project
The Agents
Battlestar Galactica
Freedom the Underground Railroad
I second Gravwell!
I realize these are both somewhat replays, but what about a “Munchkin Cthulhu”-“Chez Cthulhu” double feature?
I also vote for Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre. It has a kickass name (Skeletor could make a guest appearance?) The rule book is awesome (well, the story part, the rules themselves are a little mixed around in there). It is insanely easy to learn, difficult to master, and you can get totally dice-screwed. The art is one of the many epic things about this game (it is very un-PG). It has a prop that is completely unnecessary, yet you are not truly playing the game without it. There is a ton of player interaction. There is a card called “Testikill” with appropriate art (among other equally ridiculous cards). It is most definitely one of my favorite games.
Another favorite of mine is Legacy: Gears of Time by Floodgate Games. More effort to learn, but also has great artwork and handles time travel as a game concept in a very cool way. Good player interaction, but can also be bogged down by that guy who can’t make a decision. It’s a game I always recommend to experienced casual boardgamers.
Whatever you choose, please have Rothfuss back. His bearded greatness deserves more screen time.
