50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

What would you like to see us play on Tabletop Season Three?

Posted on 25 August, 2014 By Wil

Anonymous asked:

Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.

So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.

We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.

Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.

What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?

Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:

  1. Plays well with 4 people.
  2. Plays in under 90 minutes.

  3. Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.

  4. Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.

  5. Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.

  6. Is not something we’ve played before.

I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Firefly the Game. Publisher: Gale Force Nine. It’s simple to play, great fun and it feels just like the show. The theme is so strong it’s like the stilton of board games!

Well, it was played before but Lords of Waterdeep with the Expansions. If Felicia is there, you can play pick up sticks and I would watch 🙂 How about that game Caverna or Dominant Species. I have thought about those, but not sure on the time length. My all-time favorite board game is Rail Baron (1977), but it takes five hours….

You’ve said previously that it isn’t optimal for the show, but seriously.. you can make it work. Just pick a high-interaction set of cards and it’ll be entertaining. It’s THE game that got me and all of my friends into tabletop gaming, and I’m sure many others would say the same. You can do it!

‘Letters From Whitechapel’ – Someone plays Jack the Ripper and everyone else is playing the police. The gameplay is a cat and mouse around Whitechapel on a gorgeous board, as Jack moves in secret towards his hideout after a killing and everyone else tries to track him down first (there are multiple rounds so the investigators get more than one chance).

Steve Jackson has a new edition of Car Wars coming out. A simple arena duel would probably fit nicely into the show. Use pre-made cars or build off-camera and give a build summary at the start to save time there.

But aside from the shameless plug, Splendor is a great game that meets your criteria. Zombicide is good fun. The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game would certainly be more suitable to your show than the RPG.

Splendor! http://www.spacecowboys.fr/splendor/language:eng Plays great w/4 people. Fairly short (games are about 20 minutes if you know what you are doing, 60-ish if you don’t). Has a good amount of random luck in it. Quick to explain. basically the perfect Tabletop game.

Thirteen Dead End Drive! It’s Clue with a twist (or three!) You don’t know who is playing each character, you can move every character on the board, and actual death occurs. It’s a real hoot if you like that sort of puzzle game (and it can get pretty intense with the killings and such!).

Star Wars Edge of the Empire/Age of Rebellion RPG. I can run it for 2 hours with my son. You could probably run a simple scenario and edit it down to 30-45 minutes with minimal narrative loss. If you use the maps and pieces in the Beginner Game (or if you have graphic designers that could create them for you for your chosen scenario) they would look great on video. I draw and print out my own Star Wars paper miniatures for this game which look great on photographs.

I would like to see an episode or two of a bunch of classic simpler board games, fireball island, aggravation, clue, mousetrap, things like that. I would LOVE to see the game mechanics knowledgable actually playing those old things again and talking about the mechanics, what still works, what doesnt.

At least one storytelling game this season would be wonderful. They’re my favourite style of game, they’re a nice change of pace from things that are crunchier or more systems-bound, and the Fiasco episode remains, in my opinion, the best that Tabletop has ever done.

Maybe Mythender, or Baron Munchausen? Or maybe something I’ve never heard of – the important part for me is the collaborative creation of an interesting story.
