Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

I think Boss Monster would be pretty awesome.
Hero’s Wanted
Dead of Winter
Impulse
Ninja Dice.
Imperial Assault.
Five suggestions-
Gravwell: Super-easy rule base, full game takes around 20-30 minutes, gets better the more players there are. Big twists and turns, easy for people to catch up but hard to pull away.
Citadels: Card-based, but straightforward rules-wise, and a lot of action on the table, should allow people plenty to time to talk about their hands.
Splendor: Everything is out there for people to see. Simple to explain. Plenty of luck with the cards available in the market.
Kingsburg: Both easy to learn with a lot going on. Based around dice-rolling, so luck is also involved.
Tokaido: Antoine Bouza is a badass designer, so the more of his games the happier I am.
Hope this helps, Wil.
I agree with mj; any of Rather Dashing’s games would be awesome! Dwarven Miner, Four Taverns, or their new one Pirates, Ninjas, Robots, Zombies.
The Battlestar Galactica board game! Might need a two parter, but holy crap is that game good.
The Omega Virus. If you can find a copy of it.
Lets see some Dungeons & Dragons
Rather Dashing Games!! Any of there games are fun to play!
Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game
Imperial Settlers
Panamax
Ca$h ‘n Guns
Samurai Spirit
Epic Spell Wars of The Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre
Thurn and Taxis
For as long as I’m lurking these comments, I will promote every Battle Wizards game suggestion. Game is such a blast.
Ninja Burger !
Splendor. It’s a victory point purchasing game with fun layers of strategy. Plays great with four people. Renaissance gem merchants angling for the most gems.
Can we see Rather Dashing Games’s games on his show Table Top!!!!
RoboRally. Fun game, works great with 4 players, can be played in 90 minutes or less, and if planned well there’s lots of fun destroying of other players strategy for a turn.
Dungeon Fighter
Ladies and Gentlemen
Alien Frontiers
Galaxy Trucker
Cosmic Encounter
Eldritch Horror (longer than 90 but would make a nice 2 parter)
Ticket To Ride Nederlands
Kingdom Builder by Queen Games. Very good game. Quite fast, after the initial round. Very stategic, but with a bit of luck. Was Game of the Year in Germany 2012
Wooly Bully by Phillipe des Pallieres. The goal is: to put cards together in order to get the biggest flock of sheep. Was Game of the Year in France 2002
DWARVEN MINOR http://www.ratherdashinggames.com/
Any of the Rather Dashing Games…
Ca$h n’ Guns, without a doubt
Wizkids’ Pirates constructible strategy game(later “pocketmodels”). It had some great and easy naval combat and strategy. Set up balanced fleets from the factions or everyone try and defeat a wil wheaton controlled 10-masted treasure ship.
Mostly, I would just love for this game to come back in it’s entirety (the series is currently in game limbo). It was some of the most fun I’ve had (and still have on occasion) on a table top.
Gravwell

XCOM looks like it’ll be intense, though it’s a team game so may be difficult when it comes to deciding who wins…maybe vote on a MVP?
When they played Pandemic, and a few other co-ops, they did a “win as team, lose as team” thing, so they might continue along that path, if they played XCOM.
Which would be fun to see, by the way.
At GenCon, we played Run for Your Life Candyman with gingerbread man cookies and red food coloring gel. I think that would be a hilarious episode.
Talisman, Descent, Conquest of the Empire
Any group of people playing cards against humanity has the potential to be the funniest thing ever … such a twisted game!!
qwarriors deck building game with dice instead of cards
Play a classic. Cyberpunk or Carwars..
Sentinels of the Multiverse from (Greater Than Games)! Great game world, but fairly simple, the game is cooperative (so everyone definitely has a chance to win). On regular mode (not using the advanced rules for the villains) with a more basic villain and environment, it can stay under 90 minutes. I love this game because of how thorough they were in creating a comic book universe based on a series of comic books that doesn’t even exist. The cards have fun art that often incorporates characters across different decks and really gives them some extra dimension (including occasional references to other things, like Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog). The game mechanics are pretty simple to start (Play, Power, Draw), but different decks play differently, keeping it dynamic and giving each player a different role in the game.
The Stars are Right by Steve Jackson Games
I would like to see you guys attempt a speedrun of Super Mario Brothers 2. It is published by Nintendo. It’s one of my favorite games because the Princess is clearly the best character (though obviously not for all situations, that would be boring).
Warhammer 40k! It breaks most of the rules you listed, but I still want to see it. You could play with small armies!
Letters from WhiteChapel, Zombicide, Diplomacy, and Evil Baby Orphanage
Dungeon Lords!
‘Tales of the Arabian Nights’ – It is a wonderful game, perhaps on the slightly random side, but BEG you to watch this review from the hilarious guys at Shut Up & Sit Down. http://www.shutupandsitdown.com/blog/post/review-tales-arabian-nights/
If it still seems too random, ‘Agents of SMERSH’ is an over the top 70s spy game built for the same sort of gameplay but has a cooperative element reminiscent of stuff like Arkham (without taking too long).
Just a few:
-7 Wonders
-Race for the Galaxy
-Firefly the Board Game (why don’t you get Nathan Fillion on to play =))
-Maybe a few bite-sized games. Specifically Sushi Go! and Love Letter.
Twilight imperium?
I’d love to see a crossover with Spellslingers where you have Shaun back and do a 4 player game of Commander (read: mode designed for fun multiplayer).
You could also do a retro series with Monopoly, Sorry, etc. or a kids one with something like Candy Land
Would love to see you play either Hero Quest or X-Men Alert!
I also vote for Trains. We haven’t seen a deck builder on TableTop yet and Trains has the visual board aspect compared to most others. Also something like Suburbia or Libertalia or SteamPark would be great choices too!
City of Horror!!
Anything by Rather Dashing Games!
Galaxy trucker? Robo Rally?
Munchkin Chthulu
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Dwarven Miner, Four Taverns, or Pirates Ninjas Robots & Zombies
Defenders of the Realm.
Citadels
Killer Bunnies
Bang (this has a lot of strategy though)
Werewolves of Millers Hollow by Asmodee
A fun “After Dark” special with Cards Against Humanity
I have copies of many games, I’m willing to donate or share them in exchange for a guest spot. 🙂
