Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Cosmic encounter, and or for an extended (super extended) episode game of thrones, or a munchkins mash up with one or some of the expansions.Orr marvels legendary, or a game of smash up using the chthulu expansions
Oh My God! There’s An Axe In My Head. The Game of International Diplomacy.
Dungeon Roll – dungeon delving, dice based press your luck game that is a quick and fun play. REALLY easy to get used to. (Kids love it) Might be too fast for one full show though; maybe as part of a two-for-one episode?
Another vote for Zombiecide!
Otherwise – Oh Gnome You Don’t! or Trailor Park Wars both by Gut Bustin’ Games
At our house, we love to play the Mayfair crayon rail games like Empire Builder and Eurorails. You’d have to pick one of the games with a smaller map (say, British Rails) in order to get down to 90 minutes of playtime, though.
How about Killer Bunnies?
Mansions of Madness, Arkham Horror, Zombies, When Darkness Comes, Zombicide, Dominion, Talisman, Quarantine, Last Night on Earth…
Space Pirate Amazon Ninja
Coup!
Mice and Mystics!
WizWars and Boss Monster
I’ll echo others, Dead of Winter for sure.
I’d love to see Gravwell.
Rampage would be a fun dexterity game. Cash N Guns, Steam Park and this one might be a stretch but Legendary Encounter (Co-op deck building game based on the Alien franchise, you can add in Alien players and/or hidden agendas)
They played Rampage on the Tabletop day stream, I wouldnt hold my breath for them to play it again.
They said Rampage sadly wouldn’t work because of the need to constantly move around
7 wonders
Coup
Walk the plank
Citadels
Bang!
All excellent games
+1 for Citadels! It would fit Tabletop perfectly.
Pirates, Ninjas, Robots & Zombies
Dwarven Miner or Shadowrun Crossfire.
Libertalia is a good pirate themed game to play. It would give the opportunity for some terrible jokes and impressions 😉
Who What Where!
March of the Ants
I saw you at the Goodman Games booth at Gen Con, checking out Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. Give it a try. You won’t regret it. Joseph lives in Cali, too, and would make a great guest.
Marrying Mr. Darcy!
This is a strategy card game based on Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, wherein players accrue points based on their merits and attempt to win the game by proving they’re the most satisfied with their lot in life. (There is also a zombie expansion pack).
Perhaps another episode of fast-playing “filler” games? For that, I would suggest “Cockroach Poker” by Jacques Zeimet and “Bad Neighbors” (I found via Game Crafter).
Quick, easy to play and compact (both are single deck card games).
Whatever you decide to play, I’m really looking forward to Season 3!
I wish I knew more about the firefly board game. I picked it up but have not played it yet. But let’s save that for when some of the cast is available for filming ☺
Agreed to RoboRally(Wotc), super chaotic fun.
Kingdom Builders(Rio Grande) is a fun game with a lot of variability (victory conditions and map vary each game).
Flash Point(Indie Board and Card) is a great co-op game where you’re trying to save people while a building is on fire and collapsing.
7 Wonders (Asmodee) is one of the classics, but since everyone plays at the same time it might be difficult to capture.
Conquest of Planet Earth(Flying Frog) is a great game where you play aliens trying to take over planet earth, has both coop and competitive variants.
Survive! (also known as Escape From Atlantis) currently owned by Stronghold Games(?) A great, easy to learn family game with the right amount of luck and strategy.
Fortune and Glory would be amazing.
This has already been played, makes a great episode!
Have you done Magic yet? You could play Commander with the pre-con decks.
Day9 has his own Geek and Sundry show playing MTG called Spellslingers, aimed more at beginner players but still makes some great viewing ☺
Rather Dashing Games! You’d enjoy any of the games.
I tend to assume you’ve already thought about playing talisman and dismissed it as being too long, but if you give people a good run down and strategy it could be done in time pretty easily.
I’ve played games that lasted 30 minutes before.
Plus it would look great on camera especially if someone painted the figurines.
Havok and Hijinks!
Quarriors!
In no particular order:
1.) Steam Park by iello games; I got a chance to play this at Gen Con, and it’s got some really neat, unique game mechanics. You’re building a theme park for steam-powered robots. What more is there to say?
2.) Doomtown: Reloaded; wanted to play this at Gen Con, but failed to do so everytime I tried. Hey, it’s set in the Deadlands universe, so it has to be doing something right. 8.19 / 10 on BGG.
3.) Zeppelin Attack!; I supported this game on Kickstarter, but still haven’t got a chance to play it. 8.06 / 10 on BGG, so it’s gotta be at least decent.
4.) King of New York; the follow-up to King of Tokyo, I’ve heard that it’s a rather different game from King of Tokyo. Honestly don’t know if it’s as good, but if I were a betting man, I’d bet that it’s at least worth taking a peek at.
5.) Witcher Adventure Game by Fantasy Flight Games. Not sure if the game will even be completed / finalized by the time Tabletop season 3 goes into production, but it might be worth an inquiry?
5.) Pathfinder Adventure Card Game; it definitely meets your criteria, but I’m not sure it’s a viable candidate. I swear I read somewhere you playtested it, so there may be a conflict of interest there.
6.) My friend Jchon Bahl II developed a game called ‘Dead Apocalypse’. He’s basically a one man company at the moment (Mystery Suit Games,) but his deck building game (which I playtested, so talk about a conflict of interest! :)) is solid, and it’s got some really unique art, in my opinion. On the RPG side of things, while I love 5th edition D&D at the moment, it probably gets a ton of love from Acquisitions Incorporated, so I wouldn’t mind you with an alternative. I’d love to see Savage Worlds / Deadlands Reloaded, something with Fate: Core, the Firefly RPG, or 13th Age, if for the only reason is that I want to know what the 13th Age version of Aeofel Elhromane’s ‘one unique thing’ will be.
Gravwell by Corey Young
Trains (as has been mentioned before)
Space Cadets (Either the original or Dice Duel)
Quantum
If you do another episode with a couple dice games I really enjoy Pass the Pigs
Boss Monster
Winter’s Tale and Ascending Empires would be my top two.
I’d also really like to see another round of Fiasco.
I would love to see you guys play “Kill Doctor Lucky” from Cheapass Games (with a lovely deluxe edition currently available from Paizo). This game is about what happens before “Clue” starts: the players all have their reasons for killing Doctor Lucky, but they need to do it where none of the other guests can see (and, one assumes, testify).
I’d also recommend Red Dragon Inn from Slugfest Games. This game is about a party of adventurers meeting at a tavern after they’ve gone out on their quest — and they’re unwinding with a little drinking, gambling, and the occasional friendly fist-fight. Last player conscious and not broke wins.
+1 to Kill Doctor Lucky
7 wonders – repos productions (use leaders expansion with Wil Wheaton LE card)
RoboRally
Kill Doctor Lucky
Flash Point (Pandemic like)
Trans America – Rio Grande games
Axis of Villains – wonder forge (castle panic style board but justice league themed and different rules)
DC Deck Building game
Dominion
Tobago
1775: Rebellion? Light version of the American Revolution where 4 can play on teams (2 Regulars, 2 Militia on each side)
Check out Grant Wilson’s Rather Dashing Games.
I’d like to see Rather Dashing Games’s by Grant Wilson.
Dwarven Miner from Rather Dashing Games. Or anything from Rather Dashing Games, they all look very interesting.
I have 4 suggestions. The one I would be most excited about is Flash Point: Fire Rescue. But I also recommend Sky Traders, Jamaica, and Steam Park!
Discworld: Ankh-Morpork
Mansion of Maddess and Forbidden Desert. Please and thank you.
Seven Wonders
Firefly (probably doesn’t fit in your criteria, but is a really fun game to play!)
Labyrinth
Boss Monster seems like it would be great. Quantum.
Just because I’m such a massive fan of the game system in general, I’d love to see your take on one of the broader Munchkin expansions… Booty, Zombies, or Pathfinder, perhaps? Including board changes and dice additions, of course.
zombiecide from guilutine games
eldritch horror from Fantasy Flight Games
